Jacob's Fear of Esau

Früh am nächsten Morgen küsste Laban seine Töchter und seine Enkel zum Abschied und segnete sie. Dann kehrte er wieder nach Hause zurück.
And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
Auch Jakob setzte seine Reise fort. Unterwegs begegnete ihm eine Schar von Engeln.
And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
Als er sie sah, rief Jakob erstaunt: »Hier ist das Lager Gottes!« Darum nannte er den Ort Mahanajim (»zwei Lager«).
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
Jakob schickte Boten zu seinem Bruder Esau, der in Edom im Land Seïr wohnte.
And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
Sie sollten Esau diese Nachricht überbringen: »Ich, Jakob, dein Diener, bin bis jetzt bei Laban gewesen.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
Dort habe ich mir viele Rinder, Esel, Schafe und Ziegen sowie Diener und Mägde erworben. Jetzt sende ich dir, meinem Herrn, diese Nachricht und hoffe, dass du uns großzügig aufnimmst!«
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
Die Boten kamen zurück und meldeten: »Esau ist schon auf dem Weg zu dir! 400 Mann begleiten ihn!«
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
Da bekam Jakob furchtbare Angst. Schnell teilte er seine Leute und das Vieh in zwei Gruppen ein,
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
weil er sich dachte: »Wenn Esau eine Gruppe angreift und alles niedermacht, können wenigstens die anderen entkommen!«
I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
Dann betete er: »HERR, du Gott meines Großvaters Abraham und meines Vaters Isaak, du hast zu mir gesagt: ›Kehr zurück in deine Heimat zu deinen Verwandten, ich werde dafür sorgen, dass es dir gut geht!‹
Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
Ich habe es nicht verdient, dass du so viel für mich getan und immer wieder deine Versprechen eingehalten hast! Als ich damals den Jordan überquerte, besaß ich nur einen Wanderstock — und nun komme ich mit zwei großen Gruppen von Menschen und Tieren hier an!
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
Bitte rette mich vor meinem Bruder Esau! Ich habe große Angst, dass er uns alle umbringt, die Frauen und auch die Kinder!
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
Du hast mir doch versprochen: ›Ich will dafür sorgen, dass es dir gut geht, und dir viele Nachkommen schenken, unzählbar wie der Sand am Meer!‹«
Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
Über Nacht blieb Jakob noch im Lager. Er wählte einige Tiere aus, um sie als Geschenk für Esau vorauszuschicken:
Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
200 Ziegen, 20 Ziegenböcke, 200 Schafe, 20 Schafböcke,
And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
30 säugende Kamele mit ihren Jungen, 40 Kühe, 10 Stiere, 20 Eselinnen und 10 Esel.
And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
Er stellte sie in Herden zusammen und übergab jedem seiner Knechte eine. Sie sollten vorausziehen und zwischen den einzelnen Herden Abstand lassen.
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Dem, der die erste anführte, befahl er: »Wenn du Esau begegnest und er dich fragt: ›Wer ist dein Herr? Wohin willst du? Wem gehört das Vieh, das du vor dir hertreibst?‹,
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
dann antworte: ›Es gehört deinem Diener Jakob. Er hat es als Geschenk vorausgeschickt für dich, Esau, seinen Herrn; er selbst kommt auch schon hinter uns her!‹«
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
Dasselbe sagte Jakob zu allen Übrigen, die eine Herde anführten. Er schärfte ihnen ein: »Haltet euch an das, was ihr Esau antworten sollt.
So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
Sagt ihm: ›Jakob, dein Diener, kommt auch gleich!‹« Jakob dachte nämlich: »Ich will ihn milde stimmen mit dem Geschenk, das ich vorausschicke, erst dann will ich ihn selbst sehen. Vielleicht nimmt er mich freundlich auf!«
Jacob Wrestles with God
And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

Er schickte also die Viehherden schon voraus, blieb aber selbst über Nacht im Lager.
And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
Mitten in der Nacht stand Jakob auf und überquerte den Fluss Jabbok an einer seichten Stelle, zusammen mit seinen beiden Frauen, den beiden Mägden und den elf Kindern.
And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
Auch seinen Besitz brachte er auf die andere Seite.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
Nur er blieb noch allein zurück. Plötzlich stellte sich ihm ein Mann entgegen und kämpfte mit ihm bis zum Morgengrauen.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
Als der Mann merkte, dass er Jakob nicht besiegen konnte, gab er ihm einen so harten Schlag auf das Hüftgelenk, dass es ausgerenkt wurde.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
Dann bat er: »Lass mich los, der Morgen dämmert schon!« Aber Jakob erwiderte: »Ich lasse dich nicht eher los, bis du mich gesegnet hast!«
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
»Wie heißt du?«, fragte der Mann. Als Jakob seinen Namen nannte,
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
sagte der Mann: »Von jetzt an sollst du nicht mehr Jakob heißen. Du hast schon mit Gott und mit Menschen gekämpft und immer gesiegt. Darum heißt du von jetzt an Israel (›Gotteskämpfer‹).«
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
»Wie ist denn dein Name?«, fragte Jakob zurück. »Warum willst du das wissen?«, entgegnete der Mann nur, dann segnete er ihn.
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
»Ich habe Gott von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen, und trotzdem lebe ich noch!«, rief Jakob. Darum nannte er den Ort Pnuël (»Gesicht Gottes«).
