The Enemy’s Plot
Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, to Geshem the Arab and to the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall, and that no breach remained in it, although at that time I had not set up the doors in the gates,

Sanballat, Tobija, der Araber Geschem und unsere übrigen Feinde erfuhren, dass ich die Mauer fertig gebaut hatte und dass in ihr keine Lücke mehr war. Allerdings hatte ich damals die Torflügel noch nicht in die Tore eingesetzt.
then Sanballat and Geshem sent a message to me, saying, “Come, let us meet together at Chephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they were planning to harm me.
Da ließen Sanballat und Geschem mir sagen: Komm, wir wollen uns in Kefirim in der Ebene von Ono treffen. Sie hatten aber Böses gegen mich im Sinn.
So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?”
Ich schickte Boten an sie mit der Antwort: Ich arbeite gerade an einem großen Werk; darum kann ich nicht kommen. Die Arbeit würde stocken, wenn ich sie verließe und zu euch käme.
They sent messages to me four times in this manner, and I answered them in the same way.
Viermal schickten sie mir die gleiche Einladung und jedes Mal gab ich ihnen die gleiche Antwort.
Then Sanballat sent his servant to me in the same manner a fifth time with an open letter in his hand.
Da schickte mir Sanballat in gleicher Weise zum fünften Mal seinen Diener; er brachte einen unverschlossenen Brief,
In it was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel; therefore you are rebuilding the wall. And you are to be their king, according to these reports.
in dem stand: Unter den Völkern geht das Gerücht um — und Geschem bestätigt es — , dass du mit den Juden einen Aufstand planst. Deshalb baust du die Mauer auf. Und du willst, wie man sagt, ihr König werden.
“You have also appointed prophets to proclaim in Jerusalem concerning you, ‘A king is in Judah!’ And now it will be reported to the king according to these reports. So come now, let us take counsel together.”
Du sollst auch Propheten bestellt haben, die in Jerusalem von dir sagen und ausrufen sollen: Juda hat einen König. Solche Gerüchte werden aber dem König zu Ohren kommen. Darum komm jetzt, wir wollen zusammen beraten.
Then I sent a message to him saying, “Such things as you are saying have not been done, but you are inventing them in your own mind.”
Ich ließ ihm antworten: Nichts von dem, was du behauptest, ist geschehen. Das hast du alles selbst erfunden.
For all of them were trying to frighten us, thinking, “They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done.” But now, O God, strengthen my hands.
Sie alle wollten uns nämlich einschüchtern; sie dachten: Dann lassen sie die Hände von dem Werk und es kommt nicht zustande. Nun aber rührte ich die Hände erst recht.
When I entered the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was confined at home, he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you, and they are coming to kill you at night.”
Eines Tages ging ich in das Haus Schemajas, des Sohnes Delajas, des Sohnes Mehetabels; er war nämlich dort festgehalten. Er sagte: Gehen wir zusammen in das Haus Gottes, ins Innere des Tempels, und verschließen wir die Türen des Tempels! Denn man wird kommen, um dich zu töten. In der Nacht wird man kommen, um dich zu töten.
But I said, “Should a man like me flee? And could one such as I go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”
Ich erwiderte: Sollte ein Mann wie ich fliehen? Wer von meinesgleichen würde am Leben bleiben, wenn er den Tempel beträte? Ich gehe nicht hin.
Then I perceived that surely God had not sent him, but he uttered his prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
Ich erkannte deutlich, dass nicht Gott ihn geschickt hatte; er hatte vielmehr diese Prophezeiung über mich nur gesprochen, weil Tobija und Sanballat ihn gedungen hatten.
He was hired for this reason, that I might become frightened and act accordingly and sin, so that they might have an evil report in order that they could reproach me.
Er war gedungen, damit ich aus Furcht so handeln und mich versündigen sollte. Damit wollten sie mich in üblen Ruf bringen, um mich verächtlich zu machen.
Remember, O my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these works of theirs, and also Noadiah the prophetess and the rest of the prophets who were trying to frighten me.
Mein Gott, vergiss dem Tobija und dem Sanballat nicht, was sie getan haben, auch nicht der Prophetin Noadja und den übrigen Propheten, die mir Angst machen wollten!
The Wall Is Finished
So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.
Nach zweiundfünfzig Tagen, am Fünfundzwanzigsten des Monats Elul, war die Mauer vollendet.
When all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations surrounding us saw it, they lost their confidence; for they recognized that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.
Als alle unsere Feinde es hörten, fürchteten sich alle Völker rings um uns her. Ihr Hochmut verging ihnen und sie mussten einsehen, dass unser Gott es war, der dieses Werk vollbracht hatte.
Also in those days many letters went from the nobles of Judah to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.
In jener Zeit sandten die Vornehmen von Juda auch viele Briefe an Tobija und Briefe von Tobija gelangten an sie.
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
Denn viele Menschen in Juda waren ihm durch einen Eid verpflichtet. Er war nämlich der Schwiegersohn Schechanjas, des Sohnes Arachs, und sein Sohn Johanan hatte die Tochter Meschullams, des Sohnes Berechjas, geheiratet.
