David said, “I am going to show loyalty to Hanun just as his father, Nahash, was always loyal to me.” So David sent ambassadors to express sympathy to Hanun about his father’s death.

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, their master, “Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the city so they can come in and conquer it!”
sagten die Fürsten der Ammoniter zu Hanun, ihrem Herrn: Will David wirklich deinen Vater vor deinen Augen ehren, weil er Leute schickt, die dir sein Beileid aussprechen sollen? Hat David seine Diener nicht viel eher zu dir geschickt, um die Stadt zu durchforschen und auszukundschaften und sie dann verwüsten zu lassen?
So Hanun seized David’s ambassadors and shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their robes at the buttocks, and sent them back to David in shame.
Darauf ließ Hanun die Diener Davids festnehmen, ihnen die Hälfte des Bartes abscheren und ihnen die Kleider zur Hälfte abschneiden, bis zum Gesäß herauf. So schickte er sie weg.
When David heard what had happened, he sent messengers to tell the men, “Stay at Jericho until your beards grow out, and then come back.” For they felt deep shame because of their appearance.
Als man David das meldete, schickte er ihnen jemand entgegen und ließ ihnen, weil sie so schwer geschändet waren, sagen: Bleibt in Jericho und kehrt erst zurück, wenn euer Bart wieder gewachsen ist!
When the people of Ammon realized how seriously they had angered David, they sent and hired 20,000 Aramean foot soldiers from the lands of Beth-rehob and Zobah, 1,000 from the king of Maacah, and 12,000 from the land of Tob.
Als die Ammoniter merkten, dass sie sich bei David verhasst gemacht hatten, schickten sie Gesandte und warben die Aramäer von Bet-Rehob und von Zoba an, zwanzigtausend Mann Fußvolk, außerdem den König von Maacha mit tausend Mann und die Leute von Tob mit zwölftausend Mann.
When David heard about this, he sent Joab and all his warriors to fight them.
David erfuhr davon und schickte Joab mit dem ganzen Heer, allen kriegstüchtigen Männern, hin.
The Ammonite troops came out and drew up their battle lines at the entrance of the city gate, while the Arameans from Zobah and Rehob and the men from Tob and Maacah positioned themselves to fight in the open fields.
Die Ammoniter rückten aus und stellten sich vor dem Stadttor zum Kampf auf, während die Aramäer von Zoba und Rehob und die Leute von Tob und Maacha jeweils für sich draußen auf dem freien Feld standen.
When Joab saw that he would have to fight on both the front and the rear, he chose some of Israel’s elite troops and placed them under his personal command to fight the Arameans in the fields.
Als Joab sah, dass ihm ein Angriff von vorn und von hinten drohte, traf er eine Auswahl aus den Kerntruppen Israels und stellte sie gegen die Aramäer auf.
He left the rest of the army under the command of his brother Abishai, who was to attack the Ammonites.
Den Rest des Heeres unterstellte er seinem Bruder Abischai, damit er sie den Ammonitern gegenüber aufstelle.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help me,” Joab told his brother. “And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will come and help you.
Joab sagte: Wenn die Aramäer stärker sind als ich, dann komm du mir zu Hilfe! Wenn die Ammoniter stärker sind als du, dann werde ich dir zu Hilfe kommen.
Be courageous! Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. May the LORD’s will be done.”
Sei tapfer! Wir wollen mutig für unser Volk und für die Städte unseres Gottes kämpfen. Der HERR aber wird tun, was er für recht hält.
When Joab and his troops attacked, the Arameans began to run away.
Da griff Joab mit seinen Leuten die Aramäer an und diese ergriffen die Flucht vor ihm.
And when the Ammonites saw the Arameans running, they ran from Abishai and retreated into the city. After the battle was over, Joab returned to Jerusalem.
Als die Ammoniter sahen, dass die Aramäer flohen, ergriffen auch sie die Flucht vor Abischai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Joab kehrte nach dem Kampf gegen die Ammoniter nach Jerusalem zurück.
The Arameans now realized that they were no match for Israel. So when they regrouped,
Die Aramäer sahen, dass sie von Israel geschlagen waren, aber sie sammelten sich wieder.
Hadad-Eser schickte Boten und ließ die Aramäer, die jenseits des Stroms wohnten, ausrücken. Sie kamen nach Helam, an ihrer Spitze Schobach, der Oberbefehlshaber Hadad-Esers.
When David heard what was happening, he mobilized all Israel, crossed the Jordan River, and led the army to Helam. The Arameans positioned themselves in battle formation and fought against David.
Als man das David meldete, versammelte er ganz Israel, überschritt den Jordan und kam nach Helam. Die Aramäer nahmen David gegenüber Aufstellung und eröffneten den Kampf gegen ihn.
Doch sie mussten vor den Israeliten fliehen. David vernichtete siebenhundert aramäische Kriegswagen und tötete vierzigtausend Reiter. Auch Schobach, den Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres, schlug er nieder, sodass er an Ort und Stelle starb.
When all the kings allied with Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they surrendered to Israel and became their subjects. After that, the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites.
Die Könige, die Hadad-Esers Vasallen waren, sahen nun ein, dass sie von den Israeliten besiegt waren. Sie schlossen Frieden mit den Israeliten und unterwarfen sich ihnen. Von da an fürchteten sich die Aramäer, den Ammonitern noch weiter zu helfen.
