Then Joseph fell on his father’s face, and wept over him and kissed him.

Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.
Dann beauftragte er seine Ärzte, den Körper einzubalsamieren.
Now forty days were required for it, for such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.
Das dauerte wie gewohnt vierzig Tage, und ganz Ägypten trauerte siebzig Tage lang um Jakob.
When the days of mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying,
Als die Trauerzeit vorüber war, bat Josef die königlichen Hofbeamten, dem Pharao auszurichten:
‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.’”
»Ich habe meinem Vater geschworen, ihn in Kanaan zu bestatten. Dort ist unser Familiengrab. Lass mich meinen Vater nach Kanaan bringen! Danach komme ich wieder zurück!«
Pharaoh said, “Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear.”
Der Pharao ließ ihm sagen: »Du kannst deinen Vater bestatten, wie du es ihm versprochen hast.«
So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
Josef machte sich auf den Weg. Mit ihm zogen die obersten Beamten und Würdenträger Ägyptens,
and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father’s household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen.
seine eigene Familie und die Familien seiner Brüder sowie alle anderen Angehörigen Jakobs. Nur die kleinen Kinder und das Vieh ließen sie in Goschen zurück.
There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company.
Auch Kriegswagen und Reiter begleiteten die vielen Menschen, die Jakob die letzte Ehre erwiesen. Es war ein sehr großer Trauerzug.
When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he observed seven days mourning for his father.
Als sie nach Goren-Atad östlich des Jordan kamen, ließ Josef die Totenklage für seinen Vater halten. Sieben Tage lang wurde tief getrauert und der Tod Jakobs beweint.
Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians.” Therefore it was named Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
Die einheimischen Kanaaniter beobachteten sie und staunten: »Seht, wie groß die Trauer der Ägypter ist!« Darum heißt der Ort Abel-Mizrajim (»Trauer der Ägypter«).
Burial at Machpelah
Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them;
Jakobs Söhne erfüllten den Wunsch ihres Vaters und brachten ihn nach Kanaan. Sie bestatteten ihn in der Höhle bei Machpela, östlich von Mamre, in dem Familiengrab, das Abraham damals von dem Hetiter Efron gekauft hatte.
After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
Danach kehrten Josef und seine Brüder mit dem Trauerzug nach Ägypten zurück.
When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!”
Weil ihr Vater nun tot war, bekamen Josefs Brüder Angst. »Was ist, wenn Josef sich jetzt doch noch rächen will und uns alles Böse heimzahlt, was wir ihm angetan haben?«
So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father charged before he died, saying,
Sie schickten einen Boten zu Josef mit der Nachricht: »Bevor dein Vater starb, beauftragte er uns, dir zu sagen:
‘Thus you shall say to Joseph, “Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
›Vergib deinen Brüdern das Unrecht von damals! Trage ihnen nicht nach, was sie dir Schlimmes angetan haben!‹ Darum bitten wir dich jetzt: Verzeih uns! Wir dienen doch demselben Gott wie du und unser Vater!« Als Josef das hörte, musste er weinen.
Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
Danach kamen die Brüder selbst zu ihm, warfen sich zu Boden und sagten: »Bitte, Herr, wir sind deine Diener!«
But Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place?
Aber Josef erwiderte: »Habt keine Angst! Ich maße mir doch nicht an, euch an Gottes Stelle zu richten!
“As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.
Ihr wolltet mir Böses tun, aber Gott hat Gutes daraus entstehen lassen. Durch meine hohe Stellung konnte ich vielen Menschen das Leben retten.
“So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
Ihr braucht also nichts zu befürchten. Ich werde für euch und eure Familien sorgen.« So beruhigte Josef seine Brüder und redete ihnen freundlich zu.
Death of Joseph
Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father’s household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years.
Josef, seine Brüder und ihre Familien blieben in Ägypten wohnen. Josef wurde 110 Jahre alt.
Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees.
Er sah noch Ephraims Kinder und Enkel. Auch erlebte er noch die Kinder von Machir, dem Sohn Manasses, und nahm sie in seine Familie auf.
Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.”
Als Josef merkte, dass er bald sterben würde, versammelte er seine Brüder um sich und sagte: »Mein Leben geht bald zu Ende. Aber Gott wird euch zu Hilfe kommen, darauf könnt ihr euch verlassen. Er wird euch aus Ägypten herausführen und in das Land bringen, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob versprochen hat.
Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here.”
Schwört mir, dass ihr meine Gebeine mitnehmt, wenn Gott euch nach Kanaan bringt!« Die Brüder schworen es.
