Die Liebe soll also euer höchstes Ziel sein. Strebt aber auch nach den Gaben, die der Geist Gottes gibt; vor allem danach, in Gottes Auftrag prophetisch zu reden.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Wenn nämlich jemand in unbekannten Sprachen redet, dann spricht er nicht zu Menschen, denn niemand versteht ihn. Er spricht zu Gott, und was er durch Gottes Geist redet, bleibt ein Geheimnis.
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Wer aber eine prophetische Botschaft von Gott empfängt, kann sie an andere Menschen weitergeben. Er hilft ihnen, er tröstet und ermutigt sie.
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Wer in unbekannten Sprachen redet, stärkt seinen persönlichen Glauben. Wer aber in Gottes Auftrag prophetisch spricht, stärkt die ganze Gemeinde.
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
Ich will schon, dass ihr alle in unbekannten Sprachen redet. Aber noch besser wäre, ihr könntet alle in Gottes Auftrag prophetisch sprechen. Das ist wichtiger, als in unbekannten Sprachen zu reden, es sei denn, das Gesprochene wird übersetzt, damit die ganze Gemeinde einen Gewinn davon hat.
Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
Stellt euch doch einmal vor, liebe Brüder und Schwestern, ich komme zu euch und rede in einer Sprache, die niemand kennt. Davon hättet ihr gar nichts. Nützen würde euch mein Besuch nur dann, wenn ich euch klar sage, was Gott mir offenbart hat. Nur wenn ich verständliche Worte gebrauche, um euch seinen Willen zu erklären, in Gottes Auftrag prophetisch zu reden oder euch zu unterweisen, hättet ihr einen Gewinn davon.
And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
Es ist genauso wie bei Musikinstrumenten. Bei einer Flöte etwa oder einer Harfe muss man unterschiedliche Töne hören können, sonst erkennt keiner die Melodie.
For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
Wenn der Trompeter nicht ein klares Signal gibt, wird sich kein Soldat zum Kampf bereitmachen.
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
Genauso ist es beim Reden in unbekannten Sprachen. Wenn ihr unverständlich redet, wird euch niemand verstehen. Ihr redet nur in den Wind.
There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
Es gibt auf der Welt so viele Sprachen, und alle haben ihren Sinn.
Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
Wenn ich aber die Sprache eines anderen Menschen nicht kenne, können wir uns nicht verständigen.
Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
So ist es auch mit euch: Wenn ihr euch schon so eifrig um die Gaben bemüht, die der Heilige Geist schenkt, dann setzt auch alles daran, dass die ganze Gemeinde etwas davon hat.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
Wer also in einer unbekannten Sprache redet, der soll den Herrn darum bitten, dass er sie auch übersetzen kann.
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
Denn wenn ich in solchen Sprachen aus meinem Innersten heraus zu Gott bete, verstehe ich nicht, was ich rede.
What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Wie verhalte ich mich nun richtig? Ich will beten, was Gottes Geist mir eingibt; aber ich will beim Beten auch meinen Verstand gebrauchen. Ich will Loblieder singen, die Gottes Geist mir schenkt; aber ebenso will ich beim Singen meinen Verstand einsetzen.
Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
Wenn du Gott nur in unbekannten Sprachen anbetest, die sein Geist dir eingibt, wie soll jemand, der diese Sprache nicht versteht, dein Gebet mit einem »Amen« bekräftigen? Er weiß doch gar nicht, was du gesagt hast!
For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
Da kann dein Gebet noch so gut und schön sein, der andere wird dadurch in seinem Glauben nicht gestärkt.
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
Ich bin Gott dankbar, dass ich mehr als ihr alle in unbekannten Sprachen rede!
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
In der Gemeinde aber will ich lieber fünf verständliche Worte reden, damit ich die Zuhörer unterweisen kann, als zehntausend Worte in einer Sprache, die keiner versteht.
Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Liebe Brüder und Schwestern, seid, was eure Vernunft betrifft, doch nicht wie kleine Kinder, die nicht verstehen, was man ihnen erklärt! Im Bösen, darin sollt ihr unerfahren sein wie Kinder; in eurem Denken aber sollt ihr reife, erwachsene Menschen sein.
