Isaac Settles in Gerar
Now there was a famine in the land, besides the previous famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. So Isaac went to Gerar, to Abimelech king of the Philistines.

Im Land herrschte eine Hungersnot, eine andere als die frühere zur Zeit Abrahams. Isaak begab sich nach Gerar zu Abimelech, dem König der Philister.
The LORD appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the land of which I shall tell you.
Da erschien ihm der HERR und sprach: Geh nicht nach Ägypten hinunter, bleib in dem Land, das ich dir nenne!
“Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham.
Halte dich als Fremder in diesem Land auf! Ich werde mit dir sein und dich segnen. Denn dir und deinen Nachkommen gebe ich alle diese Länder und stehe zu dem Eid, den ich deinem Vater Abraham geleistet habe.
“I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;
Ich mache deine Nachkommen zahlreich wie die Sterne am Himmel und gebe ihnen alle diese Länder. Mit deinen Nachkommen werden alle Völker der Erde sich segnen,
because Abraham obeyed Me and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My laws.”
weil Abraham auf meine Stimme gehört und weil er auf meine Anordnungen, Gebote, Satzungen und Weisungen geachtet hat.
When the men of the place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister,” for he was afraid to say, “my wife,” thinking, “the men of the place might kill me on account of Rebekah, for she is beautiful.”
Als sich die Männer des Ortes nach seiner Frau erkundigten, sagte er: Sie ist meine Schwester. Denn er fürchtete sich zu sagen: Sie ist meine Frau. Er dachte: Damit mich die Männer des Ortes nicht wegen Rebekka umbringen, denn sie sah schön aus.
It came about, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out through a window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was caressing his wife Rebekah.
Nachdem er längere Zeit dort zugebracht hatte, schaute Abimelech, der König der Philister, durch das Fenster und siehe, Isaak liebkoste seine Frau Rebekka.
Then Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Behold, certainly she is your wife! How then did you say, ‘She is my sister’?” And Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘I might die on account of her.’”
Da rief Abimelech Isaak und sagte: Sieh da, sie ist deine Frau. Wie konntest du sagen: Sie ist meine Schwester? Da antwortete ihm Isaak: Ich sagte mir: Ich möchte nicht ihretwegen sterben.
Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.”
Abimelech entgegnete: Was hast du uns da angetan? Beinahe hätte jemand aus dem Volk bei deiner Frau gelegen; dann hättest du über uns Schuld gebracht.
So Abimelech charged all the people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”
Abimelech ordnete für das ganze Volk an: Wer diesen Mann oder seine Frau anrührt, wird mit dem Tod bestraft.
Now Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. And the LORD blessed him,
Isaak säte in diesem Land und er erntete in diesem Jahr hundertfältig. Der HERR segnete ihn;
and the man became rich, and continued to grow richer until he became very wealthy;
der Mann wurde reicher und reicher, bis er sehr wohlhabend war.
for he had possessions of flocks and herds and a great household, so that the Philistines envied him.
Er besaß Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder und zahlreiches Gesinde, sodass ihn die Philister beneideten.
Now all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines stopped up by filling them with earth.
Die Philister schütteten alle Brunnen zu, die zur Zeit seines Vaters Abraham die Knechte seines Vaters gegraben hatten, und füllten sie mit Erde.
Then Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are too powerful for us.”
Da sagte Abimelech zu Isaak: Zieh von uns fort; denn du bist uns viel zu mächtig geworden!
And Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar, and settled there.
Isaak zog fort, schlug sein Lager im Tal von Gerar auf und ließ sich dort nieder.
Quarrel over the Wells
Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he gave them the same names which his father had given them.
Die Brunnen, die man zur Zeit seines Vaters Abraham gegraben hatte und die die Philister nach dem Tod Abrahams zugeschüttet hatten, ließ Isaak wieder aufgraben und gab ihnen dieselben Namen, die ihnen sein Vater gegeben hatte.
But when Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and found there a well of flowing water,
Die Knechte Isaaks gruben im Bachtal und fanden dort einen Brunnen mit frischem Wasser.
the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they contended with him.
Die Hirten von Gerar stritten mit den Hirten Isaaks und sagten: Uns gehört das Wasser. Da gab er dem Brunnen den Namen Esek — Zank — , denn sie hatten sich um ihn gezankt.
Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over it too, so he named it Sitnah.
Als sie einen anderen Brunnen gruben, stritten sie auch um ihn; so gab er ihm den Namen Sitna — Streit — .
He moved away from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it; so he named it Rehoboth, for he said, “At last the LORD has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
Darauf brach er von dort auf und grub wieder einen anderen Brunnen. Um ihn stritten sie nicht mehr. Da gab er ihm den Namen Rehobot — Weite — und sagte: Jetzt hat uns der HERR weiten Raum verschafft und wir sind im Land fruchtbar geworden.
The LORD appeared to him the same night and said,
“I am the God of your father Abraham;
Do not fear, for I am with you.
I will bless you, and multiply your descendants,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”
“I am the God of your father Abraham;
Do not fear, for I am with you.
I will bless you, and multiply your descendants,
For the sake of My servant Abraham.”
In jener Nacht erschien ihm der HERR und sprach: Ich bin der Gott deines Vaters Abraham. Fürchte dich nicht, denn ich bin mit dir! Ich segne dich und mache deine Nachkommen zahlreich wegen meines Knechtes Abraham.
So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.
Dort baute er einen Altar, rief den Namen des HERRN an und schlug sein Zelt auf. Isaaks Knechte hoben dort einen Brunnen aus.
Covenant with Abimelech
Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with his adviser Ahuzzath and Phicol the commander of his army.
Als Abimelech aus Gerar mit seinem Vertrauten Ahusat und seinem Feldherrn Pichol zu ihm kam,
Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?”
sagte Isaak zu ihnen: Weshalb kommt ihr zu mir? Ihr habt mich gehasst und habt mich aus eurem Gebiet ausgewiesen.
They said, “We see plainly that the LORD has been with you; so we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, even between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you,
Sie entgegneten: Wir haben klar gesehen, dass der HERR mit dir ist, und wir dachten: Zwischen uns und dir sollte ein Eid stehen. Wir wollen mit dir einen Bund schließen:
that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you and have done to you nothing but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the LORD.’”
Du wirst uns nichts Böses zufügen, wie auch wir dich nicht angetastet haben; wir haben dir nur Gutes erwiesen und dich in Frieden ziehen lassen. Jetzt bist du der Gesegnete des HERRN.
Then he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.
Da bereitete er ihnen ein Mahl und sie aßen und tranken.
In the morning they arose early and exchanged oaths; then Isaac sent them away and they departed from him in peace.
Früh am Morgen standen sie auf und leisteten einander den Eid. Isaak entließ sie und sie schieden von ihm in Frieden.
Now it came about on the same day, that Isaac’s servants came in and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”
Am selben Tag kamen die Knechte Isaaks und erzählten ihm von dem Brunnen, den sie gegraben hatten. Sie meldeten ihm: Wir haben Wasser gefunden.
So he called it Shibah; therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.
Da nannte er ihn Schiba — Schwur — ; darum heißt die Stadt bis auf den heutigen Tag Beerscheba — Schwurbrunnen — .
When Esau was forty years old he married Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite;
Als Esau vierzig Jahre alt war, nahm er Judit, die Tochter des Hetiters Beeri, und Basemat, die Tochter des Hetiters Elon, zu Frauen.
