Paul before the Council

The high priest Ananias commanded those standing beside him to strike him on the mouth.
Der Hohepriester Hananias aber befahl denen, die bei ihm standen, ihn auf den Mund zu schlagen.
Then Paul said to him, “God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to try me according to the Law, and in violation of the Law order me to be struck?”
Da sagte Paulus zu ihm: Dich wird Gott schlagen, du getünchte Wand! Du sitzt hier, um mich nach dem Gesetz zu richten, und entgegen dem Gesetz befiehlst du, mich zu schlagen?
But the bystanders said, “Do you revile God’s high priest?”
Die Umstehenden sagten: Du wagst es, den Hohepriester Gottes zu schmähen?
And Paul said, “I was not aware, brethren, that he was high priest; for it is written, ‘YOU SHALL NOT SPEAK EVIL OF A RULER OF YOUR PEOPLE.’”
Paulus antwortete: Ich wusste nicht, Brüder, dass er der Hohepriester ist. Denn es heißt in der Schrift: Einen Fürsten deines Volkes sollst du nicht verfluchen.
But perceiving that one group were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, Paul began crying out in the Council, “Brethren, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; I am on trial for the hope and resurrection of the dead!”
Da Paulus aber wusste, dass der eine Teil zu den Sadduzäern, der andere zu den Pharisäern gehörte, rief er vor dem Hohen Rat aus: Brüder, ich bin Pharisäer und ein Sohn von Pharisäern; wegen der Hoffnung und wegen der Auferstehung der Toten stehe ich vor Gericht.
As he said this, there occurred a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
Als er das sagte, brach ein Streit zwischen den Pharisäern und den Sadduzäern aus und die Versammlung spaltete sich.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.
Die Sadduzäer behaupten nämlich, es gebe weder Auferstehung noch Engel noch Geist, die Pharisäer dagegen bekennen sich zu alldem.
And there occurred a great uproar; and some of the scribes of the Pharisaic party stood up and began to argue heatedly, saying, “We find nothing wrong with this man; suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
Es erhob sich ein lautes Geschrei und einige Schriftgelehrte aus dem Kreis der Pharisäer standen auf und verfochten ihre Ansicht. Sie sagten: Wir finden nichts Schlimmes an diesem Menschen. Vielleicht hat doch ein Geist oder ein Engel zu ihm gesprochen.
And as a great dissension was developing, the commander was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them and ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force, and bring him into the barracks.
Als aber der Streit heftig wurde, befürchtete der Oberst, sie könnten Paulus zerreißen. Daher ließ er die Wachtruppe herabkommen, ihn mit Gewalt aus ihrer Mitte herausholen und in die Kaserne bringen.
But on the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, “Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also.”
In der folgenden Nacht aber trat der Herr zu Paulus und sagte: Hab Mut! Denn so wie du in Jerusalem meine Sache bezeugt hast, sollst du auch in Rom Zeugnis ablegen.
A Conspiracy to Kill Paul
When it was day, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves under an oath, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
Nach Tagesanbruch rotteten sich die Juden zusammen und verschworen sich, weder zu essen noch zu trinken, bis sie Paulus getötet hätten.
There were more than forty who formed this plot.
An dieser Verschwörung waren mehr als vierzig Männer beteiligt.
They came to the chief priests and the elders and said, “We have bound ourselves under a solemn oath to taste nothing until we have killed Paul.
Sie gingen zu den Hohepriestern und den Ältesten und sagten: Wir haben mit einem heiligen Eid geschworen, nichts zu essen, bis wir Paulus getötet haben.
“Now therefore, you and the Council notify the commander to bring him down to you, as though you were going to determine his case by a more thorough investigation; and we for our part are ready to slay him before he comes near the place.”
Geht also jetzt zusammen mit dem Hohen Rat zum Obersten und bittet ihn, Paulus zu euch herunterzuführen, da ihr den Fall noch genauer untersuchen wollt; wir aber halten uns bereit, um ihn, noch bevor er hierherkommt, umzubringen.
