The Lord Calls Samuel

Der junge Samuel wohnte bei Eli und diente dem HERRN. Zu jener Zeit geschah es sehr selten, dass der HERR den Menschen durch Worte oder Visionen etwas mitteilte.
One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.
Der alte Eli war inzwischen fast erblindet. Eines Nachts war er wie gewohnt zu Bett gegangen.
The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was.
Auch Samuel hatte sich hingelegt. Er schlief im Heiligtum, ganz in der Nähe der Bundeslade. Die Lampe vor dem Allerheiligsten brannte noch.
Then the Lord called Samuel.
Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

und lief schnell zu Eli. »Hier bin ich. Du hast mich gerufen.« Aber Eli sagte: »Nein, ich habe dich nicht gerufen. Geh nur wieder schlafen.« So legte Samuel sich wieder ins Bett.
Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”
“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

Aber der HERR rief noch einmal: »Samuel, Samuel!« Und wieder sprang Samuel auf und lief zu Eli. »Ich bin schon da, du hast mich doch gerufen!«, sagte er. Eli verneinte wieder: »Ich habe dich nicht gerufen, mein Junge. Geh jetzt und leg dich ins Bett!«
Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.
Samuel wusste nicht, dass es der HERR war, denn Gott hatte bisher noch nie direkt zu ihm gesprochen.
A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Doch nun rief der HERR zum dritten Mal: »Samuel, Samuel!« Und noch einmal lief der Junge zu Eli und sagte: »Hier bin ich! Jetzt hast du mich aber gerufen!« Da erkannte Eli, dass der HERR mit Samuel reden wollte.
So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
Darum wies er ihn an: »Geh und leg dich wieder hin! Und wenn dich noch einmal jemand ruft, dann antworte: ›Sprich, HERR, ich höre. Ich will tun, was du sagst.‹« Also ging Samuel wieder zu Bett.
The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”
Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Da trat der HERR zu ihm und rief wie vorher: »Samuel, Samuel!« Der Junge antwortete: »Sprich nur, ich höre. Ich will tun, was du sagst.«
And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.
Darauf sagte der HERR: »Ich will in Israel etwas so Schreckliches tun, dass keiner es ertragen kann, davon zu hören.
At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family — from beginning to end.
Bald werde ich Eli und seine Familie schwer bestrafen. Genauso wie ich es mir vorgenommen habe, lasse ich das Unglück über sie kommen.
Ich habe es Eli schon gesagt. Denn er wusste genau, dass seine Söhne durch ihre Machenschaften meinen Zorn auf sich ziehen. Trotzdem ließ er sie tun, was sie wollten. Darum sollen sie und ihre Nachkommen für alle Zeiten unter meinem Fluch stehen.
Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’ ”
Ich habe geschworen: Weder durch Tieropfer noch durch andere Opfergaben sollen die Nachkommen Elis diese Schuld je wiedergutmachen können!«
Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision,
Samuel blieb bis zum Morgen im Bett und öffnete dann wie gewohnt die Türen des Heiligtums. Er scheute sich, Eli von Gottes Botschaft zu erzählen.
but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”
Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

Doch Eli rief ihn zu sich. »Mein Junge, was hat Gott dir gesagt?«, wollte er wissen. »Du musst mir alles genau berichten! Gott soll dich schwer bestrafen, wenn du mir auch nur ein Wort verheimlichst.«
So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”
Da erzählte Samuel ihm alles, ohne etwas zu verschweigen. »Er ist der HERR«, sagte Eli darauf, »er soll tun, was er für richtig hält.«
The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.
Samuel wuchs heran. Der HERR stand ihm bei und ließ keine Ankündigung von Samuel unerfüllt bleiben.
And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.
Ganz Israel, von Dan im Norden bis Beerscheba im Süden, erkannte, dass der HERR ihn zum Propheten erwählt hatte.
