»Wie vergänglich ist der Mensch! Wie kurz sind seine Jahre! Wie mühsam ist sein Leben!
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Er blüht auf wie eine Blume — und verwelkt; er verschwindet wie ein Schatten — und fort ist er!
And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
Und doch verlierst du ihn nicht aus den Augen und stellst ihn vor dein Gericht!
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
Du musst doch wissen, dass aus Unreinheit nichts Reines entsteht. Wie sollte da ein Mensch vollkommen sein? Alle sind mit Schuld beladen!
Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
Die Jahre eines jeden Menschen sind gezählt; die Dauer seines Lebens hast du festgelegt. Du hast ihm eine Grenze gesetzt, die er nicht überschreiten kann.
Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
So schau jetzt weg von ihm, damit er Ruhe hat und seines Lebens noch froh wird, wie ein Arbeiter am Feierabend!
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
Für einen Baum gibt es immer noch Hoffnung, selbst wenn man ihn gefällt hat; aus dem Stumpf wachsen wieder frische Triebe nach.
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
Auch wenn seine Wurzeln im Erdreich absterben und der Stumpf langsam im Boden vertrocknet,
Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
erwacht er doch zu neuem Leben, sobald er Wasser bekommt. Neue Triebe schießen empor wie bei einer jungen Pflanze.
But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
Aber wenn ein Mensch gestorben ist, dann ist er dahin. Er hat sein Leben ausgehaucht. Wo ist er nun?
As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
Wie Wasser, das aus einem See ausläuft, und wie ein Flussbett, das vertrocknet,
So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
so ist der Mensch, wenn er stirbt: Er legt sich nieder und steht nie wieder auf. Ja, die Toten werden niemals erwachen, solange der Himmel besteht! Nie wieder werden sie aus ihrem Schlaf erweckt!
O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
O Gott, versteck mich doch bei den Toten! Schließ mich für eine Weile dort ein, bis dein Zorn verflogen ist! Aber setz dir eine Frist und denk dann wieder an mich! —
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
Meinst du, ein Mensch wird wieder lebendig, wenn er gestorben ist? — Dann könnte ich trotz meiner Qualen auf bessere Zeiten hoffen wie ein Zwangsarbeiter, der die Tage bis zu seiner Entlassung zählt.
Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
Denn dann wirst du mich rufen, und ich werde dir antworten. Du wirst dich nach mir sehnen, weil du selbst mich geschaffen hast.
For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
Meine Wege siehst du auch dann noch, aber meine Sünden hältst du mir nicht mehr vor.
My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
Was immer ich begangen habe, verschließt du wie in einem Beutel, meine Schuld löschst du für immer aus.
And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
Doch selbst Berge stürzen und zerfallen, Felsen rutschen zu Tal.
The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
Wasser zermahlt die Steine zu Sand, und Sturzbäche reißen den Erdboden fort. Genauso zerstörst du jede Hoffnung des Menschen.
Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
Du überwältigst ihn, zwingst ihn zu Boden; mit entstelltem Gesicht liegt er da und stirbt. Du schickst ihn fort — er kommt nie wieder.
His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
Ob seine Kinder einst berühmt sind oder ob man sie verachtet, er weiß nichts davon. Ihre Zukunft bleibt ihm völlig verborgen.