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
In der Heiligen Schrift heißt es: »Ich will zu diesem Volk in fremden, unbekannten Sprachen reden. Aber auch dann wollen sie nicht auf mich hören, spricht der Herr.«
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Das Reden in unbekannten Sprachen ist also ein Zeichen Gottes, allerdings nicht für die Gläubigen; es ist vielmehr ein Zeichen des Gerichts für die Ungläubigen. Beim prophetischen Reden in Gottes Auftrag dagegen ist es umgekehrt: Es gilt nicht den Ungläubigen, sondern den Gläubigen. Daran wird deutlich, dass Gott in seiner Gemeinde gegenwärtig ist.
If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
Stellt euch vor, die Gemeinde versammelt sich, und jeder redet in einer anderen unbekannten Sprache. Nun kommt jemand dazu, der das nicht kennt, oder einer, der noch kein Christ ist. Wird er nicht sagen: »Ihr seid alle verrückt«?
But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
Wenn ihr dagegen alle in verständlichen Worten prophetisch redet und ein Ungläubiger oder Fremder kommt dazu, wird ihn dann nicht alles, was ihr sagt, von seiner Schuld überzeugen und in seinem Gewissen treffen?
And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
Was er bis dahin sich selbst nie eingestanden hat, wird ihm jetzt plötzlich klar. Er wird sich niederwerfen, Gott anbeten und bekennen: »Gott ist wirklich mitten unter euch!«
Orderly Worship
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.

Was bedeutet das nun für euch, liebe Brüder und Schwestern? Wenn ihr zusammenkommt, hat jeder etwas beizutragen: Einige singen ein Loblied, andere unterweisen die Gemeinde im Glauben. Einige geben weiter, was Gott ihnen offenbart hat, andere reden in unbekannten Sprachen, und wieder andere übersetzen das Gesprochene für alle. Wichtig ist, dass alles die Gemeinde aufbaut.
If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
Während eines Gottesdienstes sollen höchstens zwei oder drei in unbekannten Sprachen reden, und zwar einer nach dem anderen. Was sie gesagt haben, soll gleich für alle übersetzt werden.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Wenn dafür niemand da ist, sollen die Betreffenden schweigen. Sie können ja für sich allein beten; Gott wird sie hören.
Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
Auch von den Propheten, die Gottes Botschaften empfangen, sollen zwei oder drei sprechen; die anderen sollen das Gesagte beurteilen.
If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
Der Prophet, der eine Botschaft von Gott bekommen hat, soll seine Rede beenden, wenn Gott einem der Anwesenden eine neue Botschaft eingibt.
For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
Ihr könnt doch alle der Reihe nach in Gottes Auftrag reden, damit alle lernen und alle ermutigt werden.
And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
Wer eine Botschaft von Gott bekommt, verliert dabei ja nicht die Kontrolle über sich.
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
Denn Gott will keine Unordnung, er will Frieden. Wie in allen Gemeinden
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
sollen sich auch bei euch die Frauen in den Gottesdiensten still verhalten und dort nicht das Wort führen. Stattdessen sollen sie sich unterordnen, wie es schon das Gesetz vorschreibt.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
Wenn sie etwas wissen wollen, können sie zu Hause ihren Mann fragen. Denn es gehört sich nicht, dass Frauen in der Gemeinde das Wort führen.
What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
Ihr seid anderer Meinung? Bildet ihr euch etwa ein, Gottes Botschaft sei von euch in die Welt ausgegangen? Oder glaubt ihr, die Einzigen zu sein, die sie gehört haben?
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
Wenn einer meint, Gott rede durch ihn oder er sei in besonderer Weise von Gottes Geist begabt, dann muss er auch erkennen, dass alles, was ich hier anordne, dem Willen des Herrn entspricht.
But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
Wer das aber nicht anerkennt, den erkennt auch Gott nicht an.
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Also, meine Brüder und Schwestern, strebt nach der Gabe, in Gottes Auftrag prophetisch zu sprechen, und hindert keinen, in unbekannten Sprachen zu reden.
