Joseph's Dreams
And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

Jakob ließ sich in dem Land nieder, in dem sich sein Vater als Fremder aufgehalten hatte, in Kanaan.
These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
Das ist die Geschlechterfolge Jakobs: Als Josef siebzehn Jahre zählte, weidete er mit seinen Brüdern die Schafe und Ziegen. Er war Hirtenjunge bei den Söhnen Bilhas und Silpas, den Frauen seines Vaters. Josef hinterbrachte ihrem Vater ihre üble Nachrede.
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
Israel liebte Josef mehr als alle seine Söhne, weil er ihm in hohem Alter geboren worden war. Er ließ ihm einen bunten Rock machen.
And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
Als seine Brüder sahen, dass ihr Vater ihn mehr liebte als alle seine Brüder, hassten sie ihn und konnten mit ihm kein friedliches Wort mehr reden.
And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.
Einst hatte Josef einen Traum. Als er ihn seinen Brüdern erzählte, hassten sie ihn noch mehr.
And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
Er sagte zu ihnen: Hört euch doch diesen Traum an, den ich geträumt habe.
For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
Siehe, wir banden Garben mitten auf dem Feld. Und siehe, meine Garbe richtete sich auf und blieb auch stehen. Siehe, eure Garben umringten sie und warfen sich vor meiner Garbe nieder.
And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
Da sagten seine Brüder zu ihm: Willst du etwa König über uns werden oder über uns herrschen? Und sie hassten ihn noch mehr wegen seiner Träume und seiner Worte.
And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
Er hatte noch einen anderen Traum. Er erzählte ihn seinen Brüdern und sagte: Siehe, ich träumte noch einmal: Und siehe, die Sonne, der Mond und elf Sterne warfen sich vor mir nieder.
And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
Als er davon seinem Vater und seinen Brüdern erzählte, schalt ihn sein Vater und sagte zu ihm: Was soll der Traum, den du da geträumt hast? Sollen wir etwa, ich, deine Mutter und deine Brüder, kommen und uns vor dir zur Erde niederwerfen?
And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
Seine Brüder waren eifersüchtig auf ihn, sein Vater aber bewahrte die Sache.
Joseph Sold by his Brothers
And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.

Als seine Brüder fortgezogen waren, um die Schafe und Ziegen ihres Vaters bei Sichem zu weiden,
And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
sagte Israel zu Josef: Weiden nicht deine Brüder bei Sichem? Geh, ich will dich zu ihnen schicken. Er antwortete: Hier bin ich.
And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
Da sagte der Vater zu ihm: Geh doch hin und sieh, wie es deinen Brüdern und den Schafen und Ziegen geht, und berichte mir! So schickte er ihn aus dem Tal von Hebron fort und Josef kam nach Sichem.
And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?
Ein Mann traf ihn und siehe, Josef irrte auf dem Feld umher; der Mann fragte ihn: Was suchst du?
And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.
Josef antwortete: Meine Brüder suche ich. Sag mir doch, wo sie das Vieh weiden!
And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
Der Mann antwortete: Sie sind von hier weitergezogen. Ich habe nämlich gehört, wie sie sagten: Gehen wir nach Dotan. Da ging Josef seinen Brüdern nach und fand sie in Dotan.
And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
Sie sahen ihn von Weitem. Bevor er jedoch nahe an sie herangekommen war, fassten sie den Plan, ihn umzubringen.
And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
Sie sagten zueinander: Siehe, da kommt ja dieser Träumer.
Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
Jetzt aber auf, erschlagen wir ihn und werfen wir ihn in eine der Zisternen. Sagen wir, ein wildes Tier habe ihn gefressen. Dann werden wir ja sehen, was aus seinen Träumen wird.
And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
Ruben hörte das und wollte ihn aus ihrer Hand retten. Er sagte: Begehen wir doch keinen Mord.
And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
Und Ruben sagte zu ihnen: Vergießt kein Blut! Werft ihn in die Zisterne da in der Steppe, aber legt nicht Hand an ihn! Das sagte er, um ihn aus ihrer Hand zu retten und zu seinem Vater zurückzubringen.
And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;
Als Josef bei seinen Brüdern angekommen war, zogen sie ihm seinen bunten Rock aus, den Ärmelrock, den er anhatte,
And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
packten ihn und warfen ihn in die Zisterne. Die Zisterne war leer; es war kein Wasser darin.
And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
Sie saßen beim Essen und erhoben ihre Augen und sahen, siehe, eine Karawane von Ismaelitern aus Gilead kam. Ihre Kamele waren mit Tragakant, Mastix und Ladanum beladen. Sie waren unterwegs nach Ägypten.
And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
Da sagte Juda seinen Brüdern: Was haben wir davon, wenn wir unseren Bruder erschlagen und sein Blut zu- decken?
Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
Kommt, verkaufen wir ihn den Ismaelitern. Wir wollen aber nicht Hand an ihn legen, denn er ist doch unser Bruder und unser Fleisch. Seine Brüder hörten auf ihn.
Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
Midianitische Kaufleute kamen vorbei. Da zogen sie Josef aus der Zisterne herauf und verkauften ihn für zwanzig Silberstücke an die Ismaeliter. Sie brachten Josef nach Ägypten.
And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
Ruben kam zur Zisterne zurück und siehe, Josef war nicht mehr dort. Er zerriss seine Kleider,
And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?
kehrte zu seinen Brüdern zurück und sagte: Der Kleine ist ja nicht mehr da. Und ich, wohin soll ich nun gehen?
Jacob Mourns Joseph
And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

Da nahmen sie Josefs Gewand, schlachteten einen Ziegenbock und tauchten das Gewand in das Blut.
And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no.
Dann schickten sie den bunten Rock zu ihrem Vater und ließen ihm sagen: Das haben wir gefunden. Sieh doch genau nach, ob das der Rock deines Sohnes ist oder nicht!
And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
Als er ihn genau angesehen hatte, sagte er: Der Rock meines Sohnes! Ein wildes Tier hat ihn gefressen. Zerfetzt ist Josef, zerfetzt.
And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
Jakob zerriss seine Kleider, legte ein Trauergewand an und trauerte um seinen Sohn viele Tage.
And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
Alle seine Söhne und Töchter machten sich auf, um ihn zu trösten. Er aber ließ sich nicht trösten und sagte: Ich will voller Trauer zu meinem Sohn in die Unterwelt hinabsteigen. So beweinte ihn sein Vater.
