Jephthah Becomes Israel’s Judge
Now Jephthah of Gilead was a great warrior. He was the son of Gilead, but his mother was a prostitute.

Jiftach, der Gileaditer, war ein tapferer Held; er war der Sohn einer Dirne und Gilead zeugte Jiftach.
Gilead’s wife also had several sons, and when these half brothers grew up, they chased Jephthah off the land. “You will not get any of our father’s inheritance,” they said, “for you are the son of a prostitute.”
Auch Gileads Ehefrau gebar ihm Söhne. Als nun die Söhne der Ehefrau herangewachsen waren, jagten sie Jiftach fort und sagten zu ihm: Du sollst im Haus unseres Vaters nicht erben; denn du bist der Sohn einer anderen Frau.
So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of Tob. Soon he had a band of worthless rebels following him.
Da floh Jiftach vor seinen Brüdern. Er ließ sich im Land Tob nieder und Männer, die nichts zu verlieren hatten, scharten sich um Jiftach und zogen mit ihm aus.
At about this time, the Ammonites began their war against Israel.
Nach einiger Zeit führten die Ammoniter Krieg mit Israel.
When the Ammonites attacked, the elders of Gilead sent for Jephthah in the land of Tob.
Als nun die Ammoniter mit Israel Krieg führten, machten sich die Ältesten Gileads auf den Weg, um Jiftach aus dem Land Tob zu holen.
The elders said, “Come and be our commander! Help us fight the Ammonites!”
Sie sagten zu Jiftach: Komm, sei unser Anführer, damit wir gegen die Ammoniter kämpfen können!
But Jephthah said to them, “Aren’t you the ones who hated me and drove me from my father’s house? Why do you come to me now when you’re in trouble?”
Jiftach erwiderte den Ältesten Gileads: Habt ihr mich nicht gehasst und aus dem Haus meines Vaters verjagt? Warum kommt ihr jetzt zu mir, da ihr in Bedrängnis seid?
“Because we need you,” the elders replied. “If you lead us in battle against the Ammonites, we will make you ruler over all the people of Gilead.”
Die Ältesten Gileads antworteten Jiftach: Eben darum haben wir uns jetzt dir wieder zugewandt. Geh mit uns und kämpfe gegen die Ammoniter; dann wirst du für uns das Haupt aller Bewohner Gileads sein.
Jephthah said to the elders, “Let me get this straight. If I come with you and if the LORD gives me victory over the Ammonites, will you really make me ruler over all the people?”
Jiftach entgegnete den Ältesten Gileads: Wenn ihr mich zum Kampf gegen die Ammoniter zurückholt und der HERR sie mir preisgibt, will auch ich für euch das Haupt sein!
“The LORD is our witness,” the elders replied. “We promise to do whatever you say.”
Die Ältesten Gileads antworteten Jiftach: Der HERR soll uns Ohrenzeuge sein: Ganz gewiss werden wir genau nach deinem Wort handeln.
So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their ruler and commander of the army. At Mizpah, in the presence of the LORD, Jephthah repeated what he had said to the elders.
Daraufhin ging Jiftach mit den Ältesten Gileads und das Volk setzte ihn zum Haupt und Anführer über sich ein. Jiftach aber brachte in Mizpa alle seine Angelegenheiten vor den HERRN.
Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of Ammon, asking, “Why have you come out to fight against my land?”
Danach schickte Jiftach Boten zum König der Ammoniter und ließ ihn fragen: Was haben du und ich miteinander zu schaffen, dass du herangerückt bist, um gegen mein Land Krieg zu führen?
The king of Ammon answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When the Israelites came out of Egypt, they stole my land from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River and all the way to the Jordan. Now then, give back the land peaceably.”
Der König der Ammoniter antwortete den Boten Jiftachs: Israel hat mir mein Land zwischen dem Arnon und dem Jabbok, bis hin zum Jordan, weggenommen, als es aus Ägypten heraufzog. Gib es jetzt freiwillig wieder zurück!
Jephthah sent this message back to the Ammonite king:
Darauf schickte Jiftach noch einmal Boten zum König der Ammoniter
“This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not steal any land from Moab or Ammon.
und ließ ihm sagen: So spricht Jiftach: Israel hat das Land Moabs und das Land der Ammoniter nicht weggenommen.
Als Israel aus Ägypten heraufzog, wanderte es durch die Wüste bis zum Roten Meer und kam nach Kadesch.
they sent messengers to the king of Edom asking for permission to pass through his land. But their request was denied. Then they asked the king of Moab for similar permission, but he wouldn’t let them pass through either. So the people of Israel stayed in Kadesh.
Da schickte Israel Boten zum König von Edom und ließ ihm sagen: Ich möchte durch dein Land ziehen. Aber der König von Edom hörte nicht darauf. Auch zum König von Moab schickten sie, aber auch er wollte nicht. Deshalb blieb Israel in Kadesch.
“Finally, they went around Edom and Moab through the wilderness. They traveled along Moab’s eastern border and camped on the other side of the Arnon River. But they never once crossed the Arnon River into Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.
Es zog dann durch die Wüste, umging das Land Edoms und das Land Moabs und kam so in das Gebiet östlich vom Land Moabs. Sie schlugen jenseits des Arnon ihr Lager auf, kamen also gar nicht in das Gebiet Moabs; denn der Arnon ist die Grenze Moabs.
“Then Israel sent messengers to King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled from Heshbon, asking for permission to cross through his land to get to their destination.
Dann sandte Israel Boten zu Sihon, dem König der Amoriter, dem König von Heschbon, und ließ ihm sagen: Wir möchten durch dein Gebiet bis zu meinem Ort ziehen.
But King Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his land. Instead, he mobilized his army at Jahaz and attacked them.
Sihon aber traute Israel nicht, dass es nur durch sein Gebiet durchziehen wollte. Sihon sammelte sein ganzes Volk und sie schlugen in Jahaz ihr Lager auf und er eröffnete den Kampf gegen Israel.
But the LORD, the God of Israel, gave his people victory over King Sihon. So Israel took control of all the land of the Amorites, who lived in that region,
Der HERR, der Gott Israels, aber gab Sihon und sein ganzes Volk in die Hand Israels. Israel schlug sie und nahm das ganze Land der Amoriter, der Bewohner jenes Landes, in Besitz.
from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River, and from the eastern wilderness to the Jordan.
So nahmen sie das ganze Land der Amoriter vom Arnon bis zum Jabbok und von der Wüste bis zum Jordan in Besitz.
“So you see, it was the LORD, the God of Israel, who took away the land from the Amorites and gave it to Israel. Why, then, should we give it back to you?
Der HERR, der Gott Israels, hat also die Amoriter vor seinem Volk Israel vertrieben. Und du willst es nun aus seinem Besitz vertreiben?
You keep whatever your god Chemosh gives you, and we will keep whatever the LORD our God gives us.
Ist es nicht so: Wen Kemosch, dein Gott, vertreibt, dessen Besitz nimmst du, und wen immer der HERR, unser Gott, vor unseren Augen vertreibt, dessen Besitz nehmen wir.
Are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he try to make a case against Israel for disputed land? Did he go to war against them?
Bist du denn wirklich besser als der Moabiterkönig Balak, der Sohn Zippors? Hat er denn mit Israel einen Streit oder einen Krieg angefangen?
“Israel has been living here for 300 years, inhabiting Heshbon and its surrounding settlements, all the way to Aroer and its settlements, and in all the towns along the Arnon River. Why have you made no effort to recover it before now?
Als Israel dreihundert Jahre lang in Heschbon und seinen Tochterstädten saß, in Aroër und seinen Tochterstädten und in allen Städten, die zu beiden Seiten des Arnon liegen, warum habt ihr diese Städte nicht in jener Zeit an euch gerissen?
Therefore, I have not sinned against you. Rather, you have wronged me by attacking me. Let the LORD, who is judge, decide today which of us is right — Israel or Ammon.”
Ich habe dir kein Unrecht getan, aber du willst mir Böses antun, indem du den Kampf gegen mich eröffnest. Der HERR, der Richter, möge heute richten zwischen den Israeliten und den Ammonitern.
But the king of Ammon paid no attention to Jephthah’s message.
Doch der König der Ammoniter hörte nicht auf die Botschaft, die ihm Jiftach schickte.
Jephthah’s Vow
At that time the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he went throughout the land of Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and from there he led an army against the Ammonites.
Da kam der Geist des HERRN über Jiftach und Jiftach zog durch Gilead und Manasse und er zog nach Mizpa in Gilead und von Mizpa in Gilead zog er gegen die Ammoniter.
And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD. He said, “If you give me victory over the Ammonites,

