Abraham and Abimelech

And Abraham journeyed from there to the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar.

Abraham brach von dort auf in das Land des Negeb. Er ließ sich zwischen Kadesch und Schur nieder und hielt sich in Gerar als Fremder auf.

Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

Abraham sagte von Sara, seiner Frau: Sie ist meine Schwester. Da schickte Abimelech, der König von Gerar, hin und ließ Sara holen.

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is [a]a man’s wife.”

Gott kam nachts zu Abimelech im Traum und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, du wirst sterben wegen der Frau, die du dir genommen hast; sie ist verheiratet.

But Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, will You slay a righteous nation also?

Abimelech aber hatte sich ihr noch nicht genaht. Mein Herr, sagte er, willst du denn schuldlose Menschen töten?

Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the [b]integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands I have done this.”

Hat er mir nicht selbst gesagt: Sie ist meine Schwester? Auch sie selbst hat gesagt: Er ist mein Bruder. Mit arglosem Herzen und mit reinen Händen habe ich das getan.

And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

Da sprach Gott zu ihm im Traum: Auch ich weiß, dass du es mit arglosem Herzen getan hast. Ich habe dich ja auch daran gehindert, gegen mich zu sündigen. Darum habe ich nicht zugelassen, dass du sie anrührst.

Now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”

Jetzt aber, gib die Frau dieses Mannes zurück! Denn er ist ein Prophet. Er wird für dich beten, sodass du am Leben bleibst. Gibst du sie aber nicht zurück, dann sollst du wissen: Du musst sterben, du und alles, was dir gehört.

So Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants, and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were very much afraid.

Am Morgen stand Abimelech auf, ließ alle seine Knechte rufen und erzählte ihnen alles, was vorgefallen war. Da gerieten die Männer in große Furcht.

And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? How have I [c]offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done.”

Nun ließ Abimelech Abraham rufen und stellte ihn zur Rede: Was hast du uns angetan? Womit habe ich denn gegen dich gesündigt, dass du über mich und mein Reich eine so große Sünde bringst? Du hast mir etwas angetan, was man nicht tun darf.

Then Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you have in view, that you have done this thing?”

Und Abimelech fragte Abraham: Was hattest du vor, als du das tatest?

And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife.

Abraham entgegnete: Ich sagte mir: Es gibt gar keine Gottesfurcht an diesem Ort und man könnte mich wegen meiner Frau umbringen.

But indeed she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

Übrigens ist sie wirklich meine Schwester, die Tochter meines Vaters, doch nicht die Tochter meiner Mutter; so konnte sie meine Frau werden.

And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is your kindness that you should do for me: in every place, wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ”

Als mich aber Gott aus dem Haus meines Vaters ins Ungewisse ziehen hieß, da sagte ich zu ihr: Tu mir den Gefallen und sag von mir überall, wohin wir kommen: Er ist mein Bruder.

Then Abimelech took sheep, oxen, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham; and he restored Sarah his wife to him.

Darauf nahm Abimelech Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder, Knechte und Mägde und schenkte sie Abraham. Auch gab er ihm seine Frau Sara zurück.

And Abimelech said, “See, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.”

Abimelech sagte: Siehe, mein Land steht dir offen. Wo es dir beliebt, da lass dich nieder!

Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this [d]vindicates you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was [e]rebuked.

Zu Sara aber sagte er: Siehe, ich gebe deinem Bruder tausend Silberstücke. Siehe, das soll allen Leuten in deiner Umgebung die Augen zudecken und vor allen erfährst du Genugtuung.

So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants. Then they bore children;

Abraham betete zu Gott und Gott heilte Abimelech, auch seine Frau und seine Dienerinnen, sodass sie wieder gebären konnten.

for the Lord had closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.

Denn der HERR hatte im Haus Abimelechs jeden Mutterschoß ganz verschlossen wegen Sara, der Frau Abrahams.
