The New Birth
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;
Unter den Pharisäern gab es einen Mann namens Nikodemus; er war ein Mitglied des Hohen Rates.
this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Eines Nachts kam er zu Jesus: »Rabbi«, sagte er, »wir wissen, dass Gott dich als Lehrer zu uns gesandt hat. Denn niemand kann die Wunder tun, die du vollbringst, wenn Gott sich nicht zu ihm stellt.«
Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Darauf erwiderte Jesus: »Ich versichere dir, Nikodemus: Wer nicht neu geboren wird, kann Gottes Reich nicht sehen und erleben.«
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”
Verständnislos fragte der Pharisäer: »Wie kann jemand neu geboren werden, wenn er schon alt ist? Er kann doch nicht wieder in den Mutterleib zurück und noch einmal auf die Welt kommen!«
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
»Ich versichere dir«, entgegnete Jesus, »nur wer durch Wasser und durch Gottes Geist neu geboren wird, kann in Gottes Reich kommen!
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Ein Mensch kann immer nur menschliches Leben hervorbringen. Wer aber durch Gottes Geist geboren wird, bekommt neues Leben.
“Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
Wundere dich deshalb nicht, dass ich dir gesagt habe: ›Ihr müsst neu geboren werden.‹
“The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Es ist damit wie beim Wind: Er weht, wo er will. Du hörst ihn, aber du kannst nicht erklären, woher er kommt und wohin er geht. So ist es auch mit der Geburt aus Gottes Geist.«
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?”
Nikodemus ließ nicht locker: »Aber wie soll das nur vor sich gehen?«
Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?
Jesus erwiderte: »Du bist ein anerkannter Gelehrter in Israel und verstehst das nicht?
“Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony.
Ja, ich versichere dir: Wir reden nur von dem, was wir genau kennen. Und was wir bezeugen, das haben wir auch gesehen. Trotzdem nehmt ihr unser Wort nicht an.
“If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
Ihr glaubt mir ja nicht einmal, wenn ich von irdischen Dingen rede! Wie also werdet ihr mir dann glauben, wenn ich von himmlischen Dingen spreche?
“No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.
Es ist noch nie jemand zum Himmel hinaufgestiegen außer dem Menschensohn, der vom Himmel herab auf die Erde gekommen ist.
“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;
Du weißt doch, wie Mose in der Wüste eine Schlange aus Bronze an einer Stange aufrichtete, damit jeder, der sie ansah, am Leben blieb. Genauso muss auch der Menschensohn erhöht werden,
so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
damit jeder, der glaubt, durch ihn das ewige Leben hat.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Denn Gott hat die Menschen so sehr geliebt, dass er seinen einzigen Sohn für sie hergab. Jeder, der an ihn glaubt, wird nicht zugrunde gehen, sondern das ewige Leben haben.
“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
Gott hat nämlich seinen Sohn nicht zu den Menschen gesandt, um über sie Gericht zu halten, sondern um sie zu retten.
“He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Wer an ihn glaubt, der wird nicht verurteilt. Wer aber nicht an ihn glaubt, über den ist das Urteil damit schon gesprochen. Denn er weigert sich, Gottes einzigem Sohn zu vertrauen.
“This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
Und so vollzieht sich das Urteil: Das Licht ist in die Welt gekommen, aber die Menschen liebten die Finsternis mehr als das Licht. Denn was sie taten, war böse.
“For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
Wer Böses tut, scheut das Licht und bleibt lieber im Dunkeln, damit niemand ihm seine Taten nachweisen kann.
“But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”
Wer aber die Wahrheit Gottes liebt und das tut, was er will, der tritt ins Licht! Dann zeigt sich: Gott selbst bestimmt das Handeln dieses Menschen.«
John’s Last Testimony
After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He was spending time with them and baptizing.
Danach kam Jesus mit seinen Jüngern in die Provinz Judäa. Er blieb einige Zeit mit ihnen dort und taufte.
John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people were coming and were being baptized —
Auch Johannes taufte bei Änon, in der Nähe von Salim, weil es dort genügend Wasser gab. Immer wieder kamen Menschen zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen.
Therefore there arose a discussion on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purification.
Eines Tages kam es zwischen einigen Jüngern von Johannes und einem Juden zum Streit darüber, welche Taufe wichtiger sei.
And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified, behold, He is baptizing and all are coming to Him.”
Gemeinsam gingen sie schließlich zu Johannes und berichteten ihm: »Rabbi, der Mann, der damals am anderen Jordanufer zu dir kam und auf den du die Menschen hingewiesen hast, der tauft jetzt selber. Alle Leute gehen zu ihm, anstatt zu uns zu kommen.«
John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.
Doch Johannes erwiderte: »Kein Mensch kann sich auch nur das Geringste selber nehmen; es muss ihm von Gott gegeben werden.
“You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent ahead of Him.’
Ihr selbst könnt doch bezeugen, dass ich gesagt habe: ›Ich bin nicht der Christus, der von Gott versprochene Retter. Ich soll ihn nur ankündigen, mehr nicht.‹
“He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. So this joy of mine has been made full.
Die Braut gehört schließlich zum Bräutigam! Der Freund des Bräutigams freut sich mit ihm, auch wenn er nur danebensteht. So geht es mir jetzt. Meine Freude könnte nicht größer sein.
“He must increase, but I must decrease.
Christus soll immer wichtiger werden, und ich will immer mehr in den Hintergrund treten.
“He who comes from above is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.
Er ist vom Himmel gekommen und steht deshalb über allen. Wir gehören zur Erde und haben hier unseren Ursprung. Darum können wir nur aus irdischer Sicht reden. Christus aber kommt vom Himmel
“What He has seen and heard, of that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.
und kann bezeugen, was er dort gesehen und gehört hat. Trotzdem glaubt ihm keiner!
“He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true.
Wer aber auf seine Botschaft hört, der bestätigt damit, dass Gott die Wahrheit sagt.
“For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.
Christus ist von Gott zu uns gesandt. Er redet Gottes Worte, denn Gott gibt ihm den Geist in seiner ganzen Fülle.
“The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.
Der Vater liebt den Sohn und hat alles seiner Macht unterstellt.
“He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
Wer an den Sohn Gottes glaubt, der hat das ewige Leben. Wer aber nicht auf ihn hört, wird nie zum Leben gelangen, sondern Gottes Zorn wird für immer auf ihm lasten.«
