God’s Mercy on Israel
I ask, then, has God rejected his own people, the nation of Israel? Of course not! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham and a member of the tribe of Benjamin.

No, God has not rejected his own people, whom he chose from the very beginning. Do you realize what the Scriptures say about this? Elijah the prophet complained to God about the people of Israel and said,
Gott hat sein Volk nicht verstoßen, das er im Voraus erwählt hat. Oder wisst ihr nicht, was die Schrift von Elija sagt, wie er vor Gott gegen Israel Klage führt?
Herr, sie haben deine Propheten getötet und deine Altäre zerstört. Ich allein bin übrig geblieben und nun trachten sie auch mir nach dem Leben.
Aber was sagt ihm der Gottesspruch? Ich habe siebentausend Männer für mich übrig gelassen, die ihr Knie nicht vor Baal gebeugt haben.
Ebenso gibt es auch in der gegenwärtigen Zeit einen Rest, der aus Gnade erwählt ist —

So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have — the ones God has chosen — but the hearts of the rest were hardened.
Was bedeutet das nun? Was Israel erstrebt, das hat es nicht erlangt, aber der erwählte Rest hat es erlangt; die Übrigen aber wurden verstockt,
wie geschrieben steht: Gott gab ihnen einen Geist der Betäubung, Augen, die nicht sehen, und Ohren, die nicht hören, bis zum heutigen Tag.
Likewise, David said,
“Let their bountiful table become a snare,
a trap that makes them think all is well.
Let their blessings cause them to stumble,
and let them get what they deserve.

Did God’s people stumble and fall beyond recovery? Of course not! They were disobedient, so God made salvation available to the Gentiles. But he wanted his own people to become jealous and claim it for themselves.
Nun frage ich: Sind sie etwa gestrauchelt, damit sie zu Fall kommen? Keineswegs! Vielmehr kam durch ihren Fehltritt das Heil zu den Heiden, um sie selbst eifersüchtig zu machen.
Now if the Gentiles were enriched because the people of Israel turned down God’s offer of salvation, think how much greater a blessing the world will share when they finally accept it.
Wenn aber ihr Fehltritt Reichtum für die Welt bedeutet und ihre geringe Zahl Reichtum für die Heiden, um wie viel mehr ihre Vollzahl!
I am saying all this especially for you Gentiles. God has appointed me as the apostle to the Gentiles. I stress this,
Euch aber, den Heiden, sage ich: Gerade als Apostel der Heiden preise ich meinen Dienst,
for I want somehow to make the people of Israel jealous of what you Gentiles have, so I might save some of them.
weil ich hoffe, die Angehörigen meines Volkes eifersüchtig zu machen und wenigstens einige von ihnen zu retten.
For since their rejection meant that God offered salvation to the rest of the world, their acceptance will be even more wonderful. It will be life for those who were dead!
Denn wenn schon ihre Zurückweisung für die Welt Versöhnung bedeutet, was wird dann ihre Annahme anderes sein als Leben aus den Toten?
And since Abraham and the other patriarchs were holy, their descendants will also be holy — just as the entire batch of dough is holy because the portion given as an offering is holy. For if the roots of the tree are holy, the branches will be, too.
Ist aber die Erstlingsgabe vom Teig heilig, so ist es auch der ganze Teig; und ist die Wurzel heilig, so sind es auch die Zweige.
But some of these branches from Abraham’s tree — some of the people of Israel — have been broken off. And you Gentiles, who were branches from a wild olive tree, have been grafted in. So now you also receive the blessing God has promised Abraham and his children, sharing in the rich nourishment from the root of God’s special olive tree.
Wenn aber einige Zweige herausgebrochen wurden, du aber als Zweig vom wilden Ölbaum mitten unter ihnen eingepfropft wurdest und damit Anteil erhieltest an der kraftvollen Wurzel des edlen Ölbaums,
But you must not brag about being grafted in to replace the branches that were broken off. You are just a branch, not the root.
so rühme dich nicht gegen die anderen Zweige! Wenn du dich aber rühmst, sollst du wissen: Nicht du trägst die Wurzel, sondern die Wurzel trägt dich.
“Well,” you may say, “those branches were broken off to make room for me.”
Nun wirst du sagen: Die Zweige wurden doch herausgebrochen, damit ich eingepfropft werde.
Yes, but remember — those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen.
Gewiss, wegen des Unglaubens wurden sie herausgebrochen. Du aber stehst durch den Glauben. Sei daher nicht überheblich, sondern fürchte dich!
Hat nämlich Gott die Zweige, die von Natur zum edlen Baum gehören, nicht verschont, so wird er auch dich nicht verschonen.
Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.
Siehe nun die Güte Gottes und seine Strenge! Die Strenge gegen jene, die gefallen sind, Gottes Güte aber gegen dich, sofern du in seiner Güte bleibst; sonst wirst auch du herausgehauen werden.
And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree.
Ebenso werden auch jene, wenn sie nicht im Unglauben bleiben, wieder eingepfropft werden; denn Gott hat die Macht, sie wieder einzupfropfen.
You, by nature, were a branch cut from a wild olive tree. So if God was willing to do something contrary to nature by grafting you into his cultivated tree, he will be far more eager to graft the original branches back into the tree where they belong.
Wenn du nämlich aus dem von Natur wilden Ölbaum herausgehauen und gegen die Natur in den edlen Ölbaum eingepfropft wurdest, dann werden erst recht sie als die von Natur zugehörigen Zweige ihrem eigenen Ölbaum wieder eingepfropft werden.
Denn ich will euch, Brüder und Schwestern, nicht in Unkenntnis über dieses Geheimnis lassen, damit ihr euch nicht selbst für klug haltet: Verstockung liegt auf einem Teil Israels, bis die Vollzahl der Heiden hereingekommen ist,
und so wird ganz Israel gerettet werden, wie geschrieben steht: Es wird kommen aus Zion der Retter, er wird alle Gottlosigkeit von Jakob entfernen.
Und das ist der Bund, den ich für sie gestiftet habe, wenn ich ihre Sünden hinwegnehme.
Many of the people of Israel are now enemies of the Good News, and this benefits you Gentiles. Yet they are still the people he loves because he chose their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Vom Evangelium her gesehen sind sie Feinde, und das um euretwillen; von ihrer Erwählung her gesehen aber sind sie Geliebte, und das um der Väter willen.
For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.
Denn unwiderruflich sind die Gnadengaben und die Berufung Gottes.
Once, you Gentiles were rebels against God, but when the people of Israel rebelled against him, God was merciful to you instead.
Denn wie ihr einst Gott ungehorsam wart, jetzt aber infolge ihres Ungehorsams Erbarmen gefunden habt,
so sind auch sie infolge des Erbarmens, das ihr gefunden habt, ungehorsam geworden, damit jetzt auch sie Erbarmen finden.
For God has imprisoned everyone in disobedience so he could have mercy on everyone.
Denn Gott hat alle in den Ungehorsam eingeschlossen, um sich aller zu erbarmen.
Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!
O Tiefe des Reichtums, der Weisheit und der Erkenntnis Gottes! Wie unergründlich sind seine Entscheidungen, wie unerforschlich seine Wege!
Denn wer hat die Gedanken des Herrn erkannt? Oder wer ist sein Ratgeber gewesen?
Oder wer hat ihm etwas gegeben, sodass Gott ihm etwas zurückgeben müsste?