But the son of Paul’s sister heard of their ambush, and he came and entered the barracks and told Paul.
Der Sohn der Schwester des Paulus erfuhr jedoch von dem Anschlag. Er ging in die Kaserne und verständigte Paulus.
Paul called one of the centurions to him and said, “Lead this young man to the commander, for he has something to report to him.”
Paulus ließ einen der Hauptleute rufen und sagte: Bring diesen jungen Mann zum Obersten, denn er hat ihm etwas zu melden!
So he took him and led him to the commander and said, “Paul the prisoner called me to him and asked me to lead this young man to you since he has something to tell you.”
Der nahm ihn mit sich, brachte ihn zum Obersten und sagte: Der Gefangene Paulus hat mich gerufen und gebeten, diesen jungen Mann zu dir zu führen, da er dir etwas mitzuteilen habe.
The commander took him by the hand and stepping aside, began to inquire of him privately, “What is it that you have to report to me?”
Der Oberst fasste ihn bei der Hand, nahm ihn beiseite und fragte: Was hast du mir zu melden?
And he said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down tomorrow to the Council, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more thoroughly about him.
Er antwortete: Die Juden haben verabredet, dich zu bitten, du mögest morgen den Paulus vor den Hohen Rat hinunterführen lassen. Angeblich wollen sie Genaueres über ihn erfahren.
“So do not listen to them, for more than forty of them are lying in wait for him who have bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they slay him; and now they are ready and waiting for the promise from you.”
Lass du dich nicht von ihnen überreden! Denn mehr als vierzig Männer von ihnen lauern ihm auf. Sie haben sich geschworen, weder zu essen noch zu trinken, bis sie ihn umgebracht haben; schon stehen sie bereit und warten auf deine Anordnung.
So the commander let the young man go, instructing him, “Tell no one that you have notified me of these things.”
Der Oberst befahl dem jungen Mann: Sag niemandem etwas darüber, dass du mir das angezeigt hast! Dann ließ er ihn gehen.
Paul Moved to Caesarea
And he called to him two of the centurions and said, “Get two hundred soldiers ready by the third hour of the night to proceed to Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen.”
Er rief zwei von den Hauptleuten und gab ihnen den Befehl: Haltet von der dritten Stunde der Nacht an zweihundert Soldaten zum Marsch nach Cäsarea bereit, außerdem siebzig Reiter und zweihundert Leichtbewaffnete;
They were also to provide mounts to put Paul on and bring him safely to Felix the governor.
auch Tragtiere soll man bereitstellen, Paulus aufsitzen lassen und sicher zum Statthalter Felix bringen.
“Claudius Lysias, to the most excellent governor Felix, greetings.
Claudius Lysias entbietet dem erlauchten Statthalter Felix seinen Gruß!
“When this man was arrested by the Jews and was about to be slain by them, I came up to them with the troops and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman.
Dieser Mann wurde von den Juden ergriffen und wäre beinahe von ihnen umgebracht worden. Ich habe mit der Wachtruppe eingegriffen und ihn herausgeholt. Ich hatte nämlich erfahren, dass er Römer ist.
“And wanting to ascertain the charge for which they were accusing him, I brought him down to their Council;
Und weil ich ermitteln wollte, wessen sie ihn beschuldigen, brachte ich ihn vor ihren Hohen Rat.
and I found him to be accused over questions about their Law, but under no accusation deserving death or imprisonment.
Ich fand heraus, dass er wegen Streitfragen über ihr Gesetz angeschuldigt wird, dass aber keine Anklage gegen ihn vorliegt, die Tod oder Haft verdient.
“When I was informed that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once, also instructing his accusers to bring charges against him before you.”
Da mir aber angezeigt wurde, gegen den Mann sei ein Anschlag geplant, schicke ich ihn sogleich zu dir; auch habe ich die Kläger angewiesen, ihre Sache gegen ihn bei dir vorzubringen.
