Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

Josef wurde nach Ägypten hinabgebracht. Ein Ägypter namens Potifar, ein Hofbeamter des Pharao, der Oberste der Leibwache, kaufte ihn den Ismaelitern ab, die ihn dorthin gebracht hatten.
The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
Der HERR war mit Josef und so glückte ihm alles. Er blieb im Haus seines ägyptischen Herrn.
When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,
Sein Herr sah, dass der HERR mit Josef war und dass der HERR alles, was er unternahm, durch seine Hand gelingen ließ.
Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.
So fand Josef Wohlwollen in seinen Augen und er durfte ihn bedienen. Er bestellte ihn über sein Haus und gab alles, was ihm gehörte, in seine Hand.
From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.
Seit er ihn über sein Haus und alles, was ihm gehörte, bestellt hatte, segnete der HERR das Haus des Ägypters um Josefs willen. Der Segen des HERRN ruhte auf allem, was ihm gehörte im Haus und auf dem Feld.
So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.

and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”
Nach einiger Zeit erhob die Frau seines Herrn ihre Augen zu Josef und sagte: Liege bei mir!
But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.
Er weigerte sich und entgegnete der Frau seines Herrn: Siehe, mein Herr kümmert sich, wenn ich da bin, um nichts im Haus; alles, was ihm gehört, hat er in meine Hand gegeben.
No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”
Er ist in diesem Haus nicht größer als ich und er hat mir nichts vorenthalten als nur dich, denn du bist seine Frau. Wie könnte ich da ein so großes Unrecht begehen und gegen Gott sündigen?
And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
Obwohl sie Tag für Tag auf Josef einredete, an ihrer Seite zu liegen und mit ihr zusammen zu sein, hörte er nicht auf sie.
One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.
An einem solchen Tag kam er ins Haus, um seiner Arbeit nachzugehen. Niemand von den Hausleuten war dort im Haus.
She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
Da packte sie ihn an seinem Gewand und sagte: Liege bei mir! Er ließ sein Gewand in ihrer Hand, floh und lief nach draußen.
When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,
Als sie sah, dass er sein Gewand in ihrer Hand zurückgelassen hatte und nach draußen geflohen war,
she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.
rief sie nach ihren Hausleuten und sagte zu ihnen: Seht nur! Er hat uns einen Hebräer ins Haus gebracht, seinen Mutwillen mit uns zu treiben. Er ist zu mir gekommen, um bei mir zu liegen; da habe ich laut geschrien.
When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
Als er hörte, dass ich laut aufschrie und rief, ließ er sein Gewand neben mir liegen, floh und lief nach draußen.
She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home.
Sie ließ sein Gewand neben sich liegen, bis sein Herr nach Hause kam.
Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.
Ihm erzählte sie die gleiche Geschichte: Der hebräische Sklave, den du uns gebracht hast, ist zu mir gekommen, um mit mir seinen Mutwillen zu treiben.
But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
Als ich laut aufschrie und rief, ließ er sein Gewand neben mir liegen und floh nach draußen.
When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger.
Als sein Herr hörte, wie ihm seine Frau erzählte: Genau das hat dein Sklave mir angetan!, packte ihn der Zorn.
Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
But while Joseph was there in the prison,

Josefs Herr ergriff ihn und warf ihn in den Kerker, den Ort, an dem die Gefangenen des Königs in Haft gehalten wurden. Dort blieb er im Kerker.
the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.
Aber der HERR war mit Josef. Er wandte ihm das Wohlwollen und die Gunst des Kerkermeisters zu.
So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.
Der Kerkermeister übergab der Hand Josefs alle Gefangenen im Kerker. Alles, was dort zu tun war, tat Josef.
