Die Israeliten schrien entsetzt auf und weinten die ganze Nacht.
All the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!
Alle schimpften auf Mose und Aaron. »Wären wir doch in Ägypten oder hier in der Wüste gestorben!«, riefen sie.
“Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?”
»Warum bringt uns der HERR in solch ein Land? Damit man uns tötet und unsere Frauen und Kinder als Gefangene verschleppt? Lieber kehren wir nach Ägypten zurück!«
So they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.”
Dann legten sie sich einen Plan zurecht: »Lasst uns einen neuen Anführer wählen und zurück nach Ägypten gehen!«
Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces in the presence of all the assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel.
Da warfen sich Mose und Aaron vor den Augen des versammelten Volkes zu Boden.
Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, of those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes;
Josua, der Sohn von Nun, und Kaleb, der Sohn von Jefunne, zerrissen entsetzt ihre Gewänder
and they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, “The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land.
und riefen den Israeliten zu: »Das Land, das wir erkundet haben, ist wirklich sehr gut!
“If the LORD is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us — a land which flows with milk and honey.
Dort gibt es alles im Überfluss! Wenn der HERR Gefallen an uns hat, wird er uns dorthin bringen und uns das Land schenken.
“Only do not rebel against the LORD; and do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey. Their protection has been removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.”
Lehnt euch nur nicht gegen ihn auf! Ihr müsst keine Angst vor den Leuten dort haben. Wir werden sie leicht überwältigen, denn sie haben keinen Schutz mehr. Ihr braucht euch nicht vor ihnen zu fürchten, der HERR ist auf unserer Seite!«
But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Then the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting to all the sons of Israel.
Aber die Israeliten schrien: »Steinigt sie!« Da erschien der HERR in seiner Herrlichkeit am heiligen Zelt, so dass alle es sehen konnten.
Moses Pleads for the People
The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people spurn Me? And how long will they not believe in Me, despite all the signs which I have performed in their midst?
Er sprach zu Mose: »Dieses Volk hört nicht auf, mich zu beleidigen. Wie viele Wunder habe ich vor ihren Augen getan, und sie vertrauen mir immer noch nicht! Doch damit ist jetzt Schluss,
“I will smite them with pestilence and dispossess them, and I will make you into a nation greater and mightier than they.”
denn ich werde sie durch eine Seuche ausrotten. An ihrer Stelle will ich deine Nachkommen zu einem Volk machen, das größer und mächtiger ist als sie.«
But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for by Your strength You brought up this people from their midst,
Doch Mose wandte ein: »Wenn das geschieht, werden es die Ägypter erfahren. Sie haben erlebt, wie du unser Volk mit gewaltigen Taten aus ihrem Land befreit hast.
and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that You, O LORD, are in the midst of this people, for You, O LORD, are seen eye to eye, while Your cloud stands over them; and You go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.
Auch die Bewohner von Kanaan haben gehört, dass du, HERR, mitten unter uns bist und dich uns sogar zeigst. Sie wissen, dass deine Wolke über uns steht; bei Tag gehst du uns in der Wolkensäule voran und bei Nacht in der Feuersäule.
“Now if You slay this people as one man, then the nations who have heard of Your fame will say,
Wenn du nun ganz Israel auf einen Schlag tötest, dann werden alle diese Völker, die schon so viel von dir gehört haben, davon erfahren und sagen:
‘Because the LORD could not bring this people into the land which He promised them by oath, therefore He slaughtered them in the wilderness.’
›Der HERR konnte dieses Volk nicht in das Land bringen, das er ihnen mit einem Eid versprochen hat. Er hat sie in der Wüste abgeschlachtet.‹
“But now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared,
Darum bitte ich dich, Herr: Zeige deine Macht auf andere Weise. Du hast gesagt:
‘The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.’
›Meine Geduld ist groß, und meine Liebe kennt kein Ende. Ja, ich vergebe Schuld und Unrecht, doch ich lasse nicht alles ungestraft. Wenn jemand an seiner Schuld festhält, muss er die Folgen tragen, und nicht nur er, sondern auch seine Kinder, Enkel und Urenkel!‹
“Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
Herr, weil deine Liebe so groß ist, bitte ich dich: Vergib diesem Volk, wie du es auf dem ganzen Weg von Ägypten bis hierher immer wieder getan hast.«
The LORD Pardons and Rebukes
So the LORD said, “I have pardoned them according to your word;
Da antwortete der HERR: »Ich will dem Volk vergeben, weil du mich darum bittest.
but indeed, as I live, all the earth will be filled with the glory of the LORD.
Aber ich sage dir: So wahr ich lebe und so wahr die ganze Welt einmal von meiner Herrlichkeit erfüllt sein wird:
“Surely all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice,
Diese Leute hier werden das Land nicht sehen, das ich ihren Vorfahren versprochen habe. Keiner, der mich beleidigt hat, wird hineinkommen. Zehnmal haben sie mich nun schon herausgefordert. Obwohl sie meine Macht und die Wunder in Ägypten und hier in der Wüste mit eigenen Augen gesehen haben, wollen sie einfach nicht auf mich hören.
