    Moses Before Pharaoh

    So the Lord said to Moses: “See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.

    Der HERR sprach zu Mose: Hiermit mache ich dich für den Pharao zum Gott; dein Bruder Aaron soll dein Prophet sein.

    You shall speak all that I command you. And Aaron your brother shall tell Pharaoh to send the children of Israel out of his land.

    Du sollst alles sagen, was ich dir auftrage; dein Bruder Aaron soll es dem Pharao sagen und der Pharao muss die Israeliten aus seinem Land fortziehen lassen.

    And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.

    Ich aber will das Herz des Pharao verhärten und dann werde ich meine Zeichen und Wunder im Land Ägypten häufen.

    But Pharaoh will not heed you, so that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring My [a]armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

    Der Pharao wird nicht auf euch hören. Deshalb werde ich meine Hand auf Ägypten legen und mit gewaltigen Entscheiden meine Scharen, mein Volk, die Israeliten, aus Ägypten führen.

    And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.”

    Erst wenn ich meine Hand gegen die Ägypter ausstrecke, werden sie erkennen, dass ich der HERR bin, und dann werde ich die Israeliten aus ihrer Mitte herausführen.

    Then Moses and Aaron did so; just as the Lord commanded them, so they did.

    Mose und Aaron taten, was ihnen der HERR aufgetragen hatte. So machten sie es.

    And Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

    Mose war achtzig Jahre und Aaron dreiundachtzig Jahre alt, als sie mit dem Pharao verhandelten.

    Aaron’s Miraculous Rod

    Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

    Der HERR sprach zu Mose und Aaron:

    “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’ ”

    Wenn der Pharao zu euch sagt: Tut doch ein Wunder zu eurer Beglaubigung!, dann sag zu Aaron: Nimm deinen Stab und wirf ihn vor den Pharao hin! Er wird zu einer Schlange werden.

    So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

    Als Mose und Aaron zum Pharao kamen, taten sie, was ihnen der HERR aufgetragen hatte: Aaron warf seinen Stab vor den Pharao und seine Diener hin und er wurde zu einer Schlange.

    But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the [b]sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their [c]enchantments.

    Da rief auch der Pharao Weise und Beschwörungspriester und sie, die Wahrsager der Ägypter, taten mit Hilfe ihrer Zauberkunst das Gleiche:

    For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.
  • 12
    Jeder warf seinen Stab hin und die Stäbe wurden zu Schlangen. Doch Aarons Stab verschlang ihre Stäbe.

    And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said.

    Das Herz des Pharao aber blieb hart und er hörte nicht auf sie. So hatte es der HERR vorausgesagt.

    The First Plague: Waters Become Blood

    So the Lord said to Moses: “Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to let the people go.

    Der HERR sprach zu Mose: Das Herz des Pharao ist ungerührt und er ist nicht bereit, das Volk ziehen zu lassen.
  • 15
    Go to Pharaoh in the morning, when he goes out to the water, and you shall stand by the river’s bank to meet him; and the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand.

    Geh morgen früh zum Pharao, wenn er zum Wasser hinuntergeht, und tritt am Nilufer vor ihn hin! Den Stab, der sich in eine Schlange verwandelt hat, nimm mit!

    And you shall say to him, ‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go, that they may [d]serve Me in the wilderness”; but indeed, until now you would not hear!

    Sag zu ihm: Der HERR, der Gott der Hebräer, hat mich zu dir gesandt und lässt dir sagen: Lass mein Volk ziehen, damit sie mir in der Wüste dienen können! Bis jetzt hast du nicht hören wollen.

    Thus says the Lord: “By this you shall know that I am the Lord. Behold, I will strike the waters which are in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and they shall be turned to blood.

    So spricht der HERR: Daran sollst du erkennen, dass ich der HERR bin: Mit dem Stab in meiner Hand schlage ich auf das Wasser im Nil und es wird sich in Blut verwandeln.
  • 18
    And the fish that are in the river shall die, the river shall stink, and the Egyptians will loathe[e] to drink the water of the river.” ’ ”

    Die Fische im Nil werden sterben und der Nil wird stinken, sodass sich die Ägypter davor ekeln, Nilwasser zu trinken.

    Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, that they may become blood. And there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in buckets of wood and pitchers of stone.’ ”

    Dann sprach der HERR zu Mose: Sag Aaron: Nimm deinen Stab und streck deine Hand über die Gewässer Ägyptens aus, über ihre Flüsse und Nilarme, über ihre Sümpfe und alle Wasserstellen; sie sollen zu Blut werden. Blut soll es geben in ganz Ägypten, in den Gefäßen aus Holz und Stein.

    And Moses and Aaron did so, just as the Lord commanded. So he lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.

    Mose und Aaron taten, was ihnen der HERR aufgetragen hatte. Er erhob den Stab und schlug vor den Augen des Pharao und seiner Höflinge auf das Wasser im Nil. Da verwandelte sich alles Nilwasser in Blut.

    The fish that were in the river died, the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink the water of the river. So there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

    Die Fische im Nil starben und der Nil stank, sodass die Ägypter kein Nilwasser mehr trinken konnten. Das Blut gab es im ganzen Land Ägypten.

    Then the magicians of Egypt did so with their [f]enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said.

    Doch die Wahrsager der Ägypter taten mit Hilfe ihrer Zauberkunst das Gleiche. Das Herz des Pharao blieb hart und er hörte nicht auf sie. So hatte es der HERR vorausgesagt.

    And Pharaoh turned and went into his house. Neither was his heart moved by this.

    Der Pharao kehrte nach Hause zurück und nahm die Sache nicht ernst.

    So all the Egyptians dug all around the river for water to drink, because they could not drink the water of the river.

    Alle Ägypter gruben in der Umgebung des Nil nach Trinkwasser, denn das Nilwasser konnten sie nicht trinken.

    And seven days passed after the Lord had struck the river.
  • 25
    So vergingen sieben Tage, nachdem der HERR den Nil geschlagen hatte.
