Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord?

Bin ich nicht frei? Bin ich nicht ein Apostel? Habe ich nicht Jesus, unseren Herrn, gesehen? Seid ihr nicht mein Werk im Herrn?
If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
Wenn ich für andere kein Apostel bin, bin ich es doch für euch. Ihr seid ja im Herrn das Siegel meines Apostelamtes.
This is my defense to those who would examine me.
Das aber ist meine Rechtfertigung vor denen, die abfällig über mich urteilen:
Haben wir nicht das Recht, eine Schwester im Glauben als Frau mitzunehmen, wie die übrigen Apostel und die Brüder des Herrn und wie Kephas?
Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living?
Haben nur ich und Barnabas kein Recht, nicht zu arbeiten?
Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?
Wer leistet denn Kriegsdienst und bezahlt sich selber den Sold? Wer pflanzt einen Weinberg und isst nicht von seinem Ertrag? Oder wer weidet eine Herde und trinkt nicht von der Milch der Herde?
Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same?
Sage ich das nur als Mensch? Sagt das nicht auch das Gesetz?
For it is written in the Law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain.” Is it for oxen that God is concerned?
Im Gesetz des Mose steht doch: Du sollst dem Ochsen beim Dreschen keinen Maulkorb anlegen. Liegt denn Gott etwas an den Ochsen?
Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop.
Spricht er nicht allenthalben unseretwegen? Ja, unseretwegen wurde geschrieben: Der Pflüger wie der Drescher sollen ihre Arbeit in der Erwartung tun, ihren Teil zu erhalten.
If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you?
Wenn wir für euch die Geistesgaben gesät haben, ist es dann zu viel verlangt, wenn wir von euch die irdischen Gaben ernten?
If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more?
Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

Wenn andere an dem, was euch gehört, teilhaben dürfen, dann nicht wir erst recht? Aber wir haben von diesem Recht keinen Gebrauch gemacht. Vielmehr ertragen wir alles, um dem Evangelium Christi kein Hindernis in den Weg zu legen.
Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings?
Wisst ihr nicht, dass alle, die im Heiligtum Dienst tun, vom Heiligtum leben und dass alle, die am Altar Dienst tun, vom Altar ihren Anteil erhalten?
In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.
So hat auch der Herr denen, die das Evangelium verkünden, geboten, vom Evangelium zu leben.
But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting.
Ich aber habe all das nicht in Anspruch genommen. Ich schreibe dies auch nicht, damit es in meinem Fall so geschieht. Lieber wollte ich sterben, als dass mir jemand diesen Ruhm entreißt.
For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!
Wenn ich nämlich das Evangelium verkünde, gebührt mir deswegen kein Ruhm; denn ein Zwang liegt auf mir. Weh mir, wenn ich das Evangelium nicht verkünde!
For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship.
Wäre es mein freier Entschluss, so erhielte ich Lohn. Wenn es mir aber nicht freisteht, so ist es ein Dienst, der mir anvertraut wurde.
What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
Was ist nun mein Lohn? Dass ich unentgeltlich verkünde und so das Evangelium bringe und keinen Gebrauch von meinem Anrecht aus dem Evangelium mache.
For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.
Obwohl ich also von niemandem abhängig bin, habe ich mich für alle zum Sklaven gemacht, um möglichst viele zu gewinnen.
To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law.
Den Juden bin ich ein Jude geworden, um Juden zu gewinnen; denen, die unter dem Gesetz stehen, bin ich, obgleich ich nicht unter dem Gesetz stehe, einer unter dem Gesetz geworden, um die zu gewinnen, die unter dem Gesetz stehen.
To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law.
Den Gesetzlosen bin ich sozusagen ein Gesetzloser geworden — nicht als ein Gesetzloser vor Gott, sondern gebunden an das Gesetz Christi — , um die Gesetzlosen zu gewinnen.
To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
Den Schwachen bin ich ein Schwacher geworden, um die Schwachen zu gewinnen. Allen bin ich alles geworden, um auf jeden Fall einige zu retten.
I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.
Wisst ihr nicht, dass die Läufer im Stadion zwar alle laufen, aber dass nur einer den Siegespreis gewinnt? Lauft so, dass ihr ihn gewinnt!
Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
