Danites Seek Territory
In those days there was no king of Israel; and in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking an inheritance for themselves to live in, for until that day an inheritance had not been allotted to them as a possession among the tribes of Israel.

In jenen Tagen gab es keinen König in Israel. Und in jenen Tagen war der Stamm der Daniter dabei, sich einen Erbbesitz zu suchen, um sich niederzulassen; denn es war ihm inmitten der Stämme Israels bis zu jener Zeit noch kein Erbbesitz zugefallen.
So the sons of Dan sent from their family five men out of their whole number, valiant men from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to search it; and they said to them, “Go, search the land.” And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.
Die Daniter schickten aus ihrer gesamten Sippe fünf kampferprobte Männer aus Zora und Eschtaol aus, um das Land zu durchstreifen und zu erkunden. Sie sagten zu ihnen: Geht, erkundet das Land! Die Männer kamen ins Gebirge Efraim zum Haus Michas und übernachteten dort.
When they were near the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young man, the Levite; and they turned aside there and said to him, “Who brought you here? And what are you doing in this place? And what do you have here?”
Als sie beim Haus Michas waren, erkannten sie die Stimme des jungen Leviten. Sie gingen zu ihm hin und fragten ihn: Wer hat dich hierher gebracht? Was willst du hier und was tust du hier?
He said to them, “Thus and so has Micah done to me, and he has hired me and I have become his priest.”
Er antwortete ihnen: Das und das hat Micha mit mir gemacht; er hat mich angestellt und so wurde ich sein Priester.
They said to him, “Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether our way on which we are going will be prosperous.”
Sie sagten zu ihm: Befrag doch Gott für uns, damit wir erfahren, ob unser Weg, auf dem wir gehen, zum Erfolg führt!
The priest said to them, “Go in peace; your way in which you are going has the LORD’S approval.”
Der Priester erwiderte ihnen: Zieht in Frieden weiter! Der Weg, den ihr gehen wollt, liegt vor dem HERRN.
Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were in it living in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was no ruler humiliating them for anything in the land, and they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.
Die fünf Männer zogen weiter und kamen nach Lajisch. Sie sahen, dass das Volk dort ungestört nach Art der Sidonier lebte, ruhig und sicher. Es gab niemand, der Schaden anrichtete im Land, keinen Eroberer und keine Unterdrückung. Sie waren weit entfernt von den Sidoniern und lebten zurückgezogen von den Menschen.
When they came back to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them, “What do you report?”
Als die Männer zu ihren Brüdern nach Zora und Eschtaol kamen, sagten ihre Brüder zu ihnen: Wie ist es euch ergangen?
They said, “Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you sit still? Do not delay to go, to enter, to possess the land.
Sie antworteten: Auf, ziehen wir hinauf gegen sie! Denn wir haben gesehen, dass das Land sehr gut ist. Und da zaudert ihr? Zögert nicht! Macht euch auf den Weg dorthin und nehmt das Land in Besitz!
“When you enter, you will come to a secure people with a spacious land; for God has given it into your hand, a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth.”
Ihr findet ein sorgloses Volk vor, wenn ihr hinkommt. Das Land ist nach allen Seiten hin weiträumig. Wahrhaftig, Gott hat es in eure Hand gegeben. Es ist ein Ort, wo es an nichts fehlt, was es auf Erden gibt.
Then from the family of the Danites, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, six hundred men armed with weapons of war set out.
Darauf brachen von dort, also von Zora und Eschtaol aus, sechshundert mit Waffen ausgerüstete Männer aus der Sippe der Daniter auf.
They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. Therefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim.
Sie zogen hinauf und schlugen bei Kirjat-Jearim in Juda ihr Lager auf; deshalb nennt man diesen Ort bis auf den heutigen Tag Lager Dans; es liegt hinter Kirjat-Jearim.
They passed from there to the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah.
Von dort zogen sie hinüber ins Gebirge Efraim und kamen zum Haus Michas.
Danites Take Micah’s Idols
Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish said to their kinsmen, “Do you know that there are in these houses an ephod and household idols and a graven image and a molten image? Now therefore, consider what you should do.”
Da sagten die fünf Männer, die unterwegs gewesen waren, um das Land Lajisch zu erkunden, zu ihren Brüdern: Wisst ihr auch, dass es in diesen Häusern ein Efod und Terafim sowie ein Schnitzbild und ein Gussbild gibt? Überlegt also, was ihr tun wollt!
