Why Should I Fear in Times of Trouble?

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.

Hear this, all peoples!
Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,

both low and high,
rich and poor together!

Hört dies an, ihr Völker alle, vernehmt es, alle Bewohner der Welt,

My mouth shall speak wisdom;
the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

ihr Leute aus dem Volk und vom Adel, Reiche und Arme zusammen!

I will incline my ear to a proverb;
I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.

Mein Mund spreche weise Worte; was mein Herz ersinnt, sei voller Einsicht.

Why should I fear in times of trouble,
when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me,

Ich wende mein Ohr einem Sprichwort zu, ich enthülle mein Rätsel beim Leierspiel.

those who trust in their wealth
and boast of the abundance of their riches?

Warum soll ich mich in bösen Tagen fürchten, wenn mich die Schuld meiner Tritte umgibt?

Truly no man can ransom another,
or give to God the price of his life,

Sie verlassen sich ganz auf ihren Besitz und rühmen sich ihres großen Reichtums.

for the ransom of their life is costly
and can never suffice,

Doch kann keiner einen Bruder auslösen, an Gott für ihn ein Sühnegeld zahlen

that he should live on forever
and never see the pit.

— für ihr Leben ist jeder Kaufpreis zu hoch, für immer muss man davon abstehn — ,

For he sees that even the wise die;
the fool and the stupid alike must perish
and leave their wealth to others.

dass man auf ewig weiterlebt und niemals das Grab schaut.

Their graves are their homes forever,a
their dwelling places to all generations,
though they called lands by their own names.

Denn man sieht: Weise sterben; gemeinsam gehen Tor und Narr zugrunde und lassen andern ihren Reichtum.

Man in his pomp will not remain;
he is like the beasts that perish.

Sie meinen, ihre Häuser bestehen auf ewig, ihre Wohnungen von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht, nannten sie auch Länder nach ihrem Namen.

This is the path of those who have foolish confidence;
yet after them people approve of their boasts.b Selah

Doch der Mensch bleibt nicht in seiner Pracht; er gleicht dem Vieh, das verstummt.

Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol;
death shall be their shepherd,
and the upright shall rule over them in the morning.
Their form shall be consumed in Sheol, with no place to dwell.

So geht es denen, die auf sich selbst vertrauen, und nach ihnen denen, die sich in großen Worten gefallen. [Sela]

But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol,
for he will receive me. Selah

Sie sind in die Unterwelt gesetzt wie Schafe. Es weidet sie der Tod. Es herrschten über sie Redliche am Morgen. Und ihr Fels ist da, um die Unterwelt schwinden zu lassen von seiner Wohnung.

Be not afraid when a man becomes rich,
when the glory of his house increases.

Doch Gott wird mich auslösen aus der Gewalt der Unterwelt, ja, er nimmt mich auf. [Sela]

For when he dies he will carry nothing away;
his glory will not go down after him.

Lass dich nicht beirren, wenn einer reich wird und die Herrlichkeit seines Hauses sich mehrt;

For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed
— and though you get praise when you do well for yourself —

denn im Tod nimmt er das alles nicht mit, seine Herrlichkeit steigt nicht mit ihm hinab.

his soul will go to the generation of his fathers,
who will never again see light.

Preist er sich im Leben auch glücklich: Man lobt dich, weil du es dir wohl sein lässt,

Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

so muss er doch zur Schar seiner Väter hinab, die das Licht nicht mehr erblicken.
