Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
Hört zu, all ihr Völker! Horcht auf, ihr Bewohner der Erde!
My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
Ob ihr einfache oder vornehme Leute seid, ob arm oder reich —
I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
ich habe euch Wichtiges zu sagen! Meine Worte sind die Worte eines Weisen, und tiefe Einsicht spricht aus ihnen.
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
Denn ich höre genau zu, wenn Gott mir Sprüche der Weisheit vermittelt, beim Spiel auf der Laute will ich euch nun ihre Bedeutung erklären.
They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
Warum sollte ich mich fürchten, wenn ein Unglück naht, wenn ich umgeben bin von boshaften und hinterhältigen Menschen?
None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
Sie verlassen sich auf ihren Reichtum, mit Geld und Luxus protzen sie.
(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
Doch niemand kann für das Leben seines Freundes bezahlen, niemand kann ihn bei Gott vom Tod freikaufen.
That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
Denn ein Menschenleben kann man nicht mit Gold aufwiegen — aller Reichtum dieser Welt wäre noch zu wenig!
For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
Keiner lebt hier ewig, niemand kann dem Grab entrinnen.
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
Jeder kann es sehen: Auch die klügsten Menschen werden vom Tod ereilt, genauso wie Tagträumer und Dummköpfe. Ihren Besitz müssen sie zurücklassen — für andere!
Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
Sie bilden sich ein, dass ihre Häuser für die Ewigkeit gebaut sind und alle Generationen überdauern. Aber es hilft ihnen nichts, selbst wenn sie ganze Länder besessen haben.
This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
Reichtum und Ansehen erhalten keinen Menschen am Leben; er verendet wie das Vieh.
Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
Dieses Schicksal trifft alle, die auf sich selbst vertrauen und sich in ihrem überheblichen Gerede gefallen:
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
Ahnungslos wie Schafe trotten sie in die Totenwelt; ihr Hirte dort ist niemand anderes als der Tod. Ihr Körper verwest im Grab, und ihre vornehmen Häuser zerfallen. Dann bricht ein neuer Morgen an — der Tag, an dem die aufrichtigen Menschen über sie triumphieren.
Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
Ich bin gewiss: Gott wird mich erlösen, er wird mich den Klauen des Todes entreißen.
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
Lass dich nicht einschüchtern, wenn einer steinreich wird und sein Haus immer prachtvoller ausstattet!
Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
Nichts kann er davon mitnehmen, wenn er stirbt; was er angehäuft hat, folgt ihm nicht ins Grab.
He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
Er preist sich selbst: »Ich bin meines Glückes Schmied!«, und man schmeichelt ihm, weil er so erfolgreich ist.
