The Report of Saul’s Death
Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,

Als David nach dem Tod Sauls von seinem Sieg über die Amalekiter zurückgekehrt war und sich zwei Tage lang in Ziklag aufgehalten hatte,
kam am dritten Tag ein Mann aus dem Lager Sauls, mit zerrissenen Kleidern und Staub auf dem Haupt. Als er bei David angelangt war, warf er sich auf den Boden nieder und huldigte ihm.
And David said to him, “Where have you come from?”
So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”
So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”
David fragte ihn: Woher kommst du? Er antwortete ihm: Ich habe mich aus dem Lager Israels gerettet.
Then David said to him, “How did the matter go? Please tell me.”
And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.”

David sagte zu ihm: Wie stehen die Dinge? Berichte mir! Er erwiderte: Das Volk ist aus dem Kampf geflohen, viele von den Männern sind gefallen und umgekommen; auch Saul und sein Sohn Jonatan sind tot.
So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”
David fragte den jungen Mann, der ihm die Nachricht brachte: Woher weißt du, dass Saul und sein Sohn Jonatan tot sind?
Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.
Der junge Mann, der ihm die Nachricht brachte, sagte: Ich kam zufällig auf das Gebirge von Gilboa; da sah ich, wie sich Saul auf seinen Speer stützte und Kriegswagen und Reiter auf ihn eindrangen.
Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’
Er wandte sich um, und als er mich sah, rief er mich. Ich antwortete: Hier bin ich.
And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’
Er fragte mich: Wer bist du? Ich gab ihm zur Antwort: Ich bin ein Amalekiter.
Da sagte er zu mir: Komm her zu mir und töte mich! Denn mich hat ein Schwächeanfall erfasst, aber noch ist alles Leben in mir.
So I stood over him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”
Ich ging also zu ihm hin und tötete ihn; denn ich wusste, dass er seinen Sturz nicht überleben würde. Dann nahm ich den Stirnreif, den er auf dem Kopf trug, und die Spange, die er am Arm hatte, und bringe sie nun hierher zu meinem Herrn.
Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them, and so did all the men who were with him.
Da fasste David sein Gewand und zerriss es und mit ihm alle Männer um ihn.
And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
Sie klagten, weinten und fasteten bis zum Abend wegen Saul, seines Sohnes Jonatan, des Volkes des HERRN und des Hauses Israel, die unter dem Schwert gefallen waren.
Then David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?”
And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.”
And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.”
Und David fragte den jungen Mann, der ihm die Nachricht gebracht hatte: Woher bist du? Er antwortete: Ich bin der Sohn eines Einwanderers aus Amalek.
So David said to him, “How was it you were not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?”
David fragte ihn: Wie kommt es, dass du dich nicht davor gefürchtet hast, deine Hand auszustrecken, um den Gesalbten des HERRN umzubringen?
Then David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and execute him!” And he struck him so that he died.
Darauf rief David einen von seinen jungen Männern zu sich und sagte: Komm her, stoß ihn nieder! Und er schlug ihn tot.
So David said to him, “Your blood is on your own head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’ ”
David aber sagte zu ihm: Dein Blut über dein Haupt; denn dein Mund zeugt gegen dich, wenn du sagst: Ich habe den Gesalbten des HERRN getötet.
The Song of the Bow
Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,

er sagte, man solle es die Söhne Judas als Bogenlied lehren; es steht im Buch des Aufrechten:
“The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places!

Israel, dein Stolz liegt erschlagen auf deinen Höhen. Ach, die Helden sind gefallen!
Tell it not in Gath,
Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon —
Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Meldet es nicht in Gat, verkündet es nicht auf Aschkelons Straßen, damit die Töchter der Philister sich nicht freuen, damit die Töchter der Unbeschnittenen nicht jauchzen.
Ihr Berge in Gilboa, kein Tau und kein Regen falle auf euch und auch nicht auf euch, ihr Gefilde der Erstlingsgaben. Denn dort wurde der Schild der Helden befleckt, der Schild des Saul, als wäre er nicht mit Öl gesalbt.

Ohne das Blut von Erschlagenen, ohne das Mark der Helden kam der Bogen Jonatans nie zurück; auch das Schwert Sauls kehrte niemals erfolglos zurück.

And in their death they were not divided;
They were swifter than eagles,
They were stronger than lions.

Saul und Jonatan, die Geliebten und Teuren, im Leben und Tod sind sie nicht getrennt. Sie waren schneller als Adler, waren stärker als Löwen.
“O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury;
Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

Ihr Töchter Israels, weint um Saul; er hat euch in köstlichen Purpur gekleidet, hat goldenen Schmuck auf eure Gewänder geheftet.

Ach, die Helden sind gefallen mitten im Kampf. Jonatan liegt erschlagen auf deinen Höhen.
I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
You have been very pleasant to me;
Your love to me was wonderful,
Surpassing the love of women.

Weh ist mir um dich, mein Bruder Jonatan. Du warst mir sehr lieb. Wunderbarer war deine Liebe für mich als die Liebe der Frauen.
