Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

Ihr Israeliten, hört die Totenklage, die ich über euch anstimme:
The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
»Gefallen ist mein Volk Israel, es gleicht einer jungen Frau, die gestürzt ist und der niemand aufhilft. Leblos liegt sie am Boden, nie mehr wird sie sich erheben.«
For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.
Denn so spricht Gott, der HERR: »Wenn aus einer eurer Städte tausend Männer in den Krieg ziehen, kehren nur hundert zurück, und wenn hundert in den Kampf gehen, bleiben nur zehn davon übrig!
A Call to Repentance
For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

Ich, der HERR, fordere euch Israeliten auf: Kommt zu mir zurück, dann bleibt ihr am Leben!
But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.
Reist nicht mehr nach Beerscheba, um dort zu opfern, besucht auch nicht mehr die Heiligtümer in Gilgal und Bethel. Denn die Einwohner von Gilgal werden in die Gefangenschaft geführt, und Bethel wird zum Unglücksort.«
Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.
Ja, kehrt zum HERRN zurück, dann werdet ihr leben! Sonst bekommt ihr Nachkommen von Josef seinen Zorn zu spüren. Er wütet wie ein loderndes Feuer, das sich immer weiter ausbreitet, und wenn es Bethel erreicht hat, kann niemand es dort löschen.
Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,
Ihr treibt mit der Gerechtigkeit Schindluder, ihr tretet das Recht mit Füßen!
Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
Gott hat das Siebengestirn und den Orion geschaffen. Nach der Nacht lässt er einen neuen Tag anbrechen, und Licht verwandelt er wieder in Finsternis. Er ruft das Wasser aus dem Meer, und schon ergießt es sich auf die Erde. Sein Name ist »der HERR«!
That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.
Blitzschnell vernichtet er die Mächtigen und macht ihre Festungen dem Erdboden gleich.
They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.
Gott sagt: »Ihr hasst jeden, der vor Gericht für das Recht eintritt, und wer die Wahrheit sagt, den verabscheut ihr.
Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.
Von den Ärmsten nehmt ihr Pachtgeld und verlangt auch noch Getreideabgaben. Darum macht euch auf die Strafe gefasst: Ihr habt euch zwar prachtvolle Häuser aus behauenen Steinen gebaut, doch ihr werdet nicht darin wohnen! Ihr habt euch herrliche Weingärten angelegt, doch ihr werdet keinen Wein daraus trinken!
For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.
Ja, ich weiß, wie viele Verbrechen ihr begangen habt und wie groß eure Schuld ist. Ehrliche Menschen bringt ihr in Bedrängnis, ihr nehmt Bestechungsgelder an und lasst die Armen vor Gericht nicht zu ihrem Recht kommen.
Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.
Wer klug ist, der schweigt in dieser schlimmen Zeit.«
Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
Setzt euch für das Gute ein, allem Bösen aber kehrt den Rücken! Dann werdet ihr leben, und der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, steht euch bei, so wie ihr es ja immer behauptet.
Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.
Ja, hasst das Böse, liebt das Gute! Verhelft vor Gericht jedem zu seinem Recht! Vielleicht erbarmt sich der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, doch noch über euch, die ihr von Josefs Nachkommen übrig geblieben seid.
The Coming Judgment
Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

So spricht der HERR über alles, der allmächtige Gott: »Auf allen Plätzen und Straßen wird man lautes Klagen und Jammergeschrei hören. Sogar die Bauern holt man vom Feld, damit sie ebenso wie die Klageweiber die Toten beweinen.
And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD.
In den Weinbergen wird dann Trauer statt Freude herrschen. Denn ich, der HERR, werde durchs Land schreiten und euch zur Rechenschaft ziehen. Mein Wort gilt!«
Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.
Wehe euch, die ihr euch wünscht: »Wenn nur der Tag schon da wäre, an dem der HERR eingreift!« Glaubt ihr eigentlich, dass dieser Tag euch Licht bringen wird? Nein, in tiefste Dunkelheit werdet ihr gestoßen!
As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.
Es ergeht euch wie einem Mann, der vor dem Löwen flieht und dabei einem Bären in den Weg läuft. Selbst wenn er da noch mit heiler Haut davonkommt und sich zu Hause erschöpft an die Wand stützt — dann beißt ihn dort eine Schlange in die Hand!
Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?
Ja, der Gerichtstag des HERRN bringt euch kein Licht, sondern Dunkelheit, schwarz wie die Nacht wird er sein!
I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.
Gott sagt: »Ich hasse eure Feiern, geradezu widerwärtig sind sie mir, eure Opferfeste verabscheue ich.
Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.
Eure Brand- und Speiseopfer nehme ich nicht an, und wenn ihr Tiere mästet, um sie mir darzubringen, ist mir das völlig gleichgültig.
Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.
Eure lauten Lieder kann ich nicht mehr hören, verschont mich mit eurem Harfengeklimper.
But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
Setzt euch lieber für die Gerechtigkeit ein! Das Recht soll das Land durchströmen wie ein nie versiegender Fluss.
Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
Ihr Israeliten, als ihr vierzig Jahre in der Wüste umhergezogen seid, habt ihr mir da Schlachtopfer und Speiseopfer dargebracht?
But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
Habt ihr nicht schon damals die Figuren eures Himmelskönigs Sakkut und eures Sternengottes Kewan herumgetragen, die ihr euch selbst gemacht habt?
