Samson Burns Philistine Crops

Einige Zeit später, als man gerade den Weizen erntete, wollte Simson seine Frau besuchen. Als Geschenk hatte er ihr einen jungen Ziegenbock mitgebracht. Er bat ihren Vater: »Lass mich zu meiner Frau ins Zimmer!« Doch der Vater verweigerte es ihm:
Her father said, “I really thought that you hated her intensely; so I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please let her be yours instead.”
»Das geht nicht! Ich habe sie dem Brautführer zur Frau gegeben. Glaub mir, ich habe wirklich gedacht, dass sie dir nichts mehr bedeutet. Heirate doch ihre jüngere Schwester! Sie ist sogar noch schöner!«
Samson then said to them, “This time I shall be blameless in regard to the Philistines when I do them harm.”
»Das werde ich euch Philistern heimzahlen!«, rief Simson. »Und diesmal bin ich wirklich im Recht!«
Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned the foxes tail to tail and put one torch in the middle between two tails.
Er zog los, fing dreihundert Füchse, band sie paarweise an den Schwänzen zusammen und befestigte Fackeln daran.
When he had set fire to the torches, he released the foxes into the standing grain of the Philistines, thus burning up both the shocks and the standing grain, along with the vineyards and groves.
Dann zündete er die Fackeln an und jagte die Tiere in die Felder der Philister. Sie setzten das Getreide auf den Äckern, die Garbenhaufen, die Weinberge und die Olivengärten in Brand.
Then the Philistines said, “Who did this?” And they said, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he took his wife and gave her to his companion.” So the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire.
Die Philister fragten: »Wer hat das getan?« Und bald fand man heraus: »Es war Simson! Sein Schwiegervater in Timna hat ihm die Frau weggenommen und sie seinem Brautführer gegeben.« Die Philister zogen nach Timna und verbrannten die Frau und ihren Vater.
Samson said to them, “Since you act like this, I will surely take revenge on you, but after that I will quit.”
Da ging Simson zu ihnen und rief: »Was habt ihr getan! Das schreit nach Rache! Jetzt werde ich euch nicht mehr verschonen!«
He struck them ruthlessly with a great slaughter; and he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam.
Er schlug auf die Philister ein, bis sie alle am Boden lagen. Dann ging er zum Berg Etam und lebte dort eine Zeit lang in einer Höhle im Felsen.
Then the Philistines went up and camped in Judah, and spread out in Lehi.
Die Philister marschierten mit ihrem Heer ins Stammesgebiet von Juda ein und schlugen ihr Lager bei Lehi auf.
The men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?” And they said, “We have come up to bind Samson in order to do to him as he did to us.”
Die Bewohner von Juda fragten: »Warum zieht ihr gegen uns in den Krieg?« »Wir wollen Simson gefangen nehmen«, erwiderten die Philister. »Wir haben mit ihm eine Rechnung zu begleichen.«
Then 3,000 men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?” And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”
Da gingen dreitausend Judäer zu der Höhle am Berg Etam und stellten Simson zur Rede: »Warum hast du uns das angetan? Du weißt doch, dass die Philister uns beherrschen!« »Ich habe ihnen nur mit gleicher Münze heimgezahlt, was sie mir angetan haben«, antwortete er.
They said to him, “We have come down to bind you so that we may give you into the hands of the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not kill me.”
Die Männer von Juda erwiderten: »Wir sind hergekommen, um dich zu fesseln und den Philistern auszuliefern.« »Schwört mir, dass ihr mich nicht umbringt!«, bat Simson.
So they said to him, “No, but we will bind you fast and give you into their hands; yet surely we will not kill you.” Then they bound him with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock.
Sie versprachen: »Wir wollen dich wirklich nur fesseln und ausliefern. Auf keinen Fall werden wir dich töten!« Nun ließ er sich von ihnen mit zwei neuen Stricken binden, aus der Höhle herausführen und nach Lehi bringen.
When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him. And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily so that the ropes that were on his arms were as flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds dropped from his hands.
Als die Philister Simson sahen, stimmten sie ein Triumphgeschrei an. Da wurde er vom Geist des HERRN ergriffen. Er zerriss die Stricke an seinen Armen, als wären sie angesengte Bindfäden.
He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he reached out and took it and killed a thousand men with it.
Dann entdeckte er den Unterkieferknochen eines Esels, packte ihn und erschlug damit tausend Philister.
Then Samson said,
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
Heaps upon heaps,
With the jawbone of a donkey
I have killed a thousand men.”
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
Heaps upon heaps,
With the jawbone of a donkey
I have killed a thousand men.”
»Mit dem Kiefer des Esels mähte ich sie nieder!«, rief er. »Mit dem Kiefer des Esels schlug ich tausend Mann!«
When he had finished speaking, he threw the jawbone from his hand; and he named that place Ramath-lehi.
Danach warf er den Knochen weg. Seither heißt der Ort, an dem dies geschehen ist, Ramat-Lehi (»Kinnbacken-Höhe«).
Then he became very thirsty, and he called to the LORD and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant, and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”
Simson hatte großen Durst. Er betete zum HERRN: »Ich habe für dich gekämpft, und du hast mir diesen großen Sieg geschenkt! Aber jetzt muss ich verdursten und werde doch noch diesen unbeschnittenen Heiden in die Hände fallen!«
But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi so that water came out of it. When he drank, his strength returned and he revived. Therefore he named it En-hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day.
Da ließ Gott aus einer Bodensenke in der Nähe von Lehi Wasser hervorbrechen. Simson trank davon und kam wieder zu Kräften. Man nennt die Quelle daher En-Hakore (»Quelle des Rufenden«); sie ist noch heute dort.
