“What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel:
“ ‘The parents eat sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

Wie kommt ihr dazu, auf dem Ackerboden Israels das Sprichwort zu gebrauchen: Die Väter essen saure Trauben und den Söhnen werden die Zähne stumpf?
“As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.
So wahr ich lebe — Spruch GOTTES, des Herrn — , keiner von euch in Israel soll mehr dieses Sprichwort gebrauchen.
For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child — both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.
Siehe, alle Menschenleben gehören mir. Das Leben des Vaters ebenso wie das Leben des Sohnes: Sie gehören mir. Der Mensch, der sündigt, nur er soll sterben.

Er hält keine Opfermahlzeiten auf den Bergen. Er blickt nicht zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel auf. Er schändet nicht die Frau seines Nächsten. Einer Frau tritt er nicht nahe während ihrer Blutung.

Wenn er also nach meinen Satzungen geht und meine Rechtsentscheide bewahrt und sie treu befolgt: Gerecht ist er, er wird gewiss am Leben bleiben — Spruch GOTTES, des Herrn.
Zeugt er aber einen Sohn, der gewalttätig wird, der Blut vergießt und eines von diesen Dingen verübt,

den Elenden und Armen unterdrückt, Raub begeht, ein Pfand nicht zurückgibt, zu den Götzen aufblickt und Gräueltaten verübt,

gegen Zins gibt und Wucher treibt — soll der am Leben bleiben? Er soll nicht am Leben bleiben. Er hat alle diese Gräueltaten verübt. Er hat den Tod verdient. Seine Bluttaten werden auf ihm sein.

Er hält seine Hand vom Armen fern. Er nimmt keinen Zins und treibt keinen Wucher. Er befolgt meine Rechtsentscheide und geht nach meinen Satzungen. Er wird nicht wegen der Schuld seines Vaters sterben; er wird gewiss am Leben bleiben.
But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.
Sein Vater aber, da er Erpressung verübte, Raub gegen seinen Bruder beging und inmitten seines Volkes tat, was nicht recht ist, siehe, er musste wegen seiner Schuld sterben.
“Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.
Ihr aber sagt: Warum trägt der Sohn nicht mit an der Schuld des Vaters? Der Sohn hat nach Recht und Gerechtigkeit gehandelt. Er hat alle meine Satzungen bewahrt und sie befolgt. Er wird bestimmt am Leben bleiben.
The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.
Der Mensch, der sündigt, nur er soll sterben. Ein Sohn soll nicht an der Schuld des Vaters mittragen und ein Vater soll nicht an der Schuld des Sohnes mittragen. Die Gerechtigkeit des Gerechten kommt über ihn selbst und die Schuld des Schuldigen kommt über ihn selbst.
“But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die.
Wenn der Schuldige sich von allen Sünden, die er getan hat, abwendet, alle meine Satzungen bewahrt und nach Recht und Gerechtigkeit handelt, wird er bestimmt am Leben bleiben, er wird nicht sterben.
None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live.
Keines seiner Vergehen, die er begangen hat, wird ihm angerechnet. Wegen seiner Gerechtigkeit, die er geübt hat, wird er am Leben bleiben.
Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?
Habe ich etwa Gefallen am Tod des Schuldigen — Spruch GOTTES, des Herrn — und nicht vielmehr daran, dass er umkehrt von seinen Wegen und am Leben bleibt?
“But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.
Wenn jedoch ein Gerechter sich abkehrt von seiner Gerechtigkeit und Unrecht tut, all die Gräueltat, die auch der Schuldige verübt, sollte er dann etwa am Leben bleiben? Keine seiner gerechten Taten wird ihm angerechnet. Wegen seiner Treulosigkeit, die er verübt, und wegen der Sünde, die er begangen hat, ihretwegen muss er sterben.
“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
Ihr aber sagt: Der Weg des Herrn ist nicht richtig. Hört doch, ihr vom Haus Israel: Mein Weg soll nicht richtig sein? Sind es nicht eure Wege, die nicht richtig sind?
If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die.
Wenn ein Gerechter sich abkehrt von seiner Gerechtigkeit und Unrecht tut, muss er dafür sterben. Wegen des Unrechts, das er getan hat, wird er sterben.
But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.
Wenn ein Schuldiger von dem Unrecht umkehrt, das er begangen hat, und nach Recht und Gerechtigkeit handelt, wird er sein Leben bewahren.
Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.
Wenn er alle seine Vergehen, die er verübt hat, einsieht und umkehrt, wird er bestimmt am Leben bleiben. Er wird nicht sterben.
Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
Die vom Haus Israel aber sagen: Der Weg des Herrn ist nicht richtig. Mein Weg soll nicht richtig sein, ihr vom Haus Israel? Sind es nicht vielmehr eure Wege, die nicht richtig sind?
“Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.
Darum will ich euch richten, jeden nach seinem Weg, ihr vom Haus Israel — Spruch GOTTES, des Herrn. Kehrt um, kehrt euch ab von all euren Vergehen! Sie sollen für euch nicht länger der Anlass sein, in Schuld zu fallen.
Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel?
Werft alle Vergehen von euch, die ihr verübt habt! Schafft euch ein neues Herz und einen neuen Geist! Warum wollt ihr denn sterben, ihr vom Haus Israel?
