Zum Ekel ist mein Leben mir geworden, ich lasse meiner Klage freien Lauf, reden will ich in meiner Seele Bitternis.
I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.
Ich sage zu Gott: Sprich mich nicht schuldig, lass mich wissen, warum du mich befehdest!
Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?
Was hast du davon, dass du Gewalt verübst, dass du die Mühsal deiner Hände verwirfst, doch über dem Plan der Frevler aufstrahlst?
Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man seeth?
Hast du die Augen eines Sterblichen, siehst du, wie Menschen sehen?
Are thy days as the days of man? are thy years as man's days,
Sind Menschentagen deine Tage gleich und deine Jahre wie des Mannes Tage,
That thou inquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?
dass du Schuld an mir suchst, nach meiner Sünde fahndest,
Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.
obwohl du weißt, dass ich nicht schuldig bin und dass keiner retten kann aus deiner Hand?
Thine hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.
Deine Hände haben mich gebildet, mich gemacht; dann hast du dich umgedreht und mich vernichtet.
Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again?
Denk doch daran, wie Ton hast du mich gemacht und zu Staub lässt du mich zurückkehren.
Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?
Hast du mich nicht ausgegossen wie Milch, wie Käse mich gerinnen lassen?
Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and hast fenced me with bones and sinews.
Mit Haut und Fleisch hast du mich umkleidet, mit Knochen und Sehnen mich durchflochten.
Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.
Leben und Huld hast du mir verliehen, deine Obhut schützte meinen Geist.
And these things hast thou hid in thine heart: I know that this is with thee.
Doch verbirgst du dies in deinem Herzen; ich weiß, das hattest du im Sinn.
If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.
Sündige ich, wirst du mich bewachen, mich nicht freisprechen von meiner Schuld.
If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see thou mine affliction;
Wenn ich schuldig würde, dann wehe mir! Aber selbst wenn ich im Recht wäre, dürfte ich mein Haupt nicht erheben, bin gesättigt mit Schmach und geplagt mit Kummer.
For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvellous upon me.
Erhebe ich es doch, jagst du mich wie ein Löwe und erweist dich wieder wunderbar an mir.
Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.
Neue Zeugen bietest du gegen mich auf, häufst deinen Unwillen auf mich, immer neue Heere führst du mir entgegen.
Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me!
Warum ließest du mich aus dem Mutterschoß kommen, warum verschied ich nicht, ehe mich ein Auge sah?
I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave.
Wie nie gewesen wäre ich dann, vom Mutterleib zum Grab getragen.
Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,
Sind wenig nicht die Tage meines Lebens? Lass ab von mir, damit ich ein wenig heiter blicken kann,
Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
bevor ich fortgehe ohne Wiederkehr ins Land der Finsternis und des Todesschattens,
