The Doom of Sodom
Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Die beiden Engel kamen am Abend nach Sodom. Lot saß im Stadttor von Sodom. Als er sie sah, erhob er sich, trat auf sie zu, warf sich mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder
And he said, “Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” They said however, “No, but we shall spend the night in the square.”
und sagte: Bitte, meine Herren, kehrt doch im Haus eures Knechtes ein, bleibt über Nacht und wascht euch die Füße! Am Morgen könnt ihr euren Weg fortsetzen. Nein, sagten sie, wir wollen auf dem Platz übernachten.
Yet he urged them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he prepared a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
Er bedrängte sie so sehr, dass sie bei ihm einkehrten und in sein Haus kamen. Er bereitete ihnen ein Mahl, ließ ungesäuerte Brote backen und sie aßen.
Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter;
Sie waren noch nicht schlafen gegangen, da umstellten die Männer der Stadt das Haus, die Männer von Sodom, Jung und Alt, alles Volk von weit und breit.
and they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them.”
Sie riefen nach Lot und fragten ihn: Wo sind die Männer, die heute Nacht zu dir gekommen sind? Bring sie zu uns heraus, wir wollen mit ihnen verkehren.
But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him,
Da ging Lot zu ihnen hinaus vor die Tür, schloss sie hinter sich zu
and said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.
und sagte: Meine Brüder, tut doch nicht das Böse!
“Now behold, I have two daughters who have not had relations with man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them whatever you like; only do nothing to these men, inasmuch as they have come under the shelter of my roof.”
Seht doch, ich habe zwei Töchter, die noch nicht mit einem Mann verkehrt haben. Ich will sie zu euch herausbringen. Dann tut mit ihnen, was euch gefällt. Nur diesen Männern tut nichts; denn deshalb sind sie ja unter den Schutz meines Daches getreten.
But they said, “Stand aside.” Furthermore, they said, “This one came in as an alien, and already he is acting like a judge; now we will treat you worse than them.” So they pressed hard against Lot and came near to break the door.
Sie aber sagten: Geh weg! Und sie sagten: Kommt da so einer daher, ein Fremder, und will sich als Richter aufspielen! Nun wollen wir dir Böseres antun, noch mehr als ihnen. Sie setzten dem Mann, nämlich Lot, arg zu und waren schon dabei, die Tür aufzubrechen.
But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.
Da streckten jene Männer die Hand aus, zogen Lot zu sich ins Haus und sperrten die Tür zu.
They struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the doorway.
Dann schlugen sie die Männer draußen vor dem Haus, Groß und Klein, mit Blindheit, sodass sie sich vergebens bemühten, den Eingang zu finden.
Then the two men said to Lot, “Whom else have you here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place;
Die Männer sagten zu Lot: Wer gehört hier noch zu dir? Ein Schwiegersohn, Söhne, Töchter oder sonst jemand in der Stadt? Bring sie weg von diesem Ort!
for we are about to destroy this place, because their outcry has become so great before the LORD that the LORD has sent us to destroy it.”
Wir wollen diesen Ort vernichten; denn groß ist das Klagegeschrei, das über sie zum HERRN gedrungen ist. Der HERR hat uns geschickt, die Stadt zu vernichten.
Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, and said, “Up, get out of this place, for the LORD will destroy the city.” But he appeared to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
Da ging Lot hinaus, redete auf seine Schwiegersöhne ein, die seine Töchter heiraten wollten, und sagte: Macht euch auf und verlasst diesen Ort; denn der HERR will die Stadt vernichten. Aber seine Schwiegersöhne meinten, er mache nur Spaß.
When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.”
Als die Morgenröte aufstieg, drängten die Engel Lot zur Eile und sagten: Auf, nimm deine Frau und deine beiden Töchter, die hier sind, damit du nicht wegen der Schuld der Stadt hinweggerafft wirst!
But he hesitated. So the men seized his hand and the hand of his wife and the hands of his two daughters, for the compassion of the LORD was upon him; and they brought him out, and put him outside the city.
Da er noch zögerte, fassten die Männer seine Hand, die Hand seiner Frau und die Hand seiner beiden Töchter, weil der HERR mit ihm Mitleid hatte. Sie führten ihn hinaus und ließen ihn erst draußen vor der Stadt los.
