Purpose and Theme

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

Dies sind die Sprüche Salomos, des Königs in Israel, des Sohnes Davids,

for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;

zu lernen Weisheit und Zucht, Verstand,

for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;

Klugheit, Gerechtigkeit, Recht und Schlecht;

for giving prudence to those who are simple,a
knowledge and discretion to the young —

daß die Unverständigen klug und die Jünglinge vernünftig und vorsichtig werden.

let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance —

Wer weise ist, der hört zu und bessert sich; wer verständig ist, der läßt sich raten,

for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.b

daß er verstehe die Sprüche und ihre Deutung, die Lehre der Weisen und ihre Beispiele.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but foolsc despise wisdom and instruction.

Des HERRN Furcht ist Anfang der Erkenntnis. Die Ruchlosen verachten Weisheit und Zucht.

Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom

Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

Mein Kind, gehorche der Zucht deines Vaters und verlaß nicht das Gebot deiner Mutter.

They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.

Denn solches ist ein schöner Schmuck deinem Haupt und eine Kette an deinem Halse.

My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.

Mein Kind, wenn dich die bösen Buben locken, so folge nicht.

If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;

Wenn sie sagen: «Gehe mit uns! wir wollen auf Blut lauern und den Unschuldigen ohne Ursache nachstellen;

let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;

wir wollen sie lebendig verschlingen wie die Hölle und die Frommen wie die, so hinunter in die Grube fahren;

we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;

wir wollen großes Gut finden; wir wollen unsre Häuser mit Raub füllen;

cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot” —

wage es mit uns! es soll unser aller ein Beutel sein":

my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;

mein Kind, wandle den Weg nicht mit ihnen; wehre deinem Fuß vor ihrem Pfad.

for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.

Denn ihr Füße laufen zum Bösen und eilen, Blut zu vergießen.

How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!

Denn es ist vergeblich, das Netz auswerfen vor den Augen der Vögel.

These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!

Sie aber lauern auf ihr eigen Blut und stellen sich selbst nach dem Leben.

Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.

Also geht es allen, die nach Gewinn geizen, daß ihr Geiz ihnen das Leben nimmt.

Wisdom’s Rebuke

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;

Die Weisheit klagt draußen und läßt sich hören auf den Gassen;

on top of the walld she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:

sie ruft in dem Eingang des Tores, vorn unter dem Volk; sie redet ihre Worte in der Stadt:

“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?

Wie lange wollt ihr Unverständigen unverständig sein und die Spötter Lust zu Spötterei haben und die Ruchlosen die Lehre hassen?

Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.

Kehret euch zu meiner Strafe. Siehe, ich will euch heraussagen meinen Geist und euch meine Worte kundtun.

But since you refuse to listen when I call
and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,

Weil ich denn rufe, und ihr weigert euch, ich recke meine Hand aus, und niemand achtet darauf,

since you disregard all my advice
and do not accept my rebuke,

und laßt fahren allen meinen Rat und wollet meine Strafe nicht:

I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;
I will mock when calamity overtakes you —

so will ich auch lachen in eurem Unglück und euer spotten, wenn da kommt, was ihr fürchtet,

when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when distress and trouble overwhelm you.

wenn über euch kommt wie ein Sturm, was ihr fürchtet, und euer Unglück als ein Wetter, wenn über euch Angst und Not kommt.

“Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me,

Dann werden sie nach mir rufen, aber ich werde nicht antworten; sie werden mich suchen, und nicht finden.

since they hated knowledge
and did not choose to fear the Lord.

Darum, daß sie haßten die Lehre und wollten des HERRN Furcht nicht haben,

Since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,

wollten meinen Rat nicht und lästerten alle meine Strafe:

they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.

so sollen sie essen von den Früchten ihres Wesens und ihres Rats satt werden.

For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

Was die Unverständigen gelüstet, tötet sie, und der Ruchlosen Glück bringt sie um.

but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

Wer aber mir gehorcht, wird sicher bleiben und genug haben und kein Unglück fürchten.
