A Levite’s Concubine Degraded
Now it came about in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite staying in the remote part of the hill country of Ephraim, who took a concubine for himself from Bethlehem in Judah.

Und es war in jenen Tagen, als es keinen König in Israel gab. Es lebte im entlegensten Teil des Gebirges Efraim ein Levit als Fremder. Er nahm sich eine Nebenfrau aus Betlehem in Juda.
But his concubine played the harlot against him, and she went away from him to her father’s house in Bethlehem in Judah, and was there for a period of four months.
Aber seine Nebenfrau wurde ihm untreu und ging von ihm fort in das Haus ihres Vaters nach Betlehem in Juda. Dort war sie eine Zeit lang, vier Monate lang.
Then her husband arose and went after her to speak tenderly to her in order to bring her back, taking with him his servant and a pair of donkeys. So she brought him into her father’s house, and when the girl’s father saw him, he was glad to meet him.
Da machte sich ihr Mann auf den Weg und zog ihr mit seinem Knecht und zwei Eseln nach, um ihr zu Herzen zu reden und sie zurückzuholen. Die Frau brachte ihn in das Haus ihres Vaters, und als der Vater der jungen Frau ihn sah, freute er sich bei der Begegnung.
His father-in-law, the girl’s father, detained him; and he remained with him three days. So they ate and drank and lodged there.
Da sein Schwiegervater, der Vater der jungen Frau, ihn dringend darum bat, blieb er drei Tage bei ihm. Sie aßen und tranken und übernachteten dort.
Now on the fourth day they got up early in the morning, and he prepared to go; and the girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Sustain yourself with a piece of bread, and afterward you may go.”
Und es geschah am vierten Tag, da erhoben sie sich frühmorgens und er machte sich auf, um wegzugehen. Da sagte der Vater der jungen Frau zu seinem Schwiegersohn: Stärke dein Herz mit einem Bissen Brot; dann könnt ihr gehen.
So both of them sat down and ate and drank together; and the girl’s father said to the man, “Please be willing to spend the night, and let your heart be merry.”
So blieben sie und die beiden aßen und tranken zusammen. Der Vater der jungen Frau aber sagte zu dem Mann: Entschließ dich doch und bleib über Nacht und lass dein Herz froh sein!
Then the man arose to go, but his father-in-law urged him so that he spent the night there again.
Der Mann stand auf, um zu gehen; doch sein Schwiegervater nötigte ihn, sodass er dort noch einmal übernachtete.
On the fifth day he arose to go early in the morning, and the girl’s father said, “Please sustain yourself, and wait until afternoon”; so both of them ate.
Als er sich dann am Morgen des fünften Tages aufmachte, um wegzugehen, sagte der Vater der jungen Frau: Stärke doch dein Herz und lasst euch Zeit, bis der Tag zur Neige geht! So aßen die beiden zusammen.
When the man arose to go along with his concubine and servant, his father-in-law, the girl’s father, said to him, “Behold now, the day has drawn to a close; please spend the night. Lo, the day is coming to an end; spend the night here that your heart may be merry. Then tomorrow you may arise early for your journey so that you may go home.”
Dann stand der Mann auf, um mit seiner Nebenfrau und seinem Knecht abzureisen. Sein Schwiegervater aber, der Vater der jungen Frau, sagte zu ihm: Sieh doch, der Tag geht zu Ende und es wird Abend. Bleibt über Nacht hier! Siehe, der Tag geht zur Neige; bleib über Nacht hier und lass dein Herz froh sein! Morgen früh könnt ihr euch auf den Weg machen und du kannst zu deinem Zelt gehen!
But the man was not willing to spend the night, so he arose and departed and came to a place opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). And there were with him a pair of saddled donkeys; his concubine also was with him.
Aber der Mann wollte nicht über Nacht bleiben, sondern erhob sich und ging fort und kam zu einem Ort gegenüber von Jebus, das heißt Jerusalem; er hatte ein Paar gesattelter Esel und seine Nebenfrau bei sich.
When they were near Jebus, the day was almost gone; and the servant said to his master, “Please come, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it.”
Als sie dort waren, war der Tag schon fast zu Ende gegangen. Darum sagte der Knecht zu seinem Herrn: Komm, wir wollen in der Jebusiterstadt hier einkehren und übernachten.
However, his master said to him, “We will not turn aside into the city of foreigners who are not of the sons of Israel; but we will go on as far as Gibeah.”
Sein Herr antwortete ihm: Wir wollen nicht in einer Stadt von Fremden, die nicht zu den Israeliten gehört, einkehren, sondern nach Gibea weiterziehen.
He said to his servant, “Come and let us approach one of these places; and we will spend the night in Gibeah or Ramah.”
Und er sagte zu seinem Knecht: Komm, wir wollen zu einem der Orte gehen; wir wollen in Gibea oder Rama über Nacht bleiben.
So they passed along and went their way, and the sun set on them near Gibeah which belongs to Benjamin.
Sie zogen also weiter und gingen; da ging ihnen bei Gibea, das zu Benjamin gehört, die Sonne unter.
They turned aside there in order to enter and lodge in Gibeah. When they entered, they sat down in the open square of the city, for no one took them into his house to spend the night.
Sie bogen dort ab, um nach Gibea hineinzugehen und dort über Nacht zu bleiben. Er ging hinein und blieb auf dem Platz der Stadt; aber es fand sich niemand, der ihn in seinem Haus zum Übernachten aufnehmen wollte.
