  • “Call now; is there anyone who will answer you?
    To which of the holy ones will you turn?
  • Eliphaz’s Response Continues

    “Cry for help, but will anyone answer you?
    Which of the angelsa will help you?
  • Surely vexation kills the fool,
    and jealousy slays the simple.
  • Surely resentment destroys the fool,
    and jealousy kills the simple.
  • I have seen the fool taking root,
    but suddenly I cursed his dwelling.
  • I have seen that fools may be successful for the moment,
    but then comes sudden disaster.
  • His children are far from safety;
    they are crushed in the gate,
    and there is no one to deliver them.
  • Their children are abandoned far from help;
    they are crushed in court with no one to defend them.
  • The hungry eat his harvest,
    and he takes it even out of thorns,a
    and the thirsty pantb after hisc wealth.

  • For affliction does not come from the dust,

    He performs countless miracles.

    and sends waters on the fields;

    and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
  • He gives prosperity to the poor
    and protects those who suffer.
  • He frustrates the devices of the crafty,
    so that their hands achieve no success.
  • He frustrates the plans of schemers
    so the work of their hands will not succeed.
  • He catches the wise in their own craftiness,
    and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.
  • He traps the wise in their own cleverness
    so their cunning schemes are thwarted.
  • They meet with darkness in the daytime
    and grope at noonday as in the night.
  • They find it is dark in the daytime,
    and they grope at noon as if it were night.
  • But he saves the needy from the sword of their mouth
    and from the hand of the mighty.
  • He rescues the poor from the cutting words of the strong,
    and rescues them from the clutches of the powerful.
  • So the poor have hope,
    and injustice shuts her mouth.
  • And so at last the poor have hope,
    and the snapping jaws of the wicked are shut.
  • “Behold, blessed is the one whom God reproves;
    therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty.
  • “But consider the joy of those corrected by God!
    Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin.
  • For he wounds, but he binds up;
    he shatters, but his hands heal.
  • For though he wounds, he also bandages.
    He strikes, but his hands also heal.
  • He will deliver you from six troubles;
    in seven no evild shall touch you.
  • From six disasters he will rescue you;
    even in the seventh, he will keep you from evil.
  • In famine he will redeem you from death,
    and in war from the power of the sword.
  • He will save you from death in time of famine,
    from the power of the sword in time of war.
  • You shall be hidden from the lash of the tongue,
    and shall not fear destruction when it comes.
  • You will be safe from slander
    and have no fear when destruction comes.
  • At destruction and famine you shall laugh,
    and shall not fear the beasts of the earth.
  • You will laugh at destruction and famine;
    wild animals will not terrify you.
  • For you shall be in league with the stones of the field,
    and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you.
  • You will be at peace with the stones of the field,
    and its wild animals will be at peace with you.
  • You shall know that your tent is at peace,
    and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing.
  • You will know that your home is safe.
    When you survey your possessions, nothing will be missing.
  • You shall know also that your offspring shall be many,
    and your descendants as the grass of the earth.
  • You will have many children;
    your descendants will be as plentiful as grass!
  • You shall come to your grave in ripe old age,
    like a sheaf gathered up in its season.
  • You will go to the grave at a ripe old age,
    like a sheaf of grain harvested at the proper time!
  • Behold, this we have searched out; it is true.
    Hear, and know it for your good.”e
  • “We have studied life and found all this to be true.
    Listen to my counsel, and apply it to yourself.”
