The Preaching of John the Baptist
Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said,
“THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS,
‘MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD,
MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!’”

Now John himself had a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Then Jerusalem was going out to him, and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan;

and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Als er aber sah, dass auch viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer kamen, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen, hielt er ihnen entgegen: »Ihr Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch auf den Gedanken gebracht, ihr könntet dem kommenden Gericht Gottes entrinnen?
“Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance;
Zeigt durch Taten, dass ihr wirklich zu Gott umkehren wollt!
and do not suppose that you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father’; for I say to you that from these stones God is able to raise up children to Abraham.
Bildet euch nur nicht ein, ihr könntet euch damit herausreden: ›Abraham ist unser Vater!‹ Ich sage euch: Gott kann selbst aus diesen Steinen hier Nachkommen für Abraham hervorbringen.
“The axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
Schon ist die Axt erhoben, um die Bäume an der Wurzel abzuschlagen. Jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.
“As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Wer umkehrt zu Gott, den taufe ich mit Wasser. Der aber, der nach mir kommen wird, ist viel mächtiger als ich. Ich bin nicht einmal würdig, ihm die Schuhe hinterherzutragen. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.
“His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Schon hat er die Schaufel in seiner Hand, mit der er die Spreu vom Weizen trennt. Seinen Weizen wird er in die Scheune bringen, die Spreu aber wird er in einem Feuer verbrennen, das nie verlöscht.«
The Baptism of Jesus
Then Jesus arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him.
Auch Jesus kam aus seiner Heimat in Galiläa an den Jordan, um sich von Johannes taufen zu lassen.
But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?”
Aber Johannes versuchte, ihn davon abzubringen: »Eigentlich müsste ich doch von dir getauft werden! Und nun kommst du zu mir?«
But Jesus answering said to him, “Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.
Jesus erwiderte: »Lass es jetzt so geschehen, denn wir müssen alles tun, was Gott will.« Da gab Johannes nach.
After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him,
Gleich nach der Taufe stieg Jesus wieder aus dem Wasser. In diesem Augenblick öffnete sich der Himmel über ihm, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube herabkommen und sich auf ihm niederlassen.