Then behold, an old man was coming out of the field from his work at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he was staying in Gibeah, but the men of the place were Benjamites.
Und siehe, ein alter Mann kam am Abend von seiner Arbeit auf dem Feld. Der Mann stammte aus dem Gebirge Efraim und lebte als Fremder in Gibea; die Einwohner des Ortes waren Benjaminiter.
And he lifted up his eyes and saw the traveler in the open square of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going, and where do you come from?”
Als der alte Mann aufsah, erblickte er den Wanderer auf dem Platz der Stadt und fragte ihn: Woher kommst du und wohin gehst du?
He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem in Judah to the remote part of the hill country of Ephraim, for I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem in Judah. But I am now going to my house, and no man will take me into his house.
Er antwortete ihm: Wir sind auf der Durchreise von Betlehem in Juda zum entlegensten Teil des Gebirges Efraim. Von dort komme ich; ich war nach Betlehem in Juda gegangen und bin nun auf dem Weg nach Hause. Aber hier findet sich niemand, der mich in sein Haus aufnimmt,
“Yet there is both straw and fodder for our donkeys, and also bread and wine for me, your maidservant, and the young man who is with your servants; there is no lack of anything.”
obwohl Stroh und Futter für unsere Esel vorhanden ist und auch Brot und Wein für mich, deine Magd und den Knecht, der bei deinen Dienern ist. Es fehlt also an nichts.
The old man said, “Peace to you. Only let me take care of all your needs; however, do not spend the night in the open square.”
Der alte Mann entgegnete: Friede sei mit dir! Was dir fehlt, das lass nur meine Sorge sein; auf dem Platz jedenfalls darfst du nicht übernachten.
So he took him into his house and gave the donkeys fodder, and they washed their feet and ate and drank.
Und er führte ihn in sein Haus und schüttete den Eseln Futter vor. Sie wuschen sich die Füße und aßen und tranken.
While they were celebrating, behold, the men of the city, certain worthless fellows, surrounded the house, pounding the door; and they spoke to the owner of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house that we may have relations with him.”
Während sie ihr Herz froh sein ließen, siehe, da umringten die Männer aus der Stadt, übles Gesindel, das Haus, schlugen an die Tür und sagten zu dem alten Mann, dem Besitzer des Hauses: Bring den Mann heraus, der in dein Haus gekommen ist, damit wir ihn erkennen!
Then the man, the owner of the house, went out to them and said to them, “No, my fellows, please do not act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, do not commit this act of folly.
Der Besitzer des Hauses ging zu ihnen hinaus und sagte zu ihnen: Nein, meine Brüder, so etwas Schlimmes dürft ihr nicht tun. Dieser Mann ist als Gast in mein Haus gekommen; darum dürft ihr keine solche Schandtat begehen.
“Here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. Please let me bring them out that you may ravish them and do to them whatever you wish. But do not commit such an act of folly against this man.”
Siehe, da sind meine jungfräuliche Tochter und seine Nebenfrau. Sie will ich zu euch hinausbringen; vergewaltigt sie und macht mit ihnen, wie es gut ist in euren Augen. Aber an diesem Mann dürft ihr keine solche Schandtat begehen.
But the men would not listen to him. So the man seized his concubine and brought her out to them; and they raped her and abused her all night until morning, then let her go at the approach of dawn.
Doch die Männer wollten nicht auf ihn hören. Da ergriff der Levit seine Nebenfrau und brachte sie zu ihnen auf die Straße hinaus. Sie erkannten sie und trieben die ganze Nacht hindurch bis zum Morgen ihren Mutwillen mit ihr. Sie schickten sie erst fort, als die Morgenröte heraufzog.
As the day began to dawn, the woman came and fell down at the doorway of the man’s house where her master was, until full daylight.
Als der Morgen anbrach, kam die Frau zurück; vor der Haustür des Mannes, bei dem ihr Herr wohnte, brach sie zusammen und blieb dort liegen, bis es hell wurde.
When her master arose in the morning and opened the doors of the house and went out to go on his way, then behold, his concubine was lying at the doorway of the house with her hands on the threshold.
Ihr Herr stand am Morgen auf, öffnete die Haustür und ging hinaus, um seine Reise fortzusetzen. Und siehe, die Frau, seine Nebenfrau, lag am Eingang des Hauses, die Hände auf der Schwelle.
He said to her, “Get up and let us go,” but there was no answer. Then he placed her on the donkey; and the man arose and went to his home.
Er sagte zu ihr: Steh auf, wir wollen gehen! Doch niemand antwortete. Da lud er sie auf den Esel, machte sich auf und ging an seinen Ort.
When he entered his house, he took a knife and laid hold of his concubine and cut her in twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
Als er nach Hause gekommen war, nahm er das Messer, ergriff seine Nebenfrau, zerschnitt sie in zwölf Stücke, Glied für Glied, und schickte sie in das ganze Gebiet Israels.
All who saw it said, “Nothing like this has ever happened or been seen from the day when the sons of Israel came up from the land of Egypt to this day. Consider it, take counsel and speak up!”
Jeder, der das sah, sagte: So etwas ist noch nie geschehen, so etwas hat man nicht erlebt, seit die Söhne Israels aus Ägypten heraufgezogen sind, bis zum heutigen Tag. Denkt nach, beratet und sprecht darüber!
