The Preaching of John the Baptist
Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said,
“THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
‘MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!’”

Er war es, von dem der Prophet Jesaja gesagt hat: Stimme eines Rufers in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn! Macht gerade seine Straßen!
Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Johannes trug ein Gewand aus Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Hüften; Heuschrecken und wilder Honig waren seine Nahrung.
Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan;

and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Als Johannes sah, dass viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer zur Taufe kamen, sagte er zu ihnen: Ihr Schlangenbrut, wer hat euch denn gelehrt, dass ihr dem kommenden Zorngericht entrinnen könnt?
and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father’; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.
und meint nicht, ihr könntet sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann aus diesen Steinen dem Abraham Kinder erwecken.
“The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Schon ist die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; jeder Baum, der keine gute Frucht hervorbringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.
“As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Ich taufe euch mit Wasser zur Umkehr. Der aber, der nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich und ich bin es nicht wert, ihm die Sandalen auszuziehen. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.
“His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Schon hält er die Schaufel in der Hand; und er wird seine Tenne reinigen und den Weizen in seine Scheune sammeln; die Spreu aber wird er in nie erlöschendem Feuer verbrennen.
The Baptism of Jesus
Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him.
Zu dieser Zeit kam Jesus von Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen.
But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”
Johannes aber wollte es nicht zulassen und sagte zu ihm: Ich müsste von dir getauft werden und du kommst zu mir?
But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.
Jesus antwortete ihm: Lass es nur zu! Denn so können wir die Gerechtigkeit ganz erfüllen. Da gab Johannes nach.
After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,
Als Jesus getauft war, stieg er sogleich aus dem Wasser herauf. Und siehe, da öffnete sich der Himmel und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube auf sich herabkommen.