I will give to the LORD whatever comes out of my house to meet me when I return in triumph. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.”

So Jephthah led his army against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave him victory.
Darauf zog Jiftach gegen die Ammoniter in den Kampf und der HERR gab sie in seine Hand.
He crushed the Ammonites, devastating about twenty towns from Aroer to an area near Minnith and as far away as Abel-keramim. In this way Israel defeated the Ammonites.
Er schlug sie von Aroër bis dahin, wo man nach Minit kommt, zwanzig Städte, und bis hin nach Abel-Keramim. So mussten sich die Ammoniter vor den Israeliten beugen.
When Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, his daughter came out to meet him, playing on a tambourine and dancing for joy. She was his one and only child; he had no other sons or daughters.
Als Jiftach nach Mizpa zu seinem Haus kam, siehe, da kam ihm seine Tochter entgegen mit Handtrommeln und Reigentänzen. Sie war sein einziges Kind; er hatte weder einen Sohn noch eine andere Tochter.
When he saw her, he tore his clothes in anguish. “Oh, my daughter!” he cried out. “You have completely destroyed me! You’ve brought disaster on me! For I have made a vow to the LORD, and I cannot take it back.”
Und es geschah, sobald er sie sah, zerriss er seine Kleider und sagte: Weh, meine Tochter! Du hast mich tief gebeugt und du gehörst zu denen, die mich ins Unglück stürzen. Habe ich doch dem HERRN gegenüber meinen Mund zu weit aufgetan und kann nun nicht mehr zurück.
And she said, “Father, if you have made a vow to the LORD, you must do to me what you have vowed, for the LORD has given you a great victory over your enemies, the Ammonites.
Sie erwiderte ihm: Mein Vater, du hast dem HERRN gegenüber deinen Mund zu weit aufgetan. Tu mit mir, wie es aus deinem Mund hervorgegangen ist, nachdem dir der HERR Rache an deinen Feinden, den Ammonitern, verschafft hat!
But first let me do this one thing: Let me go up and roam in the hills and weep with my friends for two months, because I will die a virgin.”
Und sie sagte zu ihrem Vater: Nur das eine soll mir gewährt werden: Lass mir noch zwei Monate Zeit, damit ich in die Berge hinabgehe und zusammen mit meinen Freundinnen meine Jungfrauschaft beweine.
“You may go,” Jephthah said. And he sent her away for two months. She and her friends went into the hills and wept because she would never have children.
Er entgegnete: Geh! und ließ sie für zwei Monate fort. Und sie ging mit ihren Freundinnen hin und beweinte in den Bergen ihre Jungfrauschaft.
When she returned home, her father kept the vow he had made, and she died a virgin.
