Job Continues: Life Seems Futile
Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an hireling?

As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work:
Wie ein Knecht ist er, der nach Schatten lechzt, wie ein Tagelöhner, der auf seinen Lohn wartet.
So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me.
So wurden Monde voll Enttäuschung mein Erbe und Nächte voller Mühsal teilte man mir zu.
When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day.
Lege ich mich nieder, sage ich: Wann darf ich aufstehn? Wird es Abend, bin ich gesättigt mit Unrast, bis es dämmert.
My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome.
Mein Leib ist gekleidet in Maden und Schorf, meine Haut schrumpft und eitert.
My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.
Schneller als das Weberschiffchen eilen meine Tage, sie gehen zu Ende, ohne Hoffnung.
O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.
Denk daran, dass mein Leben nur ein Hauch ist! Nie mehr schaut mein Auge Glück.
The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.
Kein Auge gewahrt mich, das nach mir sieht, suchen mich deine Augen, dann bin ich nicht mehr da.
As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
Wie die Wolke, die entschwand und dahinzog, so steigt nie mehr auf, wer zur Unterwelt hinabstieg.
He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.
Nie mehr kehrt er zurück in sein Haus, nie mehr erblickt ihn sein Ort.
Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
So will auch ich meinen Mund nicht zügeln, mit bedrängtem Geist will ich reden, mit betrübter Seele will ich klagen.
Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch over me?
Bin ich das Meer, der Meeresdrache, dass du gegen mich eine Wache stellst?
When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint;
Sagte ich: Mein Lager soll mich trösten, mein Bett trage das Leid mit mir!,
Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions:
so quältest du mich mit Träumen und mit Gesichten jagtest du mich in Angst.
So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life.
Erwürgt zu werden, zöge ich vor, den Tod meinem Totengerippe.
I loathe it; I would not live alway: let me alone; for my days are vanity.
Ich mag nicht mehr, ich will nicht ewig leben. Lass ab von mir, denn nur ein Hauch sind meine Tage!
What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him?
Was ist der Mensch, dass du groß ihn achtest und deinen Sinn auf ihn richtest,
And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him every moment?
dass du ihn musterst jeden Morgen und jeden Augenblick ihn prüfst?
How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?
Wie lange schon schaust du nicht weg von mir, lässt mich nicht los, sodass ich meinen Speichel schlucke?
I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
Habe ich gefehlt? Was tat ich dir, du Menschenwächter? Warum hast du mich zu deiner Zielscheibe gemacht, sodass ich mir selbst zu einer Last geworden bin?
And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.
Warum nimmst du mein Vergehen nicht weg, lässt du meine Schuld nicht nach? Nun denn — zum Staub bette ich mich, und suchst du mich, dann bin ich nicht mehr da.