They turned aside there and came to the house of the young man, the Levite, to the house of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.
Da bogen sie dorthin ab und gingen zum Haus des jungen Leviten, zum Haus Michas, und fragten ihn nach seinem Befinden.
The six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the sons of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate.
Sechshundert mit Waffen ausgerüstete Daniter blieben am Hoftor stehen,
Now the five men who went to spy out the land went up and entered there, and took the graven image and the ephod and household idols and the molten image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.
während die fünf Männer, die unterwegs gewesen waren, um das Land zu erkunden, hineingingen. Sie nahmen das Schnitzbild und das Efod und die Terafim und das Gussbild, während der Priester am Eingang des Tores bei den sechshundert mit Waffen ausgerüsteten Männern stand.
When these went into Micah’s house and took the graven image, the ephod and household idols and the molten image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
Als die Leute in das Haus Michas eindrangen und das Schnitzbild und das Efod und die Terafim und das Gussbild nahmen, fragte sie der Priester: Was macht ihr da?
They said to him, “Be silent, put your hand over your mouth and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?”
Sie antworteten ihm: Schweig! Leg deine Hand auf deinen Mund! Geh mit uns und werde uns Vater und Priester! Was ist besser — wenn du Priester im Haus eines einzigen Mannes bist oder wenn du Priester für einen Stamm und eine Sippe in Israel bist?
The priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod and household idols and the graven image and went among the people.
Da wurde der Priester froh in seinem Herzen. Er nahm das Efod, die Terafim und das Schnitzbild und begab sich damit unter die Leute.
Then they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the livestock and the valuables in front of them.
Sie wandten sich um und zogen weiter. Die Kinder, das Vieh und die Habe führten sie an der Spitze des Zuges mit sich.
When they had gone some distance from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house assembled and overtook the sons of Dan.
Als sie schon weit weg vom Haus Michas waren, wurden die Männer in den Häusern, die in der Nähe von Michas Haus lagen, aufgeboten und sie holten die Daniter ein.
They cried to the sons of Dan, who turned around and said to Micah, “What is the matter with you, that you have assembled together?”
Sie riefen hinter den Danitern her, diese aber wandten sich um und sagten zu Micha: Was ist los? Warum habt ihr euch zusammengetan?
He said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away, and what do I have besides? So how can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
Er antwortete: Ihr habt meinen Gott, den ich mir gemacht hatte, und auch den Priester weggenommen und seid davongezogen. Was habe ich jetzt noch? Wie könnt ihr da zu mir sagen: Was ist los?
The sons of Dan said to him, “Do not let your voice be heard among us, or else fierce men will fall upon you and you will lose your life, with the lives of your household.”
Die Daniter entgegneten ihm: Lass deine Stimme nicht bei uns hören, sonst fallen erbitterte Leute über euch her und du nimmst dir und deinem Haus selbst das Leben.
So the sons of Dan went on their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.
Dann zogen die Daniter auf ihrem Weg weiter. Micha aber sah ein, dass sie stärker waren als er, kehrte um und ging nach Hause zurück.
Then they took what Micah had made and the priest who had belonged to him, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and secure, and struck them with the edge of the sword; and they burned the city with fire.
Sie aber hatten genommen, was Micha angefertigt hatte, samt dem Priester, den er hatte, und sie überfielen Lajisch, ein ruhiges und friedliches Volk. Sie erschlugen die Leute mit scharfem Schwert und steckten die Stadt in Brand.
And there was no one to deliver them, because it was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone, and it was in the valley which is near Beth-rehob. And they rebuilt the city and lived in it.
Niemand kam zu Hilfe; denn die Stadt lag weit entfernt von Sidon und hatte mit keinem Menschen zu tun; sie lag im Tal von Bet-Rehob. Die Daniter bauten die Stadt wieder auf und wohnten in ihr.
They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father who was born in Israel; however, the name of the city formerly was Laish.
Sie nannten sie Dan, nach dem Namen ihres Stammvaters Dan, der einst dem Israel geboren worden war. Doch früher hatte die Stadt den Namen Lajisch.
The sons of Dan set up for themselves the graven image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.
Die Daniter stellten das Schnitzbild bei sich auf und Jonatan, der Sohn Gerschoms, des Sohnes des Mose, und seine Nachkommen dienten dem Stamm der Daniter als Priester bis zu dem Tag, an dem die Bewohner des Landes in die Gefangenschaft geführt wurden.
