Eliphaz Accuses and Exhorts Job
Then Eliphaz the Temanite responded,

Da antwortete Eliphas von Theman und sprach:
“Can a vigorous man be of use to God,
Or a wise man be useful to himself?
Or a wise man be useful to himself?
Kann denn ein Mann Gott etwas nützen? Nur sich selber nützt ein Kluger.
“Is there any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous,
Or profit if you make your ways perfect?

Meinst du, dem Allmächtigen liege daran, daß du gerecht seist? Was hilft’s ihm, wenn deine Wege ohne Tadel sind?
“Is it because of your reverence that He reproves you,
That He enters into judgment against you?

Meinst du, wegen deiner Gottesfurcht strafe er dich und gehe mit dir ins Gericht?
“Is not your wickedness great,
And your iniquities without end?

Nein, deine Bosheit ist zu groß, und deiner Missetaten ist kein Ende.
“For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause,
And stripped men naked.

Du hast etwa deinem Bruder ein Pfand genommen ohne Ursache; du hast den Nackten die Kleider ausgezogen;
“To the weary you have given no water to drink,
And from the hungry you have withheld bread.

du hast die Müden nicht getränkt mit Wasser und hast dem Hungrigen dein Brot versagt;
“But the earth belongs to the mighty man,

du hast Gewalt im Lande geübt und prächtig darin gegessen;
“You have sent widows away empty,

die Witwen hast du leer lassen gehen und die Arme der Waisen zerbrochen.
“Therefore snares surround you,
And sudden dread terrifies you,

Darum bist du mit Stricken umgeben, und Furcht hat dich plötzlich erschreckt.

Solltest du denn nicht die Finsternis sehen und die Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt?
“Is not God in the height of heaven?

Ist nicht Gott hoch droben im Himmel? Siehe die Sterne an droben in der Höhe!
“You say, ‘What does God know?
Can He judge through the thick darkness?

Und du sprichst: »Was weiß Gott? Sollte er, was im Dunkel ist, richten können?
‘Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see;

Die Wolken sind seine Vordecke, und er sieht nicht; er wandelt im Umkreis des Himmels.
“Will you keep to the ancient path
Which wicked men have trod,

Achtest du wohl auf den Weg, darin vorzeiten die Ungerechten gegangen sind?

die vergangen sind, ehe denn es Zeit war, und das Wasser hat ihren Grund weggewaschen;
“They said to God, ‘Depart from us!’

die zu Gott sprachen: «Hebe dich von uns! was sollte der Allmächtige uns tun können?
“Yet He filled their houses with good things;

so er doch ihr Haus mit Gütern füllte. Aber der Gottlosen Rat sei ferne von mir.
“The righteous see and are glad,
And the innocent mock them,

Die Gerechten werden es sehen und sich freuen, und der Unschuldige wird ihrer spotten:
Saying, ‘Truly our adversaries are cut off,
And their abundance the fire has consumed.’

Fürwahr, unser Widersacher ist verschwunden; und sein Übriggelassenes hat das Feuer verzehrt.
“Yield now and be at peace with Him;
Thereby good will come to you.

So vertrage dich nun mit ihm und habe Frieden; daraus wird dir viel Gutes kommen.
“Please receive instruction from His mouth

Höre das Gesetz von seinem Munde und fasse seine Reden in dein Herz.
“If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored;

Wirst du dich bekehren zu dem Allmächtigen, so wirst du aufgebaut werden. Tue nur Unrecht ferne hinweg von deiner Hütte
And place your gold in the dust,

und wirf in den Staub dein Gold und zu den Steinen der Bäche das Ophirgold,

so wird der Allmächtige dein Gold sein und wie Silber, das dir zugehäuft wird.
“For then you will delight in the Almighty

Dann wirst du deine Lust haben an dem Allmächtigen und dein Antlitz zu Gott aufheben.
“You will pray to Him, and He will hear you;
And you will pay your vows.

So wirst du ihn bitten, und er wird dich hören, und wirst deine Gelübde bezahlen.
“You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you;
And light will shine on your ways.

Was du wirst vornehmen, wird er dir lassen gelingen; und das Licht wird auf deinem Wege scheinen.
“When you are cast down, you will speak with confidence,
And the humble person He will save.

Denn die sich demütigen, die erhöht er; und wer seine Augen niederschlägt, der wird genesen.
