Nineveh Repents
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,
Das Wort des HERRN erging zum zweiten Mal an Jona:
“Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.”
Mach dich auf den Weg und geh nach Ninive, der großen Stadt, und rufe ihr all das zu, was ich dir sagen werde!
So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk.
Jona machte sich auf den Weg und ging nach Ninive, wie der HERR es ihm befohlen hatte. Ninive war eine große Stadt vor Gott; man brauchte drei Tage, um sie zu durchqueren.
Then Jonah began to go through the city one day’s walk; and he cried out and said, “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”
Jona begann, in die Stadt hineinzugehen; er ging einen Tag lang und rief: Noch vierzig Tage und Ninive ist zerstört!
Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.
Und die Leute von Ninive glaubten Gott. Sie riefen ein Fasten aus und alle, Groß und Klein, zogen Bußgewänder an.
When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes.
Als die Nachricht davon den König von Ninive erreichte, stand er von seinem Thron auf, legte seinen Königsmantel ab, hüllte sich in ein Bußgewand und setzte sich in die Asche.
He issued a proclamation and it said, “In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water.
Er ließ in Ninive ausrufen: Befehl des Königs und seiner Großen: Alle Menschen und Tiere, Rinder, Schafe und Ziegen, sollen nichts essen, nicht weiden und kein Wasser trinken.
“But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands.
Sie sollen sich in Bußgewänder hüllen, Menschen und Tiere. Sie sollen mit aller Kraft zu Gott rufen und jeder soll umkehren von seinem bösen Weg und von der Gewalt, die an seinen Händen klebt.
“Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning anger so that we will not perish.”
Wer weiß, vielleicht reut es Gott wieder und er lässt ab von seinem glühenden Zorn, sodass wir nicht zugrunde gehen.
When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.
Und Gott sah ihr Verhalten; er sah, dass sie umkehrten und sich von ihren bösen Taten abwandten. Da reute Gott das Unheil, das er ihnen angedroht hatte, und er tat es nicht.
