Joash Repairs the Temple
Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba.

Joas war sieben Jahre alt, da er König ward, und regierte 40 Jahre zu Jerusalem. Seine Mutter hieß Zibja von Beer–Seba.
Joash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
Und Joas tat, was dem HERRN wohl gefiel, solange der Priester Jojada lebte.
And Jehoiada took two wives for him, and he had sons and daughters.
Und Jojada gab ihm zwei Weiber, und er zeugte Söhne und Töchter.
Now it happened after this that Joash set his heart on repairing the house of the Lord.
Darnach nahm sich Joas vor das Haus des HERRN zu erneuern,
Then he gathered the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather from all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that you do it quickly.”

und versammelte die Priester und Leviten und sprach zu ihnen: Ziehet aus zu allen Städten Juda’s und sammelt Geld aus ganz Israel, das Haus eures Gottes zu bessern jährlich, und eilet, solches zu tun. Aber die Leviten eilten nicht.
So the king called Jehoiada the chief priest, and said to him, “Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and from Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord and of the assembly of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?”
Da rief der König Jojada, den Vornehmsten, und sprach zu ihm: Warum hast du nicht acht auf die Leviten, daß sie einbringen von Juda und Jerusalem die Steuer, die Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, gesetzt hat, die man sammelte unter Israel zu der Hütte des Stifts?
For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken into the house of God, and had also presented all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord to the Baals.
Denn die gottlose Athalja und ihre Söhne haben das Haus Gottes zerrissen, und alles, was zum Hause des HERRN geheiligt war, haben sie an die Baalim gebracht.
Then at the king’s command they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of the house of the Lord.
Da befahl der König, daß man eine Lade machte und setzte sie außen ins Tor am Hause des HERRN,
And they made a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to bring to the Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God had imposed on Israel in the wilderness.
und ließ ausrufen in Juda und zu Jerusalem, daß man dem HERRN einbringen sollte die Steuer, die von Mose, dem Knecht Gottes, auf Israel gelegt war in der Wüste.
Then all the leaders and all the people rejoiced, brought their contributions, and put them into the chest until all had given.
Da freuten sich alle Obersten und alles Volk und brachten’s und warfen’s in die Lade, bis sie voll ward.
So it was, at that time, when the chest was brought to the king’s official by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, that the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it and returned it to its place. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
Und wenn’s Zeit war, daß man die Lade herbringen sollte durch die Leviten nach des Königs Befehl (wenn sie sahen, daß viel Geld darin war), so kam der Schreiber des Königs und wer vom vornehmsten Priester Befehl hatte, und schütteten die Lade aus und trugen sie wieder hin an ihren Ort. So taten sie alle Tage, daß sie Geld die Menge zuhauf brachten.
The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of the house of the Lord; and they hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, and also those who worked in iron and bronze to restore the house of the Lord.
Und der König und Jojada gaben’s den Werkmeistern, die da schafften am Hause des HERRN; dieselben dingten Steinmetzen und Zimmerleute, zu erneuern das Haus des HERRN; auch Meister in Eisen und Erz, zu bessern das Haus des HERRN.
So the workmen labored, and the work was completed by them; they restored the house of God to its original condition and reinforced it.
Und die Arbeiter arbeiteten, daß die Besserung im Werk zunahm durch ihre Hand, und machten das Haus Gottes ganz fertig und wohl zugerichtet.
When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada; they made from it articles for the house of the Lord, articles for serving and offering, spoons and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada.
Und da sie es vollendet hatten, brachten sie das übrige Geld vor den König und Jojada; davon machte man Gefäße zum Hause des HERRN, Gefäße zum Dienst und zu Brandopfern, Löffel und goldene und silberne Geräte. Und sie opferten Brandopfer bei dem Hause des HERRN allewege, solange Jojada lebte.

Und Jojada ward alt und des Lebens satt und starb, und war 130 Jahre alt, da er starb.
And they buried him in the City of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God and His house.
Und sie begruben ihn in der Stadt Davids unter die Könige, darum daß er hatte wohl getan an Israel und an Gott und seinem Hause.
Now after the death of Jehoiada the leaders of Judah came and bowed down to the king. And the king listened to them.
Und nach dem Tode Jojadas kamen die Obersten von Juda und bückten sich vor dem König; da hörte der König auf sie.
Therefore they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served wooden images and idols; and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem because of their trespass.
Und sie verließen das Haus des HERRN, des Gottes ihrer Väter, und dienten den Ascherabildern und Götzen. Da kam der Zorn über Juda und Jerusalem um dieser ihrer Schuld willen.
Yet He sent prophets to them, to bring them back to the Lord; and they testified against them, but they would not listen.
Er sandte aber Propheten zu ihnen, daß sie sich zu dem HERRN bekehren sollten, und die zeugten wider sie; aber sie nahmen’s nicht zu Ohren.
Und der Geist Gottes erfüllte Sacharja, den Sohn Jojadas, des Priesters. Der trat oben über das Volk und sprach zu ihnen: So spricht Gott: Warum übertretet ihr die Gebote des HERRN und wollt kein Gelingen haben? Denn ihr habt den HERRN verlassen, so wird er euch wieder verlassen.
So they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord.
Aber sie machten einen Bund wider ihn und steinigten ihn, nach dem Gebot des Königs, im Hofe am Hause des HERRN.
Und der König Joas gedachte nicht an die Barmherzigkeit, die Jojada, sein Vater, an ihm getan hatte, sondern erwürgte seinen Sohn. Da er aber starb, sprach er: Der HERR wird’s sehen und heimsuchen.
Und da das Jahr um war, zog herauf das Heer der Syrer, und sie kamen gen Juda und Jerusalem und brachten um alle Obersten im Volk, und allen ihren Raub sandten sie dem König zu Damaskus.
For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; but the Lord delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.
Denn der Syrer Macht kam mit wenig Männer; doch gab der HERR in ihre Hand eine sehr große Macht, darum daß sie den HERRN, ihrer Väter Gott, verlassen hatten. Auch übten sie an Joas Strafe.
And when they had withdrawn from him (for they left him severely wounded), his own servants conspired against him because of the blood of the [d]sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed. So he died. And they buried him in the City of David, but they did not bury him in the tombs of the kings.
Und da sie von ihm zogen, ließen sie ihn in großer Krankheit zurück. Es machten aber seine Knechte einen Bund wider ihn um des Blutes willen der Kinder Jojadas, des Priesters, und erwürgten ihn auf seinem Bett, und er starb. Und man begrub ihn in der Stadt Davids, aber nicht in der Könige Gräbern.
Die aber den Bund wider ihn machten, waren diese: Sabad, der Sohn Simeaths, der Ammonitin, und Josabad, der Sohn Simriths, der Moabitin.
Aber seine Söhne und die Summe, die unter ihm gesammelt ward, und der Bau des Hauses Gottes, siehe, die sind geschrieben in der Historie im Buche der Könige. Und sein Sohn Amazja ward König an seiner Statt.
