Abram Promised a Son
After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying,
“Do not fear, Abram,
I am a shield to you;
Your reward shall be very great.”

Your reward shall be very great.”
Nach diesen Ereignissen erging das Wort des HERRN in einer Vision an Abram: Fürchte dich nicht, Abram, ich selbst bin dir ein Schild; dein Lohn wird sehr groß sein.
Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
Abram antwortete: Herr und GOTT, was kannst du mir geben? Ich gehe kinderlos dahin und Erbe meines Hauses ist Eliëser aus Damaskus.
And Abram said, “Since You have given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.”
Und Abram sagte: Siehe, du hast mir keine Nachkommen gegeben; so wird mich mein Haussklave beerben.
Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.”
Aber siehe, das Wort des HERRN erging an ihn: Nicht er wird dich beerben, sondern dein leiblicher Sohn wird dein Erbe sein.
And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”
Er führte ihn hinaus und sprach: Sieh doch zum Himmel hinauf und zähl die Sterne, wenn du sie zählen kannst! Und er sprach zu ihm: So zahlreich werden deine Nachkommen sein.
Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.
Und er glaubte dem HERRN und das rechnete er ihm als Gerechtigkeit an.
And He said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.”
Er sprach zu ihm: Ich bin der HERR, der dich aus Ur in Chaldäa herausgeführt hat, um dir dieses Land zu eigen zu geben.
He said, “O Lord GOD, how may I know that I will possess it?”
Da sagte Abram: Herr und GOTT, woran soll ich erkennen, dass ich es zu eigen bekomme?
So He said to him, “Bring Me a three year old heifer, and a three year old female goat, and a three year old ram, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
Der HERR antwortete ihm: Hol mir ein dreijähriges Rind, eine dreijährige Ziege, einen dreijährigen Widder, eine Turteltaube und eine junge Taube!
Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds.
Abram brachte ihm alle diese Tiere, schnitt sie in der Mitte durch und legte je einen Teil dem andern gegenüber; die Vögel aber zerschnitt er nicht.
The birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
Da stießen Raubvögel auf die toten Tiere herab, doch Abram verscheuchte sie.
Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him.
Bei Sonnenuntergang fiel auf Abram ein tiefer Schlaf. Und siehe, Angst und großes Dunkel fielen auf ihn.
God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years.
Er sprach zu Abram: Du sollst wissen: Deine Nachkommen werden als Fremde in einem Land wohnen, das ihnen nicht gehört. Sie werden dort als Sklaven dienen und man wird sie vierhundert Jahre lang unterdrücken.
“But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions.
Aber auch über das Volk, dem sie als Sklaven dienen, werde ich Gericht halten und nachher werden sie mit reicher Habe ausziehen.
“As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age.
Du aber wirst in Frieden zu deinen Vätern heimgehen; im glücklichen Alter wirst du begraben werden.
“Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.”
Erst die vierte Generation wird hierher zurückkehren; denn noch hat die Schuld der Amoriter nicht ihr volles Maß erreicht.
It came about when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed between these pieces.
Die Sonne war untergegangen und es war dunkel geworden. Und siehe, ein rauchender Ofen und eine lodernde Fackel waren da; sie fuhren zwischen jenen Fleischstücken hindurch.
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying,
“To your descendants I have given this land,
From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates:
