Israel’s War with the Benjamites
So all the children of Israel came out, from Dan to Beersheba, as well as from the land of Gilead, and the congregation gathered together as one man before the Lord at Mizpah.

And the leaders of all the people, all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand foot soldiers who drew the sword.

(Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.)
Then the children of Israel said, “Tell us, how did this wicked deed happen?”

So the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, “My concubine and I went into Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin, to spend the night.

And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me, but instead they ravished my concubine so that she died.

Look! All of you are children of Israel; give your advice and counsel here and now!”

So all the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, nor will any turn back to his house;

but now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: We will go up against it by lot.

We will take ten men out of every hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to make provisions for the people, that when they come to Gibeah in Benjamin, they may repay all the vileness that they have done in Israel.”
Und zwar nehmen wir aus allen Stämmen Israels jeweils zehn Männer von hundert und hundert von tausend und tausend von zehntausend. Sie sollen Verpflegung für das Volk holen, damit sie mit Geba in Benjamin, wenn sie dorthin kommen, machen, was es nach der Schandtat verdient, die es mitten in Israel begangen hat.
So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united together as one man.
So versammelten sich alle Männer Israels, geschlossen wie ein Mann, bei der Stadt.
Then the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has occurred among you?
Und die Stämme Israels schickten Boten durch das ganze Gebiet des Stammes Benjamin und ließen sagen: Was ist das für eine üble Tat, die bei euch geschehen ist?

