Ihr Völker, kommt her und passt gut auf! Alle Welt soll es hören, ja, die ganze Erde und was auf ihr lebt:
Der HERR ist zornig über alle Völker, ihre Heere werden seinen schrecklichen Zorn zu spüren bekommen. Er hat sie dem Untergang geweiht, abgeschlachtet sollen sie werden.
Their slain shall be cast out,
and the stench of their corpses shall rise;
the mountains shall flow with their blood.

Dann liegen die Leichen herum, und niemand beerdigt sie. Widerlicher Verwesungsgestank erfüllt die Luft. Das Blut der Erschlagenen durchtränkt die Berge.

Das Schwert des HERRN trieft von ihrem Blut und Fett, so wie es beim Schlachten vom Blut der Lämmer und Böcke trieft, wie es bedeckt ist vom Nierenfett der Schafböcke. Denn in Bozra, der Hauptstadt von Edom, feiert der HERR ein Opferfest. Ja, in ganz Edom ist großer Schlachttag.

Die Menschen werden niedergemetzelt wie Büffel, Rinder und Stiere. Ihr Blut durchtränkt das ganze Land, der Boden trieft von ihrem Fett.

Das alles wird geschehen, wenn der HERR mit seinen Feinden abrechnet. In diesem Jahr zahlt er ihnen alles Unrecht heim, das sie an Zion verübt haben.
Dann wird das Wasser der Bäche in Edom zu Pech, und der Boden verwandelt sich in Schwefel. Das ganze Land steht in Flammen wie eine Fackel,

Tag und Nacht erlischt das Feuer nicht. Unaufhörlich steigt schwarzer Rauch zum Himmel auf. Generationen kommen und gehen, doch dieses Land bleibt verwüstet für alle Zeiten. Nie mehr wird ein Mensch diese öde Gegend durchstreifen.
Eulen und Igel hausen dort, Käuzchen und Raben lassen sich nieder. Gott nimmt genau Maß, um das Land zu verwüsten. Er steckt die Grenzen ab, um es für immer unbewohnbar zu machen.

Keine Fürsten rufen je wieder ein Königtum aus, von den vornehmen Herren bleibt niemand übrig.
An den Mauern der Paläste ranken Dornen empor, Nesseln und Disteln überwuchern die alten Festungen. Schakale wohnen in den Ruinen, und Strauße siedeln sich an.

Schlangen nisten dort, legen Eier und brüten sie aus, bis die Jungen schlüpfen. Auch Aasgeier zieht es in großer Zahl dorthin.

Forscht im Buch des HERRN und lest nach: Nicht eines dieser Wesen fehlt, alle finden sich in Edom. Denn der Herr selbst hat es befohlen, und sein Geist bringt sie dort zusammen.

Eigenhändig wird er das Land vermessen und jedem Tier durch das Los sein Gebiet zuweisen. Dann besitzen sie es für alle Zeiten, eine Generation nach der anderen wird darin wohnen.
