Jonah’s Displeasure Rebuked

Das missfiel Jona ganz und gar und er wurde zornig.
He prayed to the LORD and said, “Please LORD, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity.
Er betete zum HERRN und sagte: Ach HERR, habe ich das nicht schon gesagt, als ich noch daheim war? Eben darum wollte ich ja nach Tarschisch fliehen; denn ich wusste, dass du ein gnädiger und barmherziger Gott bist, langmütig und reich an Huld und dass deine Drohungen dich reuen.
“Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for death is better to me than life.”
Darum, HERR, nimm doch nun mein Leben von mir! Denn es ist besser für mich zu sterben als zu leben.
The LORD said, “Do you have good reason to be angry?”
Da erwiderte der HERR: Ist es recht von dir, zornig zu sein?
Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of it. There he made a shelter for himself and sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city.
Da verließ Jona die Stadt und setzte sich östlich vor der Stadt nieder. Er machte sich dort ein Laubdach und setzte sich in seinen Schatten, um abzuwarten, was mit der Stadt geschah.
So the LORD God appointed a plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was extremely happy about the plant.
Da ließ Gott, der HERR, einen Rizinusstrauch über Jona emporwachsen, der seinem Kopf Schatten geben und seinen Ärger vertreiben sollte. Jona freute sich sehr über den Rizinusstrauch.
But God appointed a worm when dawn came the next day and it attacked the plant and it withered.
Als aber am nächsten Tag die Morgenröte heraufzog, schickte Gott einen Wurm, der den Rizinusstrauch annagte, sodass er verdorrte.
When the sun came up God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and begged with all his soul to die, saying, “Death is better to me than life.”
Und als die Sonne aufging, schickte Gott einen heißen Ostwind. Die Sonne stach Jona auf den Kopf, sodass er fast ohnmächtig wurde. Da wünschte er zu sterben und sagte: Es ist besser für mich zu sterben als zu leben.
Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.”
Gott aber sagte zu Jona: Ist es recht von dir, wegen des Rizinusstrauches zornig zu sein? Er antwortete: Ja, es ist recht, dass ich zornig bin und mir den Tod wünsche.
Then the LORD said, “You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight.
Darauf sagte der HERR: Du hast Mitleid mit einem Rizinusstrauch, für den du nicht gearbeitet und den du nicht großgezogen hast. Über Nacht war er da, über Nacht ist er eingegangen.
“Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?”
Soll ich da nicht Mitleid haben mit Ninive, der großen Stadt, in der mehr als hundertzwanzigtausend Menschen leben, die zwischen rechts und links nicht unterscheiden können — und außerdem so viel Vieh?
