Jethro’s Advice

And Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people — that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

Jitro, der Priester von Midian, der Schwiegervater des Mose, hörte, was Gott alles an Mose und seinem Volk Israel getan und wie der HERR Israel aus Ägypten herausgeführt hatte.

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,

Da nahm Jitro, der Schwiegervater des Mose, Zippora mit sich, die Frau des Mose — Mose hatte sie wieder zurückgeschickt — ,

with her two sons, of whom the name of one was [a]Gershom (for he said, “I have been a [b]stranger in a foreign land”)

und ihre beiden Söhne. Der eine hieß Gerschom, weil Mose gesagt hatte: Gast bin ich in fremdem Land.

and the name of the other was [c]Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”);

Der andere hieß Eliëser, weil Mose gesagt hatte: Der Gott meines Vaters hat mir geholfen und hat mich vor dem Schwert des Pharao gerettet.

and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God.

Jitro, der Schwiegervater des Mose, kam mit dessen Söhnen und dessen Frau in die Wüste, wo Mose beim Gottesberg lagerte.

Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”

Er ließ Mose sagen: Ich, dein Schwiegervater Jitro, komme zu dir zusammen mit deiner Frau und ihren beiden Söhnen.

So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and kissed him. And they asked each other about their well-being, and they went into the tent.

Da ging Mose seinem Schwiegervater entgegen, fiel vor ihm nieder und küsste ihn. Dann fragten sie einander nach ihrem Wohlergehen und gingen ins Zelt.

And Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how the Lord had delivered them.

Mose erzählte seinem Schwiegervater alles, was der HERR dem Pharao und den Ägyptern um Israels willen angetan hatte, auch von allen Schwierigkeiten, denen sie unterwegs begegnet waren, und wie der HERR sie gerettet hatte.

Then Jethro rejoiced for all the good which the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

Jitro freute sich über alles, was der HERR an Israel Gutes getan hatte, als er es aus der Hand der Ägypter rettete.

And Jethro said, “Blessed be the Lord, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

Jitro sagte: Gepriesen sei der HERR, der euch aus der Hand der Ägypter und der Hand des Pharao gerettet hat; der das Volk unter der Hand der Ägypter weg errettet hat.

Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they [d]behaved proudly, He was above them.”

Jetzt weiß ich: Der HERR ist größer als alle Götter. Denn worin sie vermessen waren, das ist auf sie zurückgefallen.

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, [e]took a burnt offering and other sacrifices to offer to God. And Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

Dann holte Jitro, der Schwiegervater des Mose, Brandopfer und Schlachtopfer für Gott. Aaron und alle Ältesten Israels kamen, um mit dem Schwiegervater des Mose vor dem Angesicht Gottes ein Mahl zu halten.

And so it was, on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening.

Am folgenden Morgen setzte sich Mose, um für das Volk Recht zu sprechen. Die Leute mussten vor Mose vom Morgen bis zum Abend anstehen.

So when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone [f]sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?”

Als der Schwiegervater des Mose sah, was er alles für das Volk zu tun hatte, sagte er: Was soll das, was du da für das Volk tust? Warum sitzt du hier allein und die vielen Leute müssen vom Morgen bis zum Abend vor dir anstehen?

And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

Mose antwortete seinem Schwiegervater: Weil das Volk zu mir kommt, um Gott zu befragen.

When they have a [g]difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws.”

Wenn sie einen Streitfall haben, kommt er zu mir. Ich entscheide zwischen ihnen und teile ihnen die Gesetze und Weisungen Gottes mit.

So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.

Da sagte der Schwiegervater zu Mose: Es ist nicht gut, wie du das machst.

Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself.

So richtest du dich selbst zugrunde und auch das Volk, das bei dir ist. Das ist zu schwer für dich; allein kannst du es nicht bewältigen.

Listen now to my voice; I will give you [h]counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God.

Nun hör zu, ich will dir einen Rat geben und Gott wird mit dir sein. Vertritt du das Volk vor Gott! Bring ihre Angelegenheiten vor ihn,

And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do.

unterrichte sie in den Gesetzen und Weisungen und mach sie mit dem Weg bekannt, auf dem sie gehen, und mit dem Tun, nach dem sie handeln sollen!

Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

Du aber sieh dich im ganzen Volk nach tüchtigen, gottesfürchtigen und zuverlässigen Männern um, die Bestechung ablehnen. Gib dem Volk Vorsteher für je tausend, hundert, fünfzig und zehn!

And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you.

Sie sollen dem Volk jederzeit als Richter zur Verfügung stehen. Alle wichtigen Fälle sollen sie vor dich bringen, die leichteren sollen sie selber entscheiden. Entlaste dich und lass sie mittragen!

If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace.”

Wenn du das tust, sofern Gott zustimmt, bleibst du der Aufgabe gewachsen und dieses ganze Volk kann in Frieden heimkehren.

So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said.

Mose hörte auf seinen Schwiegervater und tat alles, was er vorschlug.

And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

Mose wählte sich tüchtige Männer in ganz Israel aus und setzte sie als Hauptleute über das Volk ein, als Vorsteher für je tausend, hundert, fünfzig und zehn.

So they judged the people at all times; the hard[i] cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves.

Sie standen dem Volk jederzeit als Richter zur Verfügung. Die schwierigen Fälle brachten sie vor Mose, alle leichteren entschieden sie selber.

Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way to his own land.

Mose verabschiedete seinen Schwiegervater und dieser kehrte in sein Land zurück.
