After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias).

Danach ging Jesus an das andere Ufer des Sees von Galiläa, der auch See von Tiberias heißt.
A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick.
Eine große Menschenmenge folgte ihm, weil sie die Zeichen sahen, die er an den Kranken tat.
Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples.
Jesus stieg auf den Berg und setzte sich dort mit seinen Jüngern nieder.
Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?”
Als Jesus aufblickte und sah, dass so viele Menschen zu ihm kamen, fragte er Philippus: Wo sollen wir Brot kaufen, damit diese Leute zu essen haben?
This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do.
Das sagte er aber nur, um ihn auf die Probe zu stellen; denn er selbst wusste, was er tun wollte.
Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.”
Philippus antwortete ihm: Brot für zweihundert Denare reicht nicht aus, wenn jeder von ihnen auch nur ein kleines Stück bekommen soll.
One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,
Einer seiner Jünger, Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, sagte zu ihm:
“There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?”
Hier ist ein kleiner Junge, der hat fünf Gerstenbrote und zwei Fische; doch was ist das für so viele?
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
Jesus sagte: Lasst die Leute sich setzen! Es gab dort nämlich viel Gras. Da setzten sie sich; es waren etwa fünftausend Männer.
Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.
Dann nahm Jesus die Brote, sprach das Dankgebet und teilte an die Leute aus, so viel sie wollten; ebenso machte er es mit den Fischen.
When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.”
Als die Menge satt geworden war, sagte er zu seinen Jüngern: Sammelt die übrig gebliebenen Brocken, damit nichts verdirbt!
So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.
Sie sammelten und füllten zwölf Körbe mit den Brocken, die von den fünf Gerstenbroten nach dem Essen übrig waren.
Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
Als die Menschen das Zeichen sahen, das er getan hatte, sagten sie: Das ist wirklich der Prophet, der in die Welt kommen soll.
Jesus Walks on the Water
So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
Da erkannte Jesus, dass sie kommen würden, um ihn in ihre Gewalt zu bringen und zum König zu machen. Daher zog er sich wieder auf den Berg zurück, er allein.
Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,
Als es aber Abend geworden war, gingen seine Jünger zum See hinab,
and after getting into a boat, they started to cross the sea to Capernaum. It had already become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
bestiegen ein Boot und fuhren über den See, auf Kafarnaum zu. Es war schon dunkel geworden und Jesus war noch nicht zu ihnen gekommen.
The sea began to be stirred up because a strong wind was blowing.
Da wurde der See durch einen heftigen Sturm aufgewühlt.
Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened.
Als sie etwa fünfundzwanzig oder dreißig Stadien gefahren waren, sahen sie, wie Jesus über den See kam und sich dem Boot näherte; und sie fürchteten sich.
But He said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
Er aber rief ihnen zu: Ich bin es; fürchtet euch nicht!
So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
Sie wollten ihn zu sich in das Boot nehmen, aber schon war das Boot am Ufer, das sie erreichen wollten.
The next day the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone.
Am nächsten Tag stand die Menge am anderen Ufer des Sees; sie hatten gesehen, dass nur ein Boot dort gewesen war und dass Jesus nicht mit seinen Jüngern ins Boot gestiegen war, sondern dass seine Jünger allein abgefahren waren.
There came other small boats from Tiberias near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
Von Tiberias her kamen andere Boote in die Nähe des Ortes, wo sie nach dem Dankgebet des Herrn das Brot gegessen hatten.
So when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they themselves got into the small boats, and came to Capernaum seeking Jesus.
Als die Leute sahen, dass weder Jesus noch seine Jünger dort waren, stiegen sie in die Boote, fuhren nach Kafarnaum und suchten Jesus.
When they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”
Als sie ihn am anderen Ufer des Sees fanden, fragten sie ihn: Rabbi, wann bist du hierhergekommen?
Words to the People
Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
Jesus antwortete ihnen: Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Ihr sucht mich nicht, weil ihr Zeichen gesehen habt, sondern weil ihr von den Broten gegessen habt und satt geworden seid.
“Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”
Müht euch nicht ab für die Speise, die verdirbt, sondern für die Speise, die für das ewige Leben bleibt und die der Menschensohn euch geben wird! Denn ihn hat Gott, der Vater, mit seinem Siegel beglaubigt.
Therefore they said to Him, “What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?”
Da fragten sie ihn: Was müssen wir tun, um die Werke Gottes zu vollbringen?
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
Jesus antwortete ihnen: Das ist das Werk Gottes, dass ihr an den glaubt, den er gesandt hat.
So they said to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform?
Sie sagten zu ihm: Welches Zeichen tust du denn, damit wir es sehen und dir glauben? Was für ein Werk tust du?
“Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.’”
Unsere Väter haben das Manna in der Wüste gegessen, wie es in der Schrift heißt: Brot vom Himmel gab er ihnen zu essen.
Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven.
Jesus sagte zu ihnen: Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Nicht Mose hat euch das Brot vom Himmel gegeben, sondern mein Vater gibt euch das wahre Brot vom Himmel.
“For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.”
Denn das Brot, das Gott gibt, kommt vom Himmel herab und gibt der Welt das Leben.
Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
Da baten sie ihn: Herr, gib uns immer dieses Brot!