When they had brought them outside, one said, “Escape for your life! Do not look behind you, and do not stay anywhere in the valley; escape to the mountains, or you will be swept away.”
Während die Männer sie hinaus ins Freie führten, sagte der eine: Rette dich, es geht um dein Leben! Sieh dich nicht um und bleib im ganzen Umkreis nicht stehen! Rette dich ins Gebirge, sonst wirst du weggerafft!
“Now behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your lovingkindness, which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, for the disaster will overtake me and I will die;
Siehe, dein Knecht hat Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden. Du hast mir große Gunst erwiesen und mir mein Leben bewahrt. Ich kann mich nicht ins Gebirge retten, ohne dass mich das Unheil vorher ereilt und ich sterben muss.
now behold, this town is near enough to flee to, and it is small. Please, let me escape there (is it not small?) that my life may be saved.”
Siehe doch, die Stadt in der Nähe, dorthin könnte man fliehen. Sie ist doch klein; dorthin kann ich mich retten. Ist sie nicht klein? So könnte ich am Leben bleiben.
He said to him, “Behold, I grant you this request also, not to overthrow the town of which you have spoken.
Er antwortete ihm: Siehe, auch das will ich dir gewähren und die Stadt, von der du sprichst, nicht zum Einsturz bringen.
“Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the town was called Zoar.
Schnell, rette dich dorthin; denn ich kann nichts unternehmen, bevor du dort angekommen bist. Deshalb gab er der Stadt den Namen Zoar, die Kleine.
The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar.
Als die Sonne über dem Land aufgegangen und Lot in Zoar angekommen war,
Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven,
ließ der HERR auf Sodom und Gomorra Schwefel und Feuer regnen, vom HERRN, vom Himmel herab.
and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
Er ließ ihre Städte einstürzen mitsamt ihrem ganzen Umkreis, auch alle Einwohner der Städte und alles, was auf den Feldern wuchs.
But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
Als sich aber seine Frau hinter ihm umblickte, wurde sie zu einer Salzsäule.
Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD;
Am frühen Morgen begab sich Abraham an den Ort, an dem er dem HERRN gegenübergestanden hatte.
and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a furnace.
Er schaute gegen Sodom und Gomorra und auf das ganze Gebiet im Umkreis. Er schaute hin und siehe: Qualm stieg von der Erde auf wie der Qualm aus einem Schmelzofen.
Thus it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.
Als Gott die Städte der Gegend vernichtete, gedachte Gott Abrahams und geleitete Lot mitten aus der Zerstörung heraus, während er die Städte, in denen Lot gewohnt hatte, einstürzen ließ.
Lot Is Debased
Lot went up from Zoar, and stayed in the mountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to stay in Zoar; and he stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters.
Lot zog von Zoar hinauf und ließ sich mit seinen beiden Töchtern im Gebirge nieder. Er fürchtete sich nämlich, in Zoar zu bleiben. Er wohnte in einer Höhle, er und seine beiden Töchter.
Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of the earth.
Eines Tages sagte die Ältere zur Jüngeren: Unser Vater wird alt und einen Mann, der mit uns verkehrt, wie es in aller Welt üblich ist, gibt es nicht.
“Come, let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him that we may preserve our family through our father.”
Komm, geben wir unserem Vater Wein zu trinken und legen wir uns zu ihm, damit wir durch unseren Vater Nachkommen erhalten.
So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
Sie gaben also ihrem Vater in jener Nacht Wein zu trinken; dann kam die Ältere und legte sich zu ihrem Vater. Er merkte nicht, wie sie sich hinlegte und wie sie aufstand.
On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve our family through our father.”
Am anderen Tag sagte die Ältere zur Jüngeren: Siehe, ich habe gestern bei meinem Vater gelegen. Geben wir ihm auch heute Nacht Wein zu trinken, dann komm und leg du dich zu ihm! So werden wir durch unseren Vater Nachkommen erhalten.
So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
Sie gaben ihrem Vater also auch in jener Nacht Wein zu trinken; dann machte sich die Jüngere auf und legte sich zu ihm. Er merkte nicht, wie sie sich hinlegte und wie sie aufstand.
Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.
Beide Töchter Lots wurden von ihrem Vater schwanger.
The firstborn bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
Die Ältere gebar einen Sohn und gab ihm den Namen Moab. Er gilt als Stammvater der Moabiter bis heute.
