Justification by Faith Evidenced in Old Testament
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?
Was sollen wir nun von Abraham sagen, was hat er erlangt, unser leiblicher Stammvater?
For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
Wenn Abraham aufgrund von Werken Gerechtigkeit erlangt hat, dann hat er zwar Ruhm, aber nicht vor Gott.
For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Denn was sagt die Schrift? Abraham glaubte Gott und das wurde ihm als Gerechtigkeit angerechnet.
Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.
Dem, der Werke tut, wird der Lohn nicht aus Gnade angerechnet, sondern weil er ihm zusteht.
But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,
Dem aber, der keine Werke tut, sondern an den glaubt, der den Gottlosen gerecht macht, dem wird sein Glaube als Gerechtigkeit angerechnet.
just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
So preist auch David den Menschen selig, dem Gott Gerechtigkeit unabhängig von Werken anrechnet:
“BLESSED ARE THOSE WHOSE LAWLESS DEEDS HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN,
AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.
AND WHOSE SINS HAVE BEEN COVERED.
Selig sind die, deren Frevel vergeben und deren Sünden be- deckt sind.
“BLESSED IS THE MAN WHOSE SIN THE LORD WILL NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.”
Selig ist der Mensch, dem der Herr die Sünde nicht anrechnet.
Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, “FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Gilt nun diese Seligpreisung nur den Beschnittenen oder auch den Unbeschnittenen? Wir sagen ja: Abraham wurde der Glaube als Gerechtigkeit angerechnet.
How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
Wie wurde er aber angerechnet: als er beschnitten oder als er unbeschnitten war? Nicht als er beschnitten, sondern als er noch unbeschnitten war.
and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
Und das Zeichen der Beschneidung empfing er zur Besiegelung der Glaubensgerechtigkeit, die ihm als Unbeschnittenem zuteilwurde; also ist er der Vater aller, die als Unbeschnittene glauben, sodass ihnen die Gerechtigkeit angerechnet wird,
and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised.
und er ist der Vater jener Beschnittenen, die nicht nur beschnitten sind, sondern auch den Spuren des Glaubens folgen, des Glaubens, den unser Vater Abraham schon vor seiner Beschneidung hatte.
For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Denn Abraham und seine Nachkommen erhielten nicht aufgrund des Gesetzes die Verheißung, Erben der Welt zu sein, sondern aufgrund der Glaubensgerechtigkeit.
For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified;
Wenn nämlich jene Erben sind, die aus dem Gesetz leben, dann ist der Glaube entleert und die Verheißung außer Kraft gesetzt.
for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.
Denn das Gesetz bewirkt Zorn; wo aber kein Gesetz ist, da ist auch keine Übertretung.
For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
Deshalb gilt: aus Glauben, damit auch gilt: aus Gnade. Nur so bleibt die Verheißung für die ganze Nachkommenschaft gültig, nicht nur für die, welche aus dem Gesetz, sondern auch für die, welche aus dem Glauben Abrahams leben. Er ist unser aller Vater,
(as it is written, “A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist.
wie geschrieben steht: Ich habe dich zum Vater vieler Völker bestimmt — im Angesicht des Gottes, dem er geglaubt hat, des Gottes, der die Toten lebendig macht und das, was nicht ist, ins Dasein ruft.
In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE.”
Gegen alle Hoffnung hat er voll Hoffnung geglaubt, dass er der Vater vieler Völker werde, nach dem Wort: So zahlreich werden deine Nachkommen sein.
Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb;
Ohne im Glauben schwach zu werden, bedachte er, der fast Hundertjährige, dass sein Leib und auch Saras Mutterschoß schon erstorben waren.
yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,
Er zweifelte aber nicht im Unglauben an der Verheißung Gottes, sondern wurde stark im Glauben, indem er Gott die Ehre erwies,
and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.
fest davon überzeugt, dass Gott die Macht besitzt, auch zu tun, was er verheißen hat.
Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Darum wurde es ihm auch als Gerechtigkeit angerechnet.
Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him,
Doch nicht allein um seinetwillen steht geschrieben: Es wurde ihm angerechnet,
but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
sondern auch um unseretwillen, denen es angerechnet werden soll, uns, die wir an den glauben, der Jesus, unseren Herrn, von den Toten auferweckt hat.