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
Jesus antwortete ihnen: Ich bin das Brot des Lebens; wer zu mir kommt, wird nie mehr hungern, und wer an mich glaubt, wird nie mehr Durst haben.
“But I said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.
Aber ich habe euch gesagt: Ihr habt gesehen und doch glaubt ihr nicht.
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out.
Alles, was der Vater mir gibt, wird zu mir kommen, und wer zu mir kommt, den werde ich nicht abweisen;
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
denn ich bin nicht vom Himmel herabgekommen, um meinen Willen zu tun, sondern den Willen dessen, der mich gesandt hat.
“This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
Das aber ist der Wille dessen, der mich gesandt hat, dass ich keinen von denen, die er mir gegeben hat, zugrunde gehen lasse, sondern dass ich sie auferwecke am Jüngsten Tag.
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
Denn das ist der Wille meines Vaters, dass jeder, der den Sohn sieht und an ihn glaubt, das ewige Leben hat und dass ich ihn auferwecke am Jüngsten Tag.
Words to the Jews
Therefore the Jews were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that came down out of heaven.”
Da murrten die Juden gegen ihn, weil er gesagt hatte: Ich bin das Brot, das vom Himmel herabgekommen ist.
They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”
Und sie sagten: Ist das nicht Jesus, der Sohn Josefs, dessen Vater und Mutter wir kennen? Wie kann er jetzt sagen: Ich bin vom Himmel herabgekommen?
Jesus answered and said to them, “Do not grumble among yourselves.
Jesus sagte zu ihnen: Murrt nicht!
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
Niemand kann zu mir kommen, wenn nicht der Vater, der mich gesandt hat, ihn zieht; und ich werde ihn auferwecken am Jüngsten Tag.
“It is written in the prophets, ‘AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.
Bei den Propheten steht geschrieben: Und alle werden Schüler Gottes sein. Jeder, der auf den Vater hört und seine Lehre annimmt, wird zu mir kommen.
“Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father.
Niemand hat den Vater gesehen außer dem, der von Gott ist; nur er hat den Vater gesehen.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.
Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Wer glaubt, hat das ewige Leben.
“Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.
Eure Väter haben in der Wüste das Manna gegessen und sind gestorben.
“This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.
So aber ist es mit dem Brot, das vom Himmel herabkommt: Wenn jemand davon isst, wird er nicht sterben.
“I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”
Ich bin das lebendige Brot, das vom Himmel herabgekommen ist. Wer von diesem Brot isst, wird in Ewigkeit leben. Das Brot, das ich geben werde, ist mein Fleisch für das Leben der Welt.
Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”
Da stritten sich die Juden und sagten: Wie kann er uns sein Fleisch zu essen geben?
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.
Jesus sagte zu ihnen: Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Wenn ihr das Fleisch des Menschensohnes nicht esst und sein Blut nicht trinkt, habt ihr das Leben nicht in euch.
“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, hat das ewige Leben und ich werde ihn auferwecken am Jüngsten Tag.
“For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.
Denn mein Fleisch ist wahrhaft eine Speise und mein Blut ist wahrhaft ein Trank.
“He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.
Wer mein Fleisch isst und mein Blut trinkt, der bleibt in mir und ich bleibe in ihm.
“As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.
Wie mich der lebendige Vater gesandt hat und wie ich durch den Vater lebe, so wird jeder, der mich isst, durch mich leben.
“This is the bread which came down out of heaven; not as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live forever.”
Dies ist das Brot, das vom Himmel herabgekommen ist. Es ist nicht wie das Brot, das die Väter gegessen haben, sie sind gestorben. Wer aber dieses Brot isst, wird leben in Ewigkeit.
Words to the Disciples
These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.
Diese Worte sprach Jesus, als er in der Synagoge von Kafarnaum lehrte.
Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this said, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?”
Viele seiner Jünger, die ihm zuhörten, sagten: Diese Rede ist hart. Wer kann sie hören?
But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?
Jesus erkannte, dass seine Jünger darüber murrten, und fragte sie: Daran nehmt ihr Anstoß?
“What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?
Was werdet ihr sagen, wenn ihr den Menschensohn aufsteigen seht, dorthin, wo er vorher war?
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
Der Geist ist es, der lebendig macht; das Fleisch nützt nichts. Die Worte, die ich zu euch gesprochen habe, sind Geist und sind Leben.
“But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him.
Aber es gibt unter euch einige, die nicht glauben. Jesus wusste nämlich von Anfang an, welche es waren, die nicht glaubten, und wer ihn ausliefern würde.
And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.”
Und er sagte: Deshalb habe ich zu euch gesagt: Niemand kann zu mir kommen, wenn es ihm nicht vom Vater gegeben ist.
Peter’s Confession of Faith
As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.
Daraufhin zogen sich viele seiner Jünger zurück und gingen nicht mehr mit ihm umher.
So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to go away also, do you?”
Da fragte Jesus die Zwölf: Wollt auch ihr weggehen?
Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
Simon Petrus antwortete ihm: Herr, zu wem sollen wir gehen? Du hast Worte des ewigen Lebens.
“We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
Wir sind zum Glauben gekommen und haben erkannt: Du bist der Heilige Gottes.
Jesus answered them, “Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?”
Jesus erwiderte: Habe ich nicht euch, die Zwölf, erwählt? Und doch ist einer von euch ein Teufel.
