Eliphaz: the Innocent Prosper
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

Elifas aus Teman versuchte als Erster, Hiob eine Antwort zu geben.
If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?
»Du bist zwar aufgebracht«, sagte er, »doch will ich versuchen, dir etwas zu sagen; ich kann nicht länger schweigen!
Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
Du selbst hast zahllose Menschen gelehrt, auf Gott zu vertrauen. Kraftlose Hände hast du wieder gestärkt.
Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
War jemand mutlos und ohne Halt, du hast ihn wieder aufgerichtet und ihm neuen Lebensmut gegeben.
But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
Jetzt aber, wo du selbst an der Reihe bist, verlierst du die Fassung. Kaum bricht das Unglück über dich herein, bist du entsetzt!
Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
Dabei hast du allen Grund zur Hoffnung! Dein Leben war stets tadellos, und Gott hast du von Herzen geehrt. Sei zuversichtlich!
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
Kannst du mir nur ein Beispiel nennen, wo ein gerechter Mensch schuldlos zugrunde ging?
Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
Im Gegenteil — immer wieder habe ich gesehen: Wer Unrecht sät, wird Unglück ernten!
By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
Denn Gott fegt Übeltäter mit seinem Atem hinweg, mit zornigem Schnauben richtet er sie zugrunde.
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
Wenn sie auch wie die Löwen brüllen, bringt Gott sie doch zum Schweigen und bricht ihnen die Zähne aus.
The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.
Sie verenden wie Löwen, die keine Beute mehr finden, und ihre Kinder werden in alle Winde zerstreut.
Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
Hiob, heimlich habe ich eine Botschaft bekommen, leise wurde sie mir zugeflüstert!
In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
Es geschah in jener Zeit der Nacht, wenn man sich unruhig im Traum hin- und herwälzt, wenn tiefer Schlaf die Menschen überfällt:
Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.
Da packten mich Grauen und Entsetzen; ich zitterte am ganzen Leib.
Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
Ein Windhauch wehte dicht an mir vorüber — die Haare standen mir zu Berge!
It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
Dann sah ich jemanden neben mir, aber ich konnte ihn nicht erkennen, nur ein Schatten war zu sehen; er flüsterte:
Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
›Kann denn ein Mensch gerecht sein vor Gott, vollkommen vor seinem Schöpfer?‹
Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
Selbst seinen Dienern im Himmel vertraut Gott nicht, und an seinen Engeln findet er Fehler.
How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?
Wie viel weniger vertraut er dann den Menschen! Sie hausen in Lehmhütten, die im Staub auf der Erde stehen, und werden wie eine Motte zertreten.
They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
Mitten aus dem Leben werden sie gerissen, unwiederbringlich, und keiner beachtet es!
