Da vernahm er eine Stimme, die ihm zurief: Was willst du hier, Elija? Er antwortete: Mit Leidenschaft bin ich für den HERRN, den Gott der Heerscharen, eingetreten, weil die Israeliten deinen Bund verlassen, deine Altäre zerstört und deine Propheten mit dem Schwert getötet haben. Ich allein bin übrig geblieben und nun trachten sie auch mir nach dem Leben.

Er sprach: Ich habe um den HERRN, den Gott Zebaoth, geeifert; denn die Kinder Israel haben deinen Bund verlassen, deine Altäre zerbrochen, deine Propheten mit dem Schwert erwürgt, und ich bin allein übriggeblieben, und sie stehen darnach, daß sie mir das Leben nehmen.

Wieder antwortete Elia: »Ach, HERR, du allmächtiger Gott, mit welchem Eifer habe ich versucht, die Israeliten zu dir zurückzubringen! Denn sie haben den Bund mit dir gebrochen, deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten ermordet. Nur ich bin übrig geblieben, ich allein. Und nun trachten sie auch mir nach dem Leben!«
