The Eternal Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Im Anfang war das Wort und das Wort war bei Gott und das Wort war Gott.

He was in the beginning with God.

Dieses war im Anfang bei Gott.

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

Alles ist durch das Wort geworden und ohne es wurde nichts, was geworden ist.

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

In ihm war Leben und das Leben war das Licht der Menschen.

And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.

Und das Licht leuchtet in der Finsternis und die Finsternis hat es nicht erfasst.

John’s Witness: The True Light

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

Ein Mensch trat auf, von Gott gesandt; sein Name war Johannes.

This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.

Er kam als Zeuge, um Zeugnis abzulegen für das Licht, damit alle durch ihn zum Glauben kommen.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Er war nicht selbst das Licht, er sollte nur Zeugnis ablegen für das Licht.

That[b] was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.

Das wahre Licht, das jeden Menschen erleuchtet, kam in die Welt.

He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

Er war in der Welt und die Welt ist durch ihn geworden, aber die Welt erkannte ihn nicht.

He came to His [c]own, and His [d]own did not receive Him.

Er kam in sein Eigentum, aber die Seinen nahmen ihn nicht auf.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the [e]right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Allen aber, die ihn aufnahmen, gab er Macht, Kinder Gottes zu werden, allen, die an seinen Namen glauben,

who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

die nicht aus dem Blut, nicht aus dem Willen des Fleisches, nicht aus dem Willen des Mannes, sondern aus Gott geboren sind.

The Word Becomes Flesh

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Und das Wort ist Fleisch geworden und hat unter uns gewohnt und wir haben seine Herrlichkeit geschaut, die Herrlichkeit des einzigen Sohnes vom Vater, voll Gnade und Wahrheit.

John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me [f]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”

Johannes legt Zeugnis für ihn ab und ruft: Dieser war es, über den ich gesagt habe: Er, der nach mir kommt, ist mir voraus, weil er vor mir war.

[g]And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

Aus seiner Fülle haben wir alle empfangen, Gnade über Gnade.

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Denn das Gesetz wurde durch Mose gegeben, die Gnade und die Wahrheit kamen durch Jesus Christus.

No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten [h]Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

Niemand hat Gott je gesehen. Der Einzige, der Gott ist und am Herzen des Vaters ruht, er hat Kunde gebracht.

A Voice in the Wilderness

Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

Und dies ist das Zeugnis des Johannes, als die Juden von Jerusalem aus Priester und Leviten zu ihm sandten mit der Frage: Wer bist du?

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”

Er bekannte und leugnete nicht; er bekannte: Ich bin nicht der Christus.

And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?”
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
And he answered, “No.”

Sie fragten ihn: Was dann? Bist du Elija? Und er sagte: Ich bin es nicht. Bist du der Prophet? Er antwortete: Nein.

Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”

Da sagten sie zu ihm: Wer bist du? Wir müssen denen, die uns gesandt haben, Antwort geben. Was sagst du über dich selbst?

He said: “I am
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
“Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’
as the prophet Isaiah said.”

Er sagte: Ich bin die Stimme eines Rufers in der Wüste: Ebnet den Weg für den Herrn!, wie der Prophet Jesaja gesagt hat.

Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.

Die Abgesandten gehörten zu den Pharisäern.

And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

Sie fragten Johannes und sagten zu ihm: Warum taufst du dann, wenn du nicht der Christus bist, nicht Elija und nicht der Prophet?

John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.

Johannes antwortete ihnen: Ich taufe mit Wasser. Mitten unter euch steht einer, den ihr nicht kennt,

It is He who, coming after me, [i]is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”

der nach mir kommt; ich bin nicht würdig, ihm die Riemen der Sandalen zu lösen.

These things were done in [j]Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Dies geschah in Betanien, jenseits des Jordan, wo Johannes taufte.

The Lamb of God

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Am Tag darauf sah er Jesus auf sich zukommen und sagte: Seht, das Lamm Gottes, das die Sünde der Welt hinwegnimmt!

This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who [k]is preferred before me, for He was before me.’

Er ist es, von dem ich gesagt habe: Nach mir kommt ein Mann, der mir voraus ist, weil er vor mir war.

I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”

Auch ich kannte ihn nicht; aber ich bin gekommen und taufe mit Wasser, damit er Israel offenbart wird.

And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

Und Johannes bezeugte: Ich sah, dass der Geist vom Himmel herabkam wie eine Taube und auf ihm blieb.

I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Auch ich kannte ihn nicht; aber er, der mich gesandt hat, mit Wasser zu taufen, er hat mir gesagt: Auf wen du den Geist herabkommen und auf ihm bleiben siehst, der ist es, der mit dem Heiligen Geist tauft.

And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”

Und ich habe es gesehen und bezeugt: Dieser ist der Sohn Gottes.

The First Disciples

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.

Am Tag darauf stand Johannes wieder dort und zwei seiner Jünger standen bei ihm.

And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”

Als Jesus vorüberging, richtete Johannes seinen Blick auf ihn und sagte: Seht, das Lamm Gottes!

The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Die beiden Jünger hörten, was er sagte, und folgten Jesus.

Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”

Jesus aber wandte sich um, und als er sah, dass sie ihm folgten, sagte er zu ihnen: Was sucht ihr? Sie sagten zu ihm: Rabbi — das heißt übersetzt: Meister — , wo wohnst du?

He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).

Er sagte zu ihnen: Kommt und seht! Da kamen sie mit und sahen, wo er wohnte, und blieben jenen Tag bei ihm; es war um die zehnte Stunde.

One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrus, war einer der beiden, die das Wort des Johannes gehört hatten und Jesus gefolgt waren.

He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the [l]Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ).

Dieser traf zuerst seinen Bruder Simon und sagte zu ihm: Wir haben den Messias gefunden — das heißt übersetzt: Christus.

And he brought him to Jesus.
Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of [m]Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, [n]A Stone).

Er führte ihn zu Jesus. Jesus blickte ihn an und sagte: Du bist Simon, der Sohn des Johannes, du sollst Kephas heißen, das bedeutet: Petrus, Fels.

Philip and Nathanael

The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”

Am Tag darauf wollte Jesus nach Galiläa aufbrechen; da traf er Philippus. Und Jesus sagte zu ihm: Folge mir nach!

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philippus war aus Betsaida, der Stadt des Andreas und Petrus.

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

Philippus traf Natanaël und sagte zu ihm: Wir haben den gefunden, über den Mose im Gesetz und auch die Propheten geschrieben haben: Jesus, den Sohn Josefs, aus Nazaret.

And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”

Da sagte Natanaël zu ihm: Kann aus Nazaret etwas Gutes kommen? Philippus sagte zu ihm: Komm und sieh!

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”

Jesus sah Natanaël auf sich zukommen und sagte über ihn: Sieh, ein echter Israelit, an dem kein Falsch ist.

Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

Natanaël sagte zu ihm: Woher kennst du mich? Jesus antwortete ihm: Schon bevor dich Philippus rief, habe ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum gesehen.

Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”

Natanaël antwortete ihm: Rabbi, du bist der Sohn Gottes, du bist der König von Israel!

Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

Jesus antwortete ihm: Du glaubst, weil ich dir sagte, dass ich dich unter dem Feigenbaum sah; du wirst noch Größeres als dieses sehen.

And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter[o] you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

Und er sprach zu ihm: Amen, amen, ich sage euch: Ihr werdet den Himmel geöffnet und die Engel Gottes auf- und niedersteigen sehen über dem Menschensohn.