“But My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.
Ganz anders dagegen mein Diener Kaleb: Er ließ sich nicht beirren und ist mir immer treu gefolgt. Darum werde ich ihn in das Land bringen, das er bereits gesehen hat. Seine Nachkommen sollen es besitzen.
“Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; turn tomorrow and set out to the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”
Die Amalekiter und die Kanaaniter jedoch werden in der Ebene wohnen bleiben. Aber zuvor werdet ihr alle in die Wüste zurückkehren. Morgen sollt ihr wieder in Richtung Rotes Meer aufbrechen.«
“How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who are grumbling against Me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel, which they are making against Me.
»Ich habe gehört, was die Israeliten mir vorwerfen. Soll ich ihre Bosheit noch weiter dulden? Sie haben sich lange genug gegen mich aufgelehnt!
“Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the LORD, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will surely do to you;
Darum richtet ihnen aus: Ich habe genau gehört, was ihr gesagt habt. Ich schwöre, so wahr ich lebe, dass ich euren Wunsch erfüllen werde!
your corpses will fall in this wilderness, even all your numbered men, according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me.
Hier in der Wüste werdet ihr sterben, und zwar jeder wehrfähige Mann von 20 Jahren an aufwärts, der bei der Musterung erfasst worden ist. Weil ihr euch gegen mich aufgelehnt habt,
‘Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.
werdet ihr niemals in das Land kommen, das ich euch mit einem Eid versprochen habe. Nur Kaleb, den Sohn von Jefunne, und Josua, den Sohn von Nun,
‘Your children, however, whom you said would become a prey — I will bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected.
werde ich dorthin bringen, und auch eure Kinder, die ihr schon in der Gewalt eurer Feinde gesehen habt. Sie werden das Land kennen lernen, das ihr nicht haben wolltet.
‘But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness.
Aber eure Leichen werden in der Wüste verwesen.
‘Your sons shall be shepherds for forty years in the wilderness, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your corpses lie in the wilderness.
Eure Kinder sollen vierzig Jahre mit euch umherziehen, bis auch der Letzte von euch gestorben ist. So lange müssen sie mit darunter leiden, dass ihr mir untreu wart.
‘According to the number of days which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall bear your guilt a year, even forty years, and you will know My opposition.
Vierzig Tage lang habt ihr das Land erkundet — vierzig Jahre lang werdet ihr nicht hineinkommen. Für jeden Tag, den ihr dort unterwegs wart, werdet ihr ein Jahr lang die Folgen eurer Sünde tragen. Ihr sollt erleben, was es heißt, wenn ich mich abwende.
‘I, the LORD, have spoken, surely this I will do to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be destroyed, and there they will die.’”
Das verspreche ich, der HERR, und ich werde es auch tun. Ja, ich schwöre euch: Alle, die sich gegen mich verbündet haben, werden in der Wüste umkommen. Dieses ganze boshafte Volk wird hier sterben!«
As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land,
Die Männer aber, die Mose als Kundschafter losgeschickt hatte, ließ der HERR tot umfallen. Denn sie hatten die schlimmen Gerüchte über das Land verbreitet und das Volk in Aufruhr gebracht.
But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land.
Nur zwei von ihnen blieben am Leben: Josua, der Sohn von Nun, und Kaleb, der Sohn von Jefunne.
Israel Repulsed
When Moses spoke these words to all the sons of Israel, the people mourned greatly.
Als Mose den Israeliten Gottes Worte ausgerichtet hatte, fingen sie an zu weinen und zu klagen.
In the morning, however, they rose up early and went up to the ridge of the hill country, saying, “Here we are; we have indeed sinned, but we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised.”
Früh am nächsten Morgen machten sie sich bereit, ins nördliche Bergland vorzurücken. Sie sagten: »Wir wollen unseren Fehler wiedergutmachen! Wir gehorchen jetzt und ziehen hinauf in das Land, von dem der HERR gesprochen hat!«
But Moses said, “Why then are you transgressing the commandment of the LORD, when it will not succeed?
Aber Mose rief: »Warum widersetzt ihr euch schon wieder dem Befehl des HERRN? Das kann nicht gutgehen!
“Do not go up, or you will be struck down before your enemies, for the LORD is not among you.
Bleibt hier! Der HERR ist nicht bei euch, er schützt euch nicht vor euren Feinden.
“For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there in front of you, and you will fall by the sword, inasmuch as you have turned back from following the LORD. And the LORD will not be with you.”
Dort drüben erwarten euch die Amalekiter und Kanaaniter, und sie werden euch umbringen. Der HERR wird euch nicht beistehen, denn ihr habt euch von ihm abgewandt!«
But they went up heedlessly to the ridge of the hill country; neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses left the camp.
Doch die Israeliten hörten in ihrem Stolz nicht zu, sondern zogen ins Bergland hinauf. Mose ging nicht mit, und auch die Bundeslade des HERRN blieb unten im Lager.
