Die Feinde von Juda und Benjamin erfuhren, dass die Heimkehrer für den HERRN, den Gott Israels, einen Tempel bauten.
they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we, like you, seek your God; and we have been sacrificing to Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”
Da kamen sie zu Serubbabel und den Familienoberhäuptern und sagten: Wir wollen zusammen mit euch bauen. Denn wie ihr suchen auch wir euren Gott auf und opfern ihm seit der Zeit des Königs Asarhaddon von Assur, der uns hierher gebracht hat.
But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “You have nothing in common with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build to the LORD God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia has commanded us.”
Aber Serubbabel, Jeschua und die übrigen Oberhäupter der Großfamilien Israels erwiderten ihnen: Es geht nicht, dass wir mit euch zusammen unserem Gott ein Haus bauen, sondern wir allein wollen für den HERRN, den Gott Israels, bauen, wie es uns König Kyrus, der König von Persien, geboten hat.
Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building,
Da machte das Volk des Landes die Leute von Juda mutlos und schreckte sie vom Bauen ab.
and hired counselors against them to frustrate their counsel all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Man bestach sogar königliche Räte gegen sie, um ihr Vorhaben zu vereiteln; das dauerte die ganze Regierungszeit des Perserkönigs Kyrus bis zur Regierung des Königs Darius von Persien.
Now in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
Als dann Xerxes König wurde, setzten sie zu Beginn seiner Herrschaft eine Anklage gegen die Bewohner von Juda und Jerusalem auf.
And in the days of Artaxerxes, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel and the rest of his colleagues wrote to Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the text of the letter was written in Aramaic and translated from Aramaic.
In der Zeit des Artaxerxes schrieb Bischlam zusammen mit Mitredat, Tabeel und seinen übrigen Amtsgenossen an den König Artaxerxes von Persien. Der Brief war ins Aramäische übersetzt und in aramäischer Schrift geschrieben.
The Letter to King Artaxerxes
Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to King Artaxerxes, as follows —
Ebenso schrieben der Befehlshaber Rehum und der Schreiber Schimschai einen Brief gegen Jerusalem an den König Artaxerxes,
then wrote Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe and the rest of their colleagues, the judges and the lesser governors, the officials, the secretaries, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites,
darauf dann der Befehlshaber Rehum und der Schreiber Schimschai sowie ihre übrigen Amtsgenossen, Leute aus Dina, Afarsatach, Tarpal, Persien, Erech, Babel und Susa — das sind Elamiter —
and the rest of the nations which the great and honorable Osnappar deported and settled in the city of Samaria, and in the rest of the region beyond the River. Now
und die übrigen Volksgruppen, die der große und berühmte Asenappar weggeführt und in den Städten von Samaria und im übrigen Gebiet jenseits des Stroms angesiedelt hat.
this is the copy of the letter which they sent to him:
“To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the men in the region beyond the River, and now
“To King Artaxerxes: Your servants, the men in the region beyond the River, and now
Dies ist nun eine Abschrift des Briefes, den sie an Artaxerxes schickten: An den König Artaxerxes, von deinen Knechten, den Leuten jenseits des Stroms.
let it be known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us at Jerusalem; they are rebuilding the rebellious and evil city and are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations.
Dem König sei gemeldet: Die Juden, die aus deiner Nähe wegzogen, sind zu uns nach Jerusalem gekommen. Sie bauen die aufrührerische und böse Stadt wieder auf; sie stellen die Mauern wieder her und sichern die Fundamente.
“Now let it be known to the king, that if that city is rebuilt and the walls are finished, they will not pay tribute, custom or toll, and it will damage the revenue of the kings.
Dem König sei nun gemeldet: Wenn diese Stadt wieder aufgebaut ist und ihre Mauern vollendet sind, dann entrichten die Juden keine Steuern, Abgaben und Zölle mehr. So bringt sie den Königen schließlich nur Schaden.
“Now because we are in the service of the palace, and it is not fitting for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,
Nun ist aber das Salz des Palastes unser Salz; darum ist es nicht recht, wenn wir mit ansehen, wie der König erniedrigt wird. Deshalb senden wir dem König Nachricht:
so that a search may be made in the record books of your fathers. And you will discover in the record books and learn that that city is a rebellious city and damaging to kings and provinces, and that they have incited revolt within it in past days; therefore that city was laid waste.
Man möge in der Chronik deiner Väter nachforschen; du wirst dann in der Chronik finden und feststellen: Diese Stadt ist eine aufrührerische Stadt; sie hat Königen und Provinzen Schaden gebracht und von jeher hat man in ihr Empörung angestiftet. Deshalb ist diese Stadt ja auch zerstört worden.
“We inform the king that if that city is rebuilt and the walls finished, as a result you will have no possession in the province beyond the River.”
Wir machen also den König darauf aufmerksam: Wird diese Stadt wieder aufgebaut und werden ihre Mauern vollendet, dann hast du keinen Anteil mehr am Gebiet jenseits des Stroms.
The King Replies and Work Stops
Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the commander, to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their colleagues who live in Samaria and in the rest of the provinces beyond the River: “Peace. And now
Der König schickte folgende Erwiderung: An den Befehlshaber Rehum und den Schreiber Schimschai sowie ihre übrigen Genossen, die in Samaria und dem übrigen Gebiet jenseits des Stroms wohnen, meinen Gruß.
the document which you sent to us has been translated and read before me.
Das Schriftstück, das ihr an uns gesandt habt, ist mir Wort für Wort vorgelesen worden.
“A decree has been issued by me, and a search has been made and it has been discovered that that city has risen up against the kings in past days, that rebellion and revolt have been perpetrated in it,
Daraufhin befahl ich nachzuforschen und man fand: Diese Stadt hat sich von jeher gegen die Könige erhoben und in ihr gab es immer wieder Aufruhr und Empörung.
that mighty kings have ruled over Jerusalem, governing all the provinces beyond the River, and that tribute, custom and toll were paid to them.
Mächtige Könige geboten über Jerusalem und herrschten über das ganze Gebiet jenseits des Stroms und ihnen entrichtete man Steuern, Abgaben und Zölle.
“So, now issue a decree to make these men stop work, that this city may not be rebuilt until a decree is issued by me.
Gebt also Befehl, dass man jenen Männern ihr Tun verwehrt! Diese Stadt darf nicht wieder aufgebaut werden, bis weitere Anordnungen von mir ergehen.
“Beware of being negligent in carrying out this matter; why should damage increase to the detriment of the kings?”
Hütet euch, in dieser Sache nachlässig zu sein; sonst könnte großer Schaden zum Nachteil der Könige entstehen.
Then as soon as the copy of King Artaxerxes’ document was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their colleagues, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews and stopped them by force of arms.
Sobald das Schreiben des Königs Artaxerxes vor Rehum und dem Schreiber Schimschai sowie ihren Amtsgenossen verlesen worden war, gingen diese eilends nach Jerusalem zu den Juden und hinderten sie mit Waffengewalt an ihrer Arbeit.
