Avoid Israel’s Mistakes
For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;

und alle auf Mose getauft wurden in der Wolke und im Meer.
and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
und alle tranken den gleichen geistgeschenkten Trank; denn sie tranken aus dem geistgeschenkten Felsen, der mit ihnen zog. Und dieser Fels war Christus.
Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.
Gott aber hatte an den meisten von ihnen kein Gefallen; denn er ließ sie in der Wüste umkommen.
Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.
Das aber geschah als warnendes Beispiel für uns: damit wir uns nicht von der Gier nach dem Bösen beherrschen lassen, wie jene sich von der Gier beherrschen ließen.
Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY.”
Werdet nicht Götzendiener wie einige von ihnen; denn es steht in der Schrift: Das Volk setzte sich zum Essen und Trinken; dann standen sie auf, um sich zu vergnügen.
Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.
Lasst uns nicht Unzucht treiben, wie einige von ihnen Unzucht trieben! Damals kamen an einem einzigen Tag dreiundzwanzigtausend Menschen um.

Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
Das aber geschah an ihnen, damit es uns als Beispiel dient; uns zur Warnung wurde es aufgeschrieben, uns, die das Ende der Zeiten erreicht hat.
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
Wer also zu stehen meint, der gebe Acht, dass er nicht fällt.
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
Noch ist keine Versuchung über euch gekommen, die den Menschen überfordert. Gott ist treu; er wird nicht zulassen, dass ihr über eure Kraft hinaus versucht werdet. Er wird euch mit der Versuchung auch einen Ausweg schaffen, sodass ihr sie bestehen könnt.
I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.
Ich rede doch zu verständigen Menschen; urteilt selbst über das, was ich sage!
Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?
Ist der Kelch des Segens, über den wir den Segen sprechen, nicht Teilhabe am Blut Christi? Ist das Brot, das wir brechen, nicht Teilhabe am Leib Christi?
Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.
Ein Brot ist es. Darum sind wir viele ein Leib; denn wir alle haben teil an dem einen Brot.
Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar?
Schaut auf das irdische Israel: Haben die, welche von den Opfern essen, nicht teil am Altar?
What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
Was meine ich damit? Dass Götzenopferfleisch wirklich etwas ist? Oder dass ein Götze wirklich etwas ist?
No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.
Nein, aber was man dort opfert, opfert man den Dämonen und nicht Gott. Ich will jedoch nicht, dass ihr Gemeinschaft mit Dämonen habt.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
Ihr könnt nicht den Kelch des Herrn trinken und den Kelch der Dämonen. Ihr könnt nicht teilhaben am Tisch des Herrn und am Tisch der Dämonen.
Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we?
Oder wollen wir die Eifersucht des Herrn wecken? Sind wir stärker als er?
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.
Alles ist erlaubt — aber nicht alles nützt. Alles ist erlaubt — aber nicht alles baut auf.
Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.
Denkt dabei nicht an euch selbst, sondern an die anderen!
Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake;
Alles, was auf dem Fleischmarkt verkauft wird, das esst, ohne aus Gewissensgründen nachzuforschen.
FOR THE EARTH IS THE LORD’S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS.
Denn dem Herrn gehört die Erde und was sie erfüllt.
If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience’ sake.
Wenn ein Ungläubiger euch einlädt und ihr hingehen möchtet, dann esst, was euch vorgesetzt wird, ohne aus Gewissensgründen nachzuforschen!
But if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake;
Wenn euch aber jemand darauf hinweist: Das ist Opferfleisch!, dann esst nicht davon mit Rücksicht auf den, der euch aufmerksam gemacht hat, und auf das Gewissen;
I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?
ich meine aber nicht das eigene Gewissen, sondern das des anderen; denn warum soll meine Freiheit vom Gewissen eines anderen abhängig sein?
If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks?
Wenn ich in Dankbarkeit mitesse, soll ich dann getadelt werden, dass ich etwas esse, wofür ich Dank sage?
Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Ob ihr also esst oder trinkt oder etwas anderes tut: Tut alles zur Verherrlichung Gottes!
Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God;
Gebt weder Juden noch Griechen, noch der Kirche Gottes Anlass zu einem Vorwurf!
