Gideon Becomes Israel’s Judge

Die Israeliten taten, was dem HERRN missfiel. Da ließ er die Midianiter sieben Jahre lang über sie herrschen.
The Midianites were so cruel that the Israelites made hiding places for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.
Die Israeliten wurden von ihnen so schwer unterdrückt, dass sie sich in Felsklüften, in Höhlen und auf den Bergen verstecken mussten.
Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, marauders from Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east would attack Israel,

camping in the land and destroying crops as far away as Gaza. They left the Israelites with nothing to eat, taking all the sheep, goats, cattle, and donkeys.

These enemy hordes, coming with their livestock and tents, were as thick as locusts; they arrived on droves of camels too numerous to count. And they stayed until the land was stripped bare.
Mit ihren Herden und Zelten fielen sie wie ein Heuschreckenschwarm über Israel her. Niemand konnte sie und ihre Kamele zählen. So drangen sie immer wieder ins Land ein und verwüsteten es.
So Israel was reduced to starvation by the Midianites. Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD for help.

the LORD sent a prophet to the Israelites. He said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of slavery in Egypt.

I rescued you from the Egyptians and from all who oppressed you. I drove out your enemies and gave you their land.
Aus der Gewalt der Ägypter und aller anderen Unterdrücker habe ich euch gerettet. Ich vertrieb sie und gab euch ihr Land.
I told you, ‘I am the LORD your God. You must not worship the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you now live.’ But you have not listened to me.”
Damals sagte ich zu euch: Ich bin der HERR, euer Gott. Verehrt nicht die Götter der Amoriter, in deren Land ihr wohnt. — Aber ihr habt nicht auf mich gehört!«
Then the angel of the LORD came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites.
Der Engel des HERRN kam nach Ofra und setzte sich unter eine Eiche auf dem Grundstück, das Joasch gehörte, einem Mann aus der Sippe Abiëser. Joaschs Sohn Gideon drosch gerade Weizen in einer Kelter, um das Getreide vor den Midianitern in Sicherheit zu bringen.
The angel of the LORD appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the LORD is with you!”

“Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ‘The LORD brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the LORD has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.”
Gideon erwiderte: »Ach, mein Herr, wenn Gott uns wirklich beisteht, warum geht es uns dann so schlecht? Wo sind all die Wunder, von denen unsere Eltern uns erzählt haben? Sie sagen, der HERR habe uns aus Ägypten befreit. Aber was ist jetzt? Er hat uns verlassen und den Midianitern ausgeliefert!«
Then the LORD turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!”
Der HERR sah Gideon an und sagte: »Ich gebe dir einen Auftrag: Geh und rette Israel aus der Gewalt der Midianiter! Du hast die Kraft dazu!«
“But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!”
»Aber wie soll ich Israel denn retten?«, rief Gideon. »Meine Sippe ist die kleinste in Manasse, und ich bin der Jüngste in unserer Familie.«
The LORD said to him, “I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites as if you were fighting against one man.”
Der HERR versprach: »Ich stehe dir bei! Du wirst die Midianiter schlagen, als hättest du es nur mit einem einzigen Mann zu tun.«
Gideon replied, “If you are truly going to help me, show me a sign to prove that it is really the LORD speaking to me.
Gideon entgegnete: »Wenn du wirklich zu mir stehst, dann erlaube mir eine Bitte: Gib mir doch ein Zeichen, dass du, der jetzt mit mir spricht, wirklich Gott bist.
Don’t go away until I come back and bring my offering to you.”
He answered, “I will stay here until you return.”
He answered, “I will stay here until you return.”
Ich möchte dir eine Gabe holen. Bitte geh nicht weg, bis ich wiederkomme.« Der Herr antwortete: »Ich bleibe, bis du zurück bist.«
Gideon ging ins Haus, nahm gut zehn Kilogramm Mehl und backte ungesäuerte Brote. Danach schlachtete er einen jungen Ziegenbock und bereitete ihn zu; das Fleisch legte er in einen Korb, und die Brühe goss er in einen Topf. Nun brachte er das Essen hinaus zur Eiche und bot es seinem Gast an.
The angel of God said to him, “Place the meat and the unleavened bread on this rock, and pour the broth over it.” And Gideon did as he was told.
Doch der Engel Gottes sagte zu ihm: »Nimm das Fleisch und das Brot und leg es auf den Felsen hier! Die Brühe gieß aus!« Gideon gehorchte.
Then the angel of the LORD touched the meat and bread with the tip of the staff in his hand, and fire flamed up from the rock and consumed all he had brought. And the angel of the LORD disappeared.
Der Engel des HERRN streckte seinen Stab aus und berührte damit das Fleisch und das Brot. Da kam Feuer aus dem Felsen und verzehrte das Essen. Zugleich verschwand der Engel des HERRN.
When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he cried out, “Oh, Sovereign LORD, I’m doomed! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!”
Nun hatte Gideon keinen Zweifel mehr, er rief: »HERR, mein Gott, ich muss sterben! Denn ich habe den Engel des HERRN von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen!«
“It is all right,” the LORD replied. “Do not be afraid. You will not die.”
Da sprach der HERR zu ihm: »Hab keine Angst! Du wirst nicht sterben. Mein Friede ist mit dir.«
And Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and named it Yahweh-Shalom (which means “the LORD is peace”). The altar remains in Ophrah in the land of the clan of Abiezer to this day.
Da baute Gideon an dieser Stelle einen Altar und gab ihm den Namen: »Der HERR ist Friede«. Er steht bis heute bei Ofra, der Stadt der Abiësriter.
That night the LORD said to Gideon, “Take the second bull from your father’s herd, the one that is seven years old. Pull down your father’s altar to Baal, and cut down the Asherah pole standing beside it.
In der folgenden Nacht sprach der HERR zu Gideon: »Nimm den siebenjährigen Stier deines Vaters, das zweitbeste Tier aus seiner Herde! Reiß den Altar Baals nieder, der deinem Vater gehört, und hau den Pfahl der Göttin Aschera um, der dort steht!
Then build an altar to the LORD your God here on this hilltop sanctuary, laying the stones carefully. Sacrifice the bull as a burnt offering on the altar, using as fuel the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down.”
Dann bau für mich, den HERRN, deinen Gott, einen Altar an der höchsten Stelle eurer Bergfestung. Schichte das Holz des Pfahles darauf und bring den Stier als Brandopfer dar!«
So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had commanded. But he did it at night because he was afraid of the other members of his father’s household and the people of the town.
Gideon nahm zehn seiner Knechte mit und führte aus, was der HERR ihm befohlen hatte. Er tat es jedoch nicht am Tag, sondern in der Nacht, weil er Angst vor der Familie seines Vaters und vor den Männern der Stadt hatte.
Early the next morning, as the people of the town began to stir, someone discovered that the altar of Baal had been broken down and that the Asherah pole beside it had been cut down. In their place a new altar had been built, and on it were the remains of the bull that had been sacrificed.
Am frühen Morgen entdeckten die Bewohner der Stadt, dass der Altar Baals niedergerissen und der Pfahl der Aschera umgehauen war. Sie sahen auch den neuen Altar, auf dem Gideon den Stier geopfert hatte.
The people said to each other, “Who did this?” And after asking around and making a careful search, they learned that it was Gideon, the son of Joash.
»Wer hat das getan?«, fragten sie einander. Man forschte nach und fand schließlich heraus: »Gideon, der Sohn von Joasch, war es!«
“Bring out your son,” the men of the town demanded of Joash. “He must die for destroying the altar of Baal and for cutting down the Asherah pole.”
Da forderten die Männer der Stadt von Joasch: »Liefere uns deinen Sohn aus! Er muss sterben, weil er den Altar Baals niedergerissen und den geweihten Pfahl umgehauen hat.«
But Joash shouted to the mob that confronted him, “Why are you defending Baal? Will you argue his case? Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning! If Baal truly is a god, let him defend himself and destroy the one who broke down his altar!”
Joasch antwortete den Versammelten: »Wollt ihr etwa Baal verteidigen? Wollt ihr ihn retten? Wer für Baal kämpft, wird noch in dieser Nacht getötet! Wenn Baal wirklich ein Gott ist, dann soll er sich doch selbst dafür rächen, dass sein Altar zerstört worden ist.«
From then on Gideon was called Jerub-baal, which means “Let Baal defend himself,” because he broke down Baal’s altar.
Weil Gideon den Altar Baals niedergerissen hatte, nannte man ihn von da an Jerubbaal (»Baal soll sich an ihm rächen«).
Gideon Asks for a Sign
Soon afterward the armies of Midian, Amalek, and the people of the east formed an alliance against Israel and crossed the Jordan, camping in the valley of Jezreel.
Alle Midianiter, Amalekiter und die Völker aus dem Osten versammelten sich, überquerten den Jordan und schlugen ihr Lager in der Jesreel-Ebene auf.
Then the Spirit of the LORD clothed Gideon with power. He blew a ram’s horn as a call to arms, and the men of the clan of Abiezer came to him.
Da wurde Gideon vom Geist des HERRN ergriffen. Er blies das Horn und rief die Männer der Sippe Abiëser auf, ihm zu folgen.
He also sent messengers throughout Manasseh, Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, summoning their warriors, and all of them responded.
Er sandte auch Boten zum ganzen Stamm Manasse und zu den Stämmen Asser, Sebulon und Naftali. Sie folgten dem Aufruf und schlossen sich Gideons Truppe an.
Then Gideon said to God, “If you are truly going to use me to rescue Israel as you promised,
Gideon betete: »Bitte gib mir ein Zeichen, dass du Israel wirklich durch mich befreien willst, wie du es angekündigt hast.
prove it to me in this way. I will put a wool fleece on the threshing floor tonight. If the fleece is wet with dew in the morning but the ground is dry, then I will know that you are going to help me rescue Israel as you promised.”
Ich lege frisch geschorene Wolle auf den Dreschplatz. Lass doch morgen früh die Wolle vom Tau nass sein, den Boden ringsum aber trocken! Dann weiß ich, dass du Israel durch mich retten möchtest, wie du es gesagt hast.«
And that is just what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the fleece and wrung out a whole bowlful of water.
Was Gideon erbeten hatte, geschah. Als er am nächsten Morgen früh aufgestanden war, presste er den Tau aus der Wolle. Das Wasser füllte eine ganze Schale.
Then Gideon said to God, “Please don’t be angry with me, but let me make one more request. Let me use the fleece for one more test. This time let the fleece remain dry while the ground around it is wet with dew.”
Da sagte Gideon zu Gott: »Sei nicht zornig, wenn ich dich noch einmal um etwas bitte! Ich möchte es nur noch dies eine Mal mit der Wolle versuchen. Lass sie trocken bleiben und den ganzen Boden nass vom Tau sein.«
