Worship and the Lord’s Supper

Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.

Head Coverings

Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.

Ich lobe euch, dass ihr in allem an mich denkt und an den Überlieferungen festhaltet, wie ich sie euch übergeben habe.

But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

Ihr sollt aber wissen, dass Christus das Haupt eines jeden Mannes ist, der Mann aber das Haupt der Frau und Gott das Haupt Christi.

Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.

Jeder Mann, der betet oder prophetisch redet und dabei sein Haupt bedeckt hat, entehrt sein Haupt.

But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved.

Jede Frau aber, die betet oder prophetisch redet und dabei ihr Haupt nicht verhüllt, entehrt ihr Haupt. Sie unterscheidet sich dann in keiner Weise von einer Geschorenen.

For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

Denn wenn eine Frau sich nicht verhüllt, soll sie sich doch gleich scheren lassen. Ist es aber für eine Frau eine Schande, sich die Haare abschneiden oder sich kahl scheren zu lassen, dann soll sie sich auch verhüllen.

For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man.

Der Mann darf sein Haupt nicht verhüllen, weil er Abbild und Abglanz Gottes ist; die Frau aber ist der Abglanz des Mannes.

For man is not from woman, but woman from man.

Denn der Mann stammt nicht von der Frau, sondern die Frau vom Mann.

Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.

Der Mann wurde auch nicht für die Frau erschaffen, sondern die Frau für den Mann.

For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

Deswegen soll die Frau Acht haben auf ihr Haupt um der Engel willen.

Nevertheless, neither is man independent of woman, nor woman independent of man, in the Lord.

Doch im Herrn gibt es weder die Frau ohne den Mann noch den Mann ohne die Frau.

For as woman came from man, even so man also comes through woman; but all things are from God.

Denn wie die Frau vom Mann stammt, so kommt der Mann durch die Frau zur Welt; alles aber stammt von Gott.

Judge among yourselves. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

Urteilt selber! Gehört es sich, dass eine Frau unverhüllt zu Gott betet?

Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?

Lehrt euch nicht schon die Natur, dass es für den Mann eine Schande,

But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given [a]to her for a covering.

für die Frau aber eine Ehre ist, lange Haare zu tragen? Denn der Frau ist das Haar als Hülle gegeben.

But if anyone seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

Wenn aber einer meint, er müsse darüber streiten: Wir und auch die Gemeinden Gottes kennen einen solchen Brauch nicht.

Conduct at the Lord’s Supper

Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse.

Wenn ich schon Anweisungen gebe: Das kann ich nicht loben, dass ihr nicht zu eurem Nutzen, sondern zu eurem Schaden zusammenkommt.

For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.

Zunächst höre ich, dass es Spaltungen unter euch gibt, wenn ihr als Gemeinde zusammenkommt; zum Teil glaube ich das auch.

For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be [b]recognized among you.

Denn es muss Parteiungen geben unter euch, damit die Bewährten unter euch offenkundig werden.

Therefore when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper.

Wenn ihr euch versammelt, ist das kein Essen des Herrenmahls;

For in eating, each one takes his own supper ahead of others; and one is hungry and another is drunk.

denn jeder nimmt beim Essen sein eigenes Mahl vorweg und dann hungert der eine, während der andere betrunken ist.

What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and shame [c]those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you.

Könnt ihr denn nicht zu Hause essen und trinken? Oder verachtet ihr die Kirche Gottes? Wollt ihr jene demütigen, die nichts haben? Was soll ich dazu sagen? Soll ich euch etwa loben? In diesem Fall kann ich euch nicht loben.

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;

Denn ich habe vom Herrn empfangen, was ich euch dann überliefert habe: Jesus, der Herr, nahm in der Nacht, in der er ausgeliefert wurde, Brot,

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, [d]“Take, eat; this is My body which is [e]broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

sprach das Dankgebet, brach das Brot und sagte: Das ist mein Leib für euch. Tut dies zu meinem Gedächtnis!

In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Ebenso nahm er nach dem Mahl den Kelch und sagte: Dieser Kelch ist der Neue Bund in meinem Blut. Tut dies, sooft ihr daraus trinkt, zu meinem Gedächtnis!

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Denn sooft ihr von diesem Brot esst und aus dem Kelch trinkt, verkündet ihr den Tod des Herrn, bis er kommt.

Examine Yourself

Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and [f]blood of the Lord.

Wer also unwürdig von dem Brot isst und aus dem Kelch des Herrn trinkt, macht sich schuldig am Leib und am Blut des Herrn.

But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

Jeder soll sich selbst prüfen; erst dann soll er von dem Brot essen und aus dem Kelch trinken.

For he who eats and drinks [g]in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the [h]Lord’s body.

Denn wer davon isst und trinkt, ohne den Leib zu unterscheiden, der zieht sich das Gericht zu, indem er isst und trinkt.

For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many [i]sleep.

Deswegen sind unter euch viele schwach und krank und nicht wenige sind schon entschlafen.

For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

Gingen wir mit uns selbst ins Gericht, dann würden wir nicht gerichtet.

But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

Doch wenn wir jetzt vom Herrn gerichtet werden, dann ist es eine Zurechtweisung, damit wir nicht zusammen mit der Welt verdammt werden.

Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.

Wenn ihr also zum Mahl zusammenkommt, meine Brüder und Schwestern, wartet aufeinander!

But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set in order when I come.

Wer Hunger hat, soll zu Hause essen; sonst wird euch die Zusammenkunft zum Gericht. Weitere Anordnungen werde ich treffen, wenn ich komme.