Instead, the children of Benjamin gathered together from their cities to Gibeah, to go to battle against the children of Israel.
Sie kamen vielmehr aus ihren Städten bei Gibea zusammen, um gegen die Israeliten in den Kampf zu ziehen.
And from their cities at that time the children of Benjamin numbered twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered seven hundred select men.
Als man an jenem Tag die Benjaminiter aus den Städten musterte, zählte man sechsundzwanzigtausend mit Schwertern bewaffnete Männer, ohne die Einwohner von Gibea, von denen siebenhundert auserlesene Männer gemustert wurden.
Among all this people were seven hundred select men who were left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair’s breadth and not miss.
Unter diesem ganzen Volk befanden sich siebenhundert besonders auserlesene Männer; sie waren alle Linkshänder und konnten einen Stein haargenau schleudern, ohne je das Ziel zu verfehlen.
Now besides Benjamin, the men of Israel numbered four hundred thousand men who drew the sword; all of these were men of war.
Auch die Männer Israels ließen sich mustern. Es waren ohne die Benjaminiter vierhunderttausend mit dem Schwert bewaffnete Männer, alles tüchtige Krieger.
Sie brachen auf, zogen nach Bet-El hinauf und befragten Gott. Die Israeliten sagten: Wer von uns soll zuerst gegen die Benjaminiter in den Kampf ziehen? Der HERR antwortete: Zuerst Juda.
So the children of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah.
Die Israeliten brachen am Morgen auf und bezogen ihr Lager gegenüber Gibea.
And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel put themselves in battle array to fight against them at Gibeah.
Dann rückten die Männer Israels zum Kampf gegen die Benjaminiter aus und stellten sich ihnen gegenüber vor Gibea zum Kampf auf.
Then the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and on that day cut down to the ground twenty-two thousand men of the Israelites.
Die Benjaminiter rückten von Gibea aus und streckten an diesem Tag zweiundzwanzigtausend Israeliten zu Boden.
And the people, that is, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and again formed the battle line at the place where they had put themselves in array on the first day.
Doch das Volk, die Männer Israels, fassten wieder Mut und stellten sich noch einmal zum Kampf auf, am gleichen Ort, wo sie sich am ersten Tag aufgestellt hatten.
Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, “Shall I again draw near for battle against the children of my brother Benjamin?”
And the Lord said, “Go up against him.”
And the Lord said, “Go up against him.”
Die Israeliten zogen hinauf und weinten bis zum Abend vor dem HERRN. Sie fragten den HERRN: Soll ich noch einmal zum Kampf gegen die Söhne meines Bruders Benjamin antreten? Der HERR antwortete: Zieht hinauf gegen ihn!
So the children of Israel approached the children of Benjamin on the second day.
Als nun die Israeliten am zweiten Tag gegen die Benjaminiter vorrückten,
And Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah on the second day, and cut down to the ground eighteen thousand more of the children of Israel; all these drew the sword.
zogen ihnen die Benjaminiter am zweiten Tag von Gibea aus entgegen und streckten noch einmal achtzehntausend Männer aus Israel zu Boden, die alle mit Schwertern bewaffnet waren.
Darauf zogen alle Israeliten, das ganze Volk, hinauf und kamen nach Bet-El. Dort saßen sie klagend vor dem HERRN; sie fasteten an jenem Tag bis zum Abend und brachten dem HERRN Brandopfer und Heilsopfer dar.
So the children of Israel inquired of the Lord (the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
Dann befragten die Israeliten den HERRN. In Bet-El stand nämlich in jenen Tagen die Bundeslade Gottes
and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, “Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?”
And the Lord said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
And the Lord said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
und Pinhas, der Sohn Eleasars, des Sohnes Aarons, stand in jenen Tagen vor ihm. Die Israeliten sagten: Soll ich noch einmal ausrücken zum Kampf mit den Söhnen meines Bruders Benjamin oder soll ich es sein lassen? Der HERR antwortete: Zieht hinauf! Denn morgen gebe ich ihn in deine Hand.
Then Israel set men in ambush all around Gibeah.
Darauf legten die Israeliten rings um Gibea Leute in den Hinterhalt.
And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in battle array against Gibeah as at the other times.
Am dritten Tag zogen die Israeliten gegen die Benjaminiter hinauf und stellten sich, wie die beiden vorigen Male, bei Gibea auf.
So the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city. They began to strike down and kill some of the people, as at the other times, in the highways (one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah) and in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
Die Benjaminiter rückten gegen das Volk aus, wurden aber so von der Stadt fortgelockt; sie begannen, wie die beiden vorigen Male, auf freiem Feld einige vom Volk zu erschlagen, an den Straßen, von denen die eine nach Bet-El, die andere nach Gibea hinaufführt, im Ganzen etwa dreißig Mann.
And the children of Benjamin said, “They are defeated before us, as at first.”
But the children of Israel said, “Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.”
But the children of Israel said, “Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways.”
Die Benjaminiter dachten: Sie werden von uns geschlagen wie beim ersten Mal. Die Israeliten aber hatten gesagt: Wir wollen fliehen und ihn von der Stadt weg zu den Straßen hinlocken.
So all the men of Israel rose from their place and put themselves in battle array at Baal Tamar. Then Israel’s men in ambush burst forth from their position in the plain of Geba.
Alle Männer Israels zogen sich also von ihrem Platz zurück und stellten sich bei Baal-Tamar wieder auf, während die Israeliten, die im Hinterhalt lagen, von ihrer Stellung aus der Lichtung von Geba hervorbrachen.
Zehntausend ausgewählte Männer aus ganz Israel rückten gegenüber Gibea heran. Es gab einen schweren Kampf; die Benjaminiter erkannten nicht, dass das Unheil sie ereilte.
Der HERR schlug die Benjaminiter vor Israel und die Israeliten machten an jenem Tag fünfundzwanzigtausendundeinhundert Mann aus Benjamin nieder, alles mit Schwertern bewaffnete Krieger.
So the children of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel had given ground to the Benjamites, because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah.
Die Benjaminiter sahen, dass sie geschlagen waren. Die Israeliten gaben also Benjamin Gelände preis; denn sie vertrauten auf den Hinterhalt, den sie bei Gibea gelegt hatten.
And the men in ambush quickly rushed upon Gibeah; the men in ambush spread out and struck the whole city with the edge of the sword.
Die Leute im Hinterhalt stürmten nun schnell auf Gibea los. Sie kamen aus dem Hinterhalt hervor und erschlugen alles in der Stadt mit scharfem Schwert.
Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of smoke rise up from the city,
Die Männer Israels hatten mit den Männern im Hinterhalt verabredet, dass sie eine Rauchwolke aus der Stadt aufsteigen lassen sollten.
Die Männer Israels machten kehrt im Kampf. Benjamin hatte begonnen, etwa dreißig Israeliten zu erschlagen, denn sie sagten: Sicher wird Israel von uns völlig geschlagen wie beim ersten Kampf!
But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and there was the whole city going up in smoke to heaven.
Da begann das Signal aus der Stadt aufzusteigen, eine Rauchsäule. Die Benjaminiter wandten sich um und siehe, der Brand der ganzen Stadt war wie ein Opfer zum Himmel emporgestiegen!
And when the men of Israel turned back, the men of Benjamin panicked, for they saw that disaster had come upon them.
Die Männer Israels hatten kehrtgemacht, da gerieten die Benjaminiter in Verwirrung; denn sie erkannten, dass das Unglück sie ereilt hatte.
Sie wandten sich von den Männern Israels ab auf die Wüste zu. Da konnten sie aber dem Kampf nicht entrinnen. Denn die Israeliten brachen aus der Stadt hervor und machten die Benjaminiter in ihrer Mitte nieder.
They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, and easily trampled them down as far as the front of Gibeah toward the east.
Sie umzingelten Benjamin, sie ließen ihn bis Menuha verfolgen, sie warfen sie bei Gibea von Osten her nieder.
And eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell; all these were men of valor.
Achtzehntausend Mann aus Benjamin fielen, alles kampferprobte Männer.
Sie wandten sich also um und flohen auf die Wüste zu, nach Sela-Rimmon. Die Israeliten hielten Nachlese und vernichteten auf den Straßen noch einmal fünftausend Mann. Bei der Verfolgung, die sich bis nach Gidom hinzog, erschlugen sie nochmals zweitausend von ihnen.
Die Gesamtzahl der Gefallenen aus Benjamin betrug an diesem Tag fünfundzwanzigtausend, lauter mit dem Schwert bewaffnete Krieger.
But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they stayed at the rock of Rimmon for four months.
Nur sechshundert Mann konnten sich absetzen und in die Wüste nach Sela-Rimmon fliehen; sie blieben vier Monate in Sela-Rimmon.
And the men of Israel turned back against the children of Benjamin, and struck them down with the edge of the sword — from every city, men and beasts, all who were found. They also set fire to all the cities they came to.
Die Männer Israels aber kehrten zu den Benjaminitern zurück und erschlugen alles, was zu finden war, mit scharfem Schwert, von der männlichen Stadtbevölkerung bis zum Vieh. Ebenso steckten sie alle Städte, die sie finden konnten, in Brand.
